That�s admirable commitment. I hope the other teams in your division have shown the same desire. We have done nothing (the committees run by the �other� team in the club). And I imagine other teams in our league are in a similar situation. I�m not sure I�ve missed the cricket, more the social side.

There is a feeling that we want to maintain positive momentum from last season. Three teams promoted, two as champions, and the 4s now joining the league rather than just playing ad hoc friendlies.

I am the chairman at my club and we have taken the view that we can't safely manage the opening of the nets given the current restrictions. As a club run by volunteers, we just don't have the capacity to operate outdoor nets safely.

In terms of the ground, it is being maintained as it would be normaly for this time of year - save for the preparation of pitches for individual games - so we are ready to go but I don't expect to see any games this summer. I think that the best we can hope for is less restrictive practice.

This is what I see happening...even if a league can start so many will either miss through vulnerable (over weight, diabetes have all presented. A higher risk).. then people with families and kids or pregnant other halves.. who wants to risk their family just for a game of cricket. Can�t really run a credible league with such things.

Few ad hoc friendlies is the only viable option for those who want to risk it.

Save the hard netting for the winter and just write 2020 off

Well....something some of us, although mentioned on this thread, didn't really see coming appears to be happening.

Which is even if net practice, if you can arrange it, leads to games in July for example, players diving in to play may be the problem.

Personally I would be happy to play without worrying too much about catching anything, maybe I'm biased, I missed the whole of 2019 and was told I cannot play cricket again(since changed with conditions) but I'm hearing 10 out of 11 players I know in one team are not happy playing at all this summer. If correct that would put the club in a difficult position as they would be essentially one whole team short and therefore forfeit matches in one of the lower teams in that club.

I don't blame anyone at all for not wanting to risk playing, it could also be people have taken on additional work or worried about paying out costs for cricket when there is precarious job security, or a combination of a few reasons.

10 out of 11 is a lot and it could be that becomes just as much of a problem for clubs going forward.

There's no easy answer to fixing that either.

We are pretty much exactly in the same position as yourselves. It's the most sensible and logical thing to do currently

Some bigger clubs around here have already put safe netting arrangements in place (not ours as yet).

Are people covered by insurance etc if they aren�t members ? (Aka, paid this years subs)
If clubs are opening their facilities are they going to provide toilets / first aid etc etc .. if so, how is that managed safely (who is going to clean said facilities as they don�t know if each person uses it so surely it has to be sanitised?)

Who is going to clean the net facility as I�m assuming given they don�t really know how long Covid lasts outside if someone touches the net/posts etc.. it�ll need regular cleaning

Club machine .. who gets to use it ? How is it safely used and cleaned between uses?

Club stumps... again, safe use .. are they cleaned between use .. who ensures this or are we relying on people doing it themselves ? (What happens If the idiot before me doesn�t clean up and then I catch it and are hospitalised and it costs me money., can I sue the club for loss of earnings? (I wouldn�t but we live in a blame no win no fee culture so this sadly has to be considered)

How do you stop randoms rocking up ?

So many things sadly, it�s just not a case of rocking up for a few hits . Clubs I fear will rush into opening and leaf the,selves wide open should it go wrong .. all for a bit or a hit when there is no serious prospect of any league stuff happening (even if it does in name, so many from clubs won�t play it�ll be meaningless)

Just doesn�t seem worth the risk as sad as that is to say

These are all things clubs should consider, as per the ECB guidelines.

Which is why it's going to be a completely club by club decision. And I wouldn't begrudge any club for not opening up their nets.

I do believe there are clubs that can make it work, clubs that have groundsman that can be there watching over things for example and clubs which are able to keep their nets private from the randoms showing up etc....

The other thing is nets need to be able to be put up with only 2 people whilst social distancing, which can't be easy!

I believe my club are drawing up some protocols for use this weekend. So we will see what the committee come up with.

In more news the ICC are set to ban the use of saliva on the ball but you are allowed to use sweat apparently there's a big difference in the chances of transmission of COVID-19 between saliva and sweat.

Also they are suggesting 2 home umpires.

Genuinely, do you ever have anything positive to say?

Your comments seem to be nothing but negativity towards any form of cricket.

Also, many bowlers advocate sweat getting more swing that saliva.

a balanced game on a sporting wicket is awesome fun (when there isn't any verbals).. great game.. a flat deck with a ball that barely moves is pretty dire both to play in and watch
