Bairstow 'rested'. RESTED. Rest of it more or less seems fair for a two test series, if maybe one more seamer than needed.

Yeah i just read that! i do wonder if that statement is more designed to keep johnny happy as we all know he reacts badly to being dropped, we all knew it should happen and foakes should be back,

We gave johnny a test contract so resting him keeps the narrative going rather than the reality is that hes been dropped as lets not forget he was dropped for new Zealand

yes, England have 'indicated' he must come back as a batsman, which means a top 6 position and not keeper.

its a slightly confused picture I think but is there more clarity now for him 'to get back as a batsman only'

alternatively Foakes for 1 tour and he is back competing with Butler as a batsman keeper

It will be interesting to see if Jennings has learnt how to bat with a front leg that isn’t dead straight, assuming he gets a chance.

foakes - good. He's the best keeper in the most challenging conditions and deserves another run at proving himself with the bat

looks like root is going to be the 3rd spinner

Joe, if you're reading this  - Don't bowl Wood in to the ground.

Hopefully Leach takes a suitcase full of baked beans and bottled water with him, and doesn’t try any of the local delicacies.

I can get on board with that. When I make a pot with loose leaves it has to brew for exactly 5 mins. Teabags... a few stirs and it’s good to go.

Why would you take your own teabags to Sri Lanka? Tea heaven.

Can't wait to go, three weeks of beaches, curry, cheap beer and cricket. Colombo moved to the SSC as well, lovely.

Jos Buttler can take confidence from T20 knock to Sri Lanka, says Chris Silverwood

England head coach Chris Silverwood hopes Jos Buttler's return to form in the Twenty20 series finale against South Africa carries over into next month's two Tests in Sri Lanka.

Buttler hit 57 off 29 balls in the five-wicket win in Centurion as England secured a 2-1 series victory.

The wicketkeeper had a top score of only 43 in five Tests over the winter.

"Hopefully he'll take a lot of confidence from it and bring that with him to Sri Lanka," said Silverwood.

"Runs breed confidence within a batsman - to see him come off with a smile on his face in the way he did was superb."

Buttler's place had looked under threat for March's tour of Sri Lanka, which includes Tests in Galle and Colombo.

The 29-year-old struggled in four Tests against South Africa - returning scores of 12, 22, 29, 23, 1, 20 and 8 - and averages 22.05 in Tests since the start of last year's Ashes.

Silverwood said dropping Buttler from the Test squad was "not in my mind", but England have also recalled wicketkeeper Ben Foakes, who was player of the series in the 3-0 whitewash win when England last toured Sri Lanka in 2018.

Buttler was rested for the drawn one-day series in South Africa, before returning to open in the T20s, scoring 15 and two before his half-century.

Silverwood reiterated England captain Eoin Morgan's backing of Buttler continuing as an opener in T20, rather than in a middle-order role.

"He's a very, very destructive player so we want him to face as many balls as he can," he said.

"Hopefully, this score will give him the confidence just to keep moving forward."

Silverwood said England are close to putting together their squad for the T20 World Cup, which takes place in Australia in October and November.

Fast bowler Jofra Archer missed the South Africa T20 series because of an elbow injury, while Somerset opener Tom Banton was left out after featuring in the 3-2 victory in New Zealand in October.

"We played what we believe is our strongest side in these three T20 games," said Silverwood.

"The more they've played together, the better they've got - we've seen the improvement throughout the series so I don't think we're a million miles away.

"There's Banton, Archer to come back and then we'll keep an eye on who's doing well out there as well.

"But we'll obviously refocus now on the Test series against Sri Lanka and look to pick up where we left off here."

Can we assume this means Foakes will be carrying the drinks?
Or will Buttler retain his place as a specialist batsman?

I'm hoping it's the latter as Foakes has to play (and should be the Test keeper going forward) but I have a horrible feeling that won't happen.

Wouldn't mind Buttler as a specialist bat given his ability against spin but Foakes not keeping would be a joke.

After this I really can't see anything else than Foakes carrying the drinks for the series - unless injury occurs of course. I don't think Buttler can play as a specialist bat with the form he's in.

So it will be the same top 7 that finished SA, with 8-11 to be decided dependent on the pitch and fitness, eg. 2 or 3 spinners, is Leach fit etc...

I can see something like...

Sibley
Crawley
Denly
Root
Stokes
Pope
Buttler
Woakes or Curran
Bess
Leach
Broad (or Parkinson if it's a bunsen)

I went to the last tour, had an amazing time, beautiful country.

If you have time to have a meal at Sangakarras restaurant in Colombo it is well worth it
