When I first started using senior bats in the late 90s, bats generally had much lower middles than they do now. This is my first SH bat. It has a very low middle and a very thick toe compared to what you see on most modern bats.

I don't think that playing conditions have changed such that there has been a need to vastly alter the profile of bats. For me, it came with a trend to using lighter bats and towards bats with bigger edges. The compromise for this was first higher middles and concaving and then more recently duck bill toes.

Personally, I prefer a lower middle. No doubt you will hit balls higher up the bat when you are defending and pulling and cutting where you are deflecting the pace on the ball. But you need the most power when you are planting the ball back over the bowlers head when you are hitting the ball low down the bat and for that I prefer to see the biggest part of the middle to be in that area.

Luckily as someone who uses heavy bats, I can opt for a lower middle, with big edges and without concaving but otherwise you have to make compromises.

Which bat is this one? 😀
Other thing I noticed on those oldies, that they're very balanced, wood looks equally divided, while a bit more lower down, this might be the reason they didn't feel bottom heavy.

Ppl say this but I have honestly never seen someone hit really big sixes with a 2-7/2-8 bat. Those are usually hit with 2-12 and above bats.

Really? Even the pro's who hit it miles? Or people of an older generation who still managed to hit it out of the ground?

Our keeper uses a 2lbs 7oz bat and he hits it as many sixes and of a decent size, as anyone else I've seen when he gets it right.

It is a Duncan Fearnley Gold. Back then, a Grade 3 got you more grains than you could count and no blemishes - �72 with a 10% discount my club had with the retailer!

A lot of pros use this sort of weight in the modern game but they generate power by incredible hand speed and use the speed of the ball coming on to the bat.

If you don't have that hand speed then a bigger bat will give you more power. Having played a lot of league cricket, I am reasonably confident that most players don't have the hand speed to hit a yorker over extra cover like Jos Butler can

I would suggest Jos Buttler's bat speed being measured at over 100mph has far more to do with how big his sixes are than 3-4oz on his bat weight.

Very true SD, but it seems they always refer to pros or international players to make their point account, while we're talking about as low as we play 😀
Many of us don't get the time to settle down nicely 🙂 when having to hit the ball from the word go, I'm sure most lighter bats will struggle hit 6, when ball is turning a bit as well.

His bats are very light from what I understand, so it is entirely his hand speed

the notion that light bats cant hit sixes is utter utter tripe.

most batsman I know use 2.8-2.10, every single one of them can hit big sixes. I use a 2.8 bat, and topped the sixes chart last year in our 1s.

people are reading into bat weights and shapes way way too much yet again haha.

dont overthink it, buy something you like the look of, and you feel good using, then worry about your technique rather than the bat youre holding.

Being a little older now I love seeing older style bats come into the workshop, so a great profile this and should do well I think with some people. One question tho, can I have it at 2lbs 7oz with 40mm edges and 67mm spine? Thanks! 😂

Depends on the bowling you're facing, you wouldn't be able to hit many 6s in our league, I'm sure
