there aren't a lot of players around in England with a FC average over 40 right now.

A lazy look at the stats and there are 14 and 28 in Division 2.
These numbers do not take into account overseas players or those who have retired from international cricket. The actual number available for England to pick will naturally be a lot lower.

The 3 spot is easily the biggest problem - the only potential county candidate that bats there normally is Ballance. So if Root moves it means batting someone out of position. Old school test option and pick three openers? Or take a leaf out of the odi side's book and just shove Sam Billings in there!

I should have been clearer that i meant a career average over 40 rather than in an individual season

Got to love the consistency in this ashes, England at least 100 light with the bat and Warner out cheaply!

As we haven't got an obvious 3 I'd be asking Denly to do it as a stop gap or trying Balance again, then Root can move to 4. After that we've got lots of options of Pope, Stokes, Bairstow, Butler etc. Not sure we've got that many openers to ask to bat 3!

yes me too, a bit of experience for the next 12 months maybe is what we need if a new opener(sibley) comes in for the tours

I think much as some of us, well me, think Root should bat 3 im now of the opinion he should bat where he is comfortable, and that's 4 and batting him 3 has not really worked.

hes going to continue as Captain so he needs as much space to think as he can get.....

(I actually think he should skip new Zealand and have a rest)

ECB need to open a research department for the next series on how to try and get Smith out; only way they're gonna get close to competing

I'd probably lean towards Ballance myself, at least we know he has the capacity to score big runs if he can get in. Beyond that it would just be choosing who to throw under the bus! Think a big problem in this series has been our celebrated lower-middle order has been rubbish! Apart from Stokes, noone else has played a really significant innings. Can't see how we can keep Buttler and Bairstow in the same side, opposite problems in that Buttler is performing ok and improving but has struggled to play the big innings (not entirely his fault tbf), whereas Bairstow at least has proved he can get the tons but is going backwards faster by the series. Got to find space for Pope somewhere imo, it's been a long time since England had someone in the number 6 'promising apprentice' type spot (Bell?). Sort the top 3 out, hopefully get the best from Root at 4, get Pope in then the rest of the order gets easier, it's just about choosing a keeper.

More on the topic of this match, it's depressing how predictable it's getting by this point! England struggle to an average score, openers go early, Labuschange and Smith bat comfortably, Archer gets overbowled and Woakes hardly bowls.
