Porter's omission is crazy.

I can understand Plunkett not being there, if he was dropped before and isn't part of Morgan's plans then he isn't going to pick him again.

Northeast not in there is an interesting one, I think that's his ship sailed now.

Happy that James Bracey is there and gets recognised for his Lions efforts.

It is noticeable that the batsman are all (apart from a couple) pretty young white ball specialists.

Yer I’ve got no issues with Plunkett’s omission. He wouldn’t be in the side anymore in a normal situation so it would be a waste of a spot picking him over a young lad that has plenty to offer in the future.

Looks like the end of Alex Hales England career as well

Can you imagine if he had stopped taking the drugs after the first positive test. Would have been a different career altogether!

I think with Plunkett it's just that he's not going to be considered for the next ODI world cup cycle (think he'll be 38/39), so why include him now..

With the batsmen I suspect that suggests that Stokes/Buttler/Root are going to be included in the test team and they need white ball reinforcements. Bracey, Lawrence and Vince have decent first class records though if they wanted to shuffle it about a bit. Livingstone despite his reputation averages nearly 42 in first class cricket over a decent period.

Perhaps it's just my club then, but as far as I know it's the other way round for us.

Yeah, us too. The junior section is heavily subsidized by the rest of the club, even before you start accounting for volunteer-hours.

Couldn't disagree more here. A reduction in lockdown is representative of the sacrifices people made to get the country into a position where this would be possible. A reduction in lockdown is possible because the numbers are continually falling and the tests that clarify the position of the country against the virus have indicated that the government can ease restrictions.

I do agree that the PL coming back is all about money. However we need an economy to come back to at the end of all of this. We will be facing the worst economic downturn for 100 years based on current predictions. So anything we can do to mitigate this, safely, in my book is worth doing.

Round here the current estimate is that barely 100 people in the entire county are infected and this halves every 8 days. Probability that any of these turn up at a cricket match is minute, given that most will be self-isolating with symptoms. The probability that they transmit it to anyone there are even slimmer, given that the probability of outdoor transmission is basically zero anyway.

We're talking something incredibly, incredibly safe. We've lockdowned hard, and reached the point where you're 10 times more likely to get run over on the way to the pitch than catch COVID playing cricket.

Never mind July, cricket is safe to play NOW.

Is this the US or UK?

Hard to see how anyone can estimate the number of cases when a high proportion are asymptomatic, but obviously it varies all over the world so I have no knowledge of your local situation.

As far as the UK goes, as much as I want the season to start tomorrow, whilst there are still hundreds of deaths a day I can't see how anyone can justify starting cricket fixtures.

Don't forget when we "locked down" (so to speak, because we didn't really do it properly) there was only a quarter of the number of deaths daily we're seeing currently, if anything we're coming out to quickly as it is (although I understand the economic reasoning).

I have to admit I would love to be playing now, I am not sure many on here are qualified to say if it safe to do so, however.

I am off for another net this afternoon which is at least something!

Yep sums it up in one sentence really.

Going for my 2nd net of the summer later with my new GM again so thats at least something. Also netting really seriously, working on real game situations, facing a new ball today from our opening bowler. Note to self actually leave the new bat at home and take the old one

Hypothetically, if ECB was to take a democratic approach to the recreational games, ask the leagues to get the clubs to vote Yes or No to playing and proceed accordingly based on the votes; how many clubs would vote yes?

Perhaps it's just my club then, but as far as I know it's the other way round for us.

The basic economics for us it that we have at least 4 times as many juniors as seniors, the junior coaches are volunteers and there are very marginal costs to putting on junior fixtures.  For every senior game, once we have paid umpires, scorers, math has and teas, they run at a loss.

If we had no juniors, we would have to rapidly change the way out club  runs

The UK.

Maybe you haven't been following the analysis very closely. Deaths lag infections by up to 3 weeks, so hundreds of people dying yesterday reflects the infection rate at the start of the month, not now.

Surely you're aware that since lockdown, the number of infected has fallen by over 95%? Only 0.35% of the country are estimated to be currently infected, in some regions (like ours) that number is down to 0.1% and halving every 8 days. The probability of another player having Coronavirus is 1 in 100. The probability of it transmitting to anyone during a game of cricket is described as "very remote" by leading experts.

Multiple "very remote" by "1 in 100", and you have a very, very, very safe activity.

And here we have a perfect example of the attitude which resulted in people flocking to the beach and not even attempting to socially distance themselves from others...

@SLA - any links to these probabilities? Not entirely sure I've seen any reports of the probability of opposing cricketers having COVID being 1 in 100 but I could be mistaken.

Anyway if that's a correct figure then that would mean out of the 41 matches played in the Wilts league each Saturday, approximately 9.02 players would be running around with COVID. Do you not see the issue with this...

Before this thread falls into disrepair like most lately, I believe what @Buzz has said sums it up perfectly. I too am off for a net shortly and will no doubt thoroughly enjoy it.

Let's all just be grateful we have our health unlike many others.

I started social distancing in early March when infections were at half a million and climbing and the probability of getting infected was significant. I started turning down meeting invites in London from the start of the month, started working from home and took my kid out of nursery from the 10th, and started wearing mask and gloves to the supermarket by the 15th... but I bet you did none of these things.

I find it hilarious how people are suddenly taking it more seriously now there are 130,000 currently infected than they did where there were 2.8m infected.
