Professional cricket delayed till at least 1st July
« on: April 24, 2020, 09:13:40 AM »

Just announced - no cricket till at least 1st July.

I think that pretty much rules out any league cricket at amateur level for this summer.

Very depressing.

Would have been the Half way point For us in the WEPL, let’s hope we get some played. Was really looking forward to Eng v Oz at the county ground as well on July 16th 😢

The announcement seems to be in relation to the professional game only at this point.  I think it would be a reasonable assumption though that the recreational game, although probably lower risk (lower spectators, limited support staff, less people needed to get the game on) won't be significantly different at this stage

What do we predict will happen once Pro games have started? Will amateur friendlies then be allowed straight away? Or will we have to wait months extra?

Our league did this at a very early stage, cancelled everything up until the 1st of July with the hope we might get the second half of the season in.

Our league did the same. They have basically said there are 3 options on the table depending on when/if we come back -
1. Back by/on July 4th - start of reverse fixtures so everyone would just play each other once and then only 1 club (rather than 2) would go down and up from each division.
2. Back in early August - Cup competition only that is seeded based on league 2019 standings.
3. Back later than this - would be friendlies only down to clubs to organise. League to restart in 2021.

Yes I think a lot of boards will have this as the template, option 1,half a season and one up one down.
The social distancing rules may have to give a little thou, I don't think most of us believe it's possible for players and umpires to practically stay within the current guidelines so if they don't change can cricket really be played? Looks unlikely.

I don't know about anyone else, the forum spreads Countrywide but I see more and more people out and not just doing exercise or going to work/supermarket.

There's a limit to how long the lockdown can be effective for and people follow the rules.

Gut feeling based on nothing at all scientific is a partial relaxation of the rules in May-pubs,clubs,restaurants is far more problematic thou.

Health comes first but there is monumental damage being done to the economy, the govt is in a very difficult position making these judgement calls.

Well, the latest medical research I read suggested transmission was much lower outside than inside - apparently confined spaces and public transport cause the majority of transmissions - and the statement on Monday by Sturgeon that rules on outdoor activities would be relaxed first suggests that the gov. are aware of this.

The difference of course between a professional cricket game with at least 500 people present even if played behind closed doors, and a recreation cricket match with 22 blokes and a dog is clear for anyone to see.

We polled players and opposition skippers and they all think its possible to have a game whilst sticking strictly to social distancing guidelines, have you tried your players?

Wouldn't be shocked to see cricket training allowed before games are.

ECB is suppose to provide guidance on recreational today in regards to cricket nets/training.

My understanding is 1-1 nets is ok? Have any of your clubs provided guidance, or are they waiting for ECB?

Our nets are owned by the council.
We were told not to put them up when the lockdown started, and are waiting for them to make a decision (apparently tomorrow).

Whatever the ECB say today will no doubt impact if they're allowed to go up or not.

I suppose it all depends on where the nets are and as to who runs them.

In my town there is a club where nets are accessible without anyone being there, so there wouldn’t be any stopping people going there to use them. But then there’s another club that would need someone there to open the nets up. If they can’t find anyone willing to open them up and supervise then even if the ECB/Government are happy for them to be open and used with restrictions club members might not actually be able to use them.

Luckily the club I was due to join this year has a club secretary with access that I know well and is happy to open them up if I want to use them (once the ECB give suitable guidance of course)
