Best sander for refurbishing bats
« on: November 02, 2019, 07:44:51 PM »

Hey everyone, I know most of you will have lots of experience with this but seem to have "collected" a few bats that need a bit of work over the winter.
What Electric sanders do people recommend and also the paper for them please, the mouse type ones or something else?
I'm guessing for a full sand to start at say 120 to get the marks out and also remove sticker fading if required and work up through 240, 320 and maybe then finish with something higher?

Out of interest there seems to be a few comments on finishing by hand with a fine grade/finishing paper - why is this please (guess i need a different type of paper for this?)

Stupid question.... but wax before applying scuff sheet or after - and does anyone "polish" them or is fine sandpaper enough?

Just to clarify we are talking 5 bats this year and maybe then a couple or so every year so keep it sort of reasonable please  :)

Get a random orbital sander from B&Q or screwfix etc for 50-60. Work through the grades and finish with 400-600 grit 👍

Should we be sanding with the grains though?  If so, that rules out dual action/random orbital.

Thanks Tom - wasn't sure if round or mouse type thing was best especially for the back (i'm guessing not rectangular but could be wrong!)?  I've got some 400/600 aluminium oxide paper but realise it is naff and breaks in seconds so going to find some better stuff i think.  Toolstation and screwfix are closest to me and open tomorrow so will go hunt!

I’ve found circular the best option having purchased mouse/rectangular over the years. I only do a few refurbs here and there as Bats obv isn’t my main stay of business and the JCB random orbital one I’ve got now was recommended to me by another bat maker. Once sanded the proper batmakers have buffing wheels etc to obtain a gloss finish but for getting back to white wood and a smooth finish for the odd refurb then these work fine.

Dewalt random orbital if your on a budget,,,don’t spend less because it won’t last,(trust me ive got a shed full of em)
The dewalt has a decent low orbit, so you get a good finish
If you can afford it, the best without question are the Mirka deros and festool
But only if your serious

Biggest difference in a decent finish, is dust extraction
Get a vac on the sander, the idea is not to grind the dust into the wood
Festool are unreal at this,,,,

Hand sanding? If you can be bothered I suppose,,, you’ll end up with sore fingers etc and nowhere near the finish a random orbital will get.

Paper grades,,,again depends on the sander and extraction used
Use a festool rotex with 120 grit, and the finish will be unreal
Using a cheap sander you might have to go a lot higher and take a hell of a lot longer to achieve the same finish.

And on refurbs, personally I don’t go past 240,,,most bats have stud dings etc from being thrown in bags , so pointless going mad on a polished finish

GULP......  I can see why that is sooooooo good but also now understand more on the need for dust extraction like you say!  Looks like i might have to go De walt then and not waste my money as highlighted - just need to consider it an inestment - although i am tempted by one of the others but as teh at would cost more than my bats I think i may have to hang back!

All depends what you want tbh,,,the  festool and mirka are a joy to use, both will do the job in a fraction of the time, with a vastly superior finish,,they also have anti vibration etc built in, so no numb hands,,,dust extraction that works, so no breathing the stuff in,,covering your work area,,or more importantly grinding it into the bat,,this is a huge part of achieving a decent finish.

You have to look at the sander orbit,,this is important for the finish,,,lower is better, but won’t remove material as quick,,hence why festool have the rotex.

Honestly I wouldn’t waste my time using anything cheaper than the dewalt,,,it’s not worth the hassle,,
It has a low orbit, built in anti numb hands and a half decent bag for the dust if you don’t want to use a vac

Just to add to my earlier point about only using 240 on refurbs,,,,that’s on bats I’ve made
I charge a little more for other makes based on how poorly I find the original finish, and the extra work needed to sand out marks etc
