XI for first Test?
« on: July 03, 2020, 09:36:09 PM »

Assuming everyone's fit, what would your XI be for the first test?

This is the XI that will be picked -

Burns
Sibley
Crawley
Denly
Stokes
Pope
Butler
Ali
Archer
Broad
Anderson

This is the XI that should be picked:

Burns
Sibley
Crawley
Lawrence
Pope
Stokes
Foakes
Bess
Wood
Archer
Anderson

I would maybe have Woakes in for one of Archer or Wood but otherwise your suggested XI looks spot on to me. Lawrence looks a great prospect, Crawley should be given a chance to stake a claim at 3, Foakes deserves a run in the side.

Sneaking suspicion Lawrence could be an excellent long term option at 3 with Crawley to go away and become the next opener. Just think he may be a more natural 3 than Crawley.

For me the 11 will be as you have suggested.

What I'd like to see is:

Burns
Sibley
Crawley
Lawrence
Stokes
Pope
Foakes
Bess
Broad
Archer
Anderson

My reasoning is broad is still one of the greatest seam bowlers England have ever had, him and Anderson on their day are capable of bowling teams out in a session. Archer provides the enforcement option, and a genuinely exciting prospect that makes bowling express pace look easy, for me then it's a toss up between bess and wood.

Wood misses out in this case because I think a spin option is invaluable and stokes provides some overs to account for the absence of a 4th genuine seamer

Think if Wood is fit he'll retain his place but either way the bowlers will be rotated.

Squad announced. Bess the only spinner and no Lawrence in the squad.

Also, Bairstow and Mo don't make the reserve player list!

Not sold on Burns.

Really why?

His technique by any chance?

Got 2 hundreds in not that many tests, scored 1000 div 1 runs for 5 years running all opening

He's the best opener in the country (Sibley a close second)

I'm sure Burns had to wait longer because he is unorthodox, him and Sibley are strong willed individuals whose technique works for them.

Def have to persist with these guys and prob Crawley as well, who could slot into Denlys spot after this match.

Really glad to see we are taking the right path with the test side. Bess a decent young spinner definitely more worthy than Ali - whom was pathetic last time we toured India. Bairstow has been given far too many opportunities in the test side and it’s only right he’s licker into touch now.

I personally feel Crawley, Sibley and Lawrence will do better and should be given chances. Once Root is back, push Crawley and Sibley to open and then Burns doesn’t have a place. That was my thinking.

Burns has got a good few years left at his best. Give Crawley more time to develop, he's still very much picked on potential not ability. Would like to see Lawrence introduced to the side and Pope moved up to 5 which seems a natural fit for him at the moment.

Denly is one who misses out for me once Root returns.

Not sold on Burns.

Me neither.  I haven't seen him make a score without being dropped at least once and it is the same two faults - driving outside off without committing his weight into the shot or playing across the line to leg - that cause him trouble.

He deserves a run in the side but an average of 33 whilst the luck has been with you isn't something the write home about.  He is far from showing that he has established himself at this level in my view
