So, 2 catches dropped in 2 successive matches!
First one was very hard driven caught and bowled chance, which injured my left hand third finger. And then yesterday I was too much worried about the finger and spilt sky high catch at cover. I got underneath it, the ball hit some part of my hands, then chest and the ground! 🙂
I'm happy that I didn't try to be the hero...

38 this week (stupid shot) to follow up 58 last week, feeling very comfortable with the bat but as a team we're just woefully underperforming, especially with the ball. Oh the joys of being a skipper!

Still not playing but looks like ok to return this coming weekend when no doubt the recent weeks availability issues will be resolved and wont get selected as not been available since start of season! :(

On the positive side I have been able to sit in the sun (last two weeks) and watch my eldest who's 14 open the bowling for the 2s and has been doing well.

5th league game of the season and genuinely one of the most unpleasant experiences ive been through on a cricket pitch in years.

Worth adding we are a 2nd 11 in the lower divs of the surrey championship for context.

We have been struggling with appaling availability all season and its no shock we are bottom of the league when half the team would just about get into the 3's normally. Away at top of the league - relegated from div above last proper season - who are unbeaten and battering everyone. Tried to stay postive when i arrived an hour before the game to see a 2's team with an average age of about 25 warming up and doing batting/fielding drills, so won the toss and batted hoping to stay in the game as long as possible. didnt fancy chasing leather for 50 overs then get skittled in 15.

Before the game started, the home skipper (who had only acknowledged us to toss the coin) demanded that we use their laptop/ipad to score and control the live stream, we declined as we use a scorebook and dont have a scorer the book just gets passed around during the innings, We also didnt want to be responsible for the equipment should something get damaged or go missing. Our refusal was met with aggression and after a couple of minutes of us telling him why we didnt want to, his response was "so your going to do this, every club is doing it" - quick reminder to the level in which we are playing. he was reminded that if he wanted this doing he should have his own scorer and an umpire as well. They were also live streaming the game, but did so without checking we were ok with it or that we had any children in the side.

Ideal start to a game of cricket. The initial chirp from all 11 players quickly turned into abuse after about 3 overs, comments about weight, age, ability, to every batsmen every ball. Every not out decision was met with anger and accusations of cheating. Our ump is a big not outer for both sides every week, but i think their behavior didnt help their case.

In all honesty, they were much better than us so we had no option but to grind with the bat and just survive. it was hard work and i enjoyed the battle with the bat, but scoring was difficult and with the weakest lineup i have had so far this season we couldnt take any risks or we would be skittled - as expected that eventually happened. 78-3 became 98 all out in 49.5 overs. proud of my guys for making them work for it but we just arent good enough to compete with them. Every batsmen was given a send off, even a 14 year old who was last man out. constant digs about us not trying to win the game - not sure what they expected us to do.

All out to try and take a few down with us on the chase, not the best start. without a proper keeper due to our issues the only person with some gloves got the job, and shelled one first ball! only to be told by the batsmen that he was sh!t and was going to regret it. as expected they tee'd off, launching anything loose as far as they could. we took one with us, could at deep cow, again to be told by the outgoing batsmen how sh!t we were and how he'd slapped us everywhere (he only got 20) only took them 13 over to see it off but in all honesty we were glad to get out of there. half of them couldnt be bothered to shake hands, and their skipper quickly disappeared into his team without thanking our ump for doing both ends or offering to buy him a beer out of courtesy.

Some teams need reminding that at our level we are all sh!t, i suspect that they will fall out with quite a few teams this season as our league is very friendly for the most part. hopefully they win the league and our paths dont cross again, we might not be so friendly next time.

Anyway, rant over. onto another week of battling to get a competitive team out

It's bad enough when you are struggling but then to have to endure this only leads to even more people being N/A.

At least you weren't HSBC in the Kent League - not a pleasant day for them

@Real Munson could easily have happened to us if we bowled first.

Some teams just need to recognize how low a level we are actually playing, even in 1st 11 cricket ive not had that kind of verbals.

The ipad thing was hilarious, just his attitude from the minute he spoke to us was shocking. cant wait for the return fixture later in the season when we tell them they cant film and we dont have wifi, even more for when he tries to make our 70 year old scoring lady use his ipad. she's got a decent temper on her so might film that

Mate I'd report that to the league, it's the only way they'll learn - literally hate to see it

thought about reporting it but experience of the surrey champ processes tells me that the minnow clubs like ours would just be ignored. their 1's are fairly high up, and from what i understand quite similar to the 2's in behaviour, so i doubt anything would come of it.

they have to play a timed game against us next and i will definitely be batting for day 2

This type of nonsense made me give up for a number of years. People at an average level giving it the big one. I just wanted a social break from work and you paid to be abused.

Definitely right to bat first.

I hate reading stuff like this. Sadly it is becoming more and more prevalent. The fact it is a league match should not give licence for people to act like complete d*ckheads. It is still amateur cricket, and really doesn’t mean anything in the grand scheme of things.

Really saddens me to read events like this. I quit playing 1st XI cricket just over 10 years ago as was fed up with the "banter" and plus had two kids within 15 months of each other and cricket for me was a release and time for some enjoyment. Being abused by kids half my age was not enjoyment.
Now, when I do play it's in our 2s which I accept is a pretty average standard and therefore adopt a relaxed attitude to it.....you will get poor decisions, dodgy pitches, and misfields and hacks galore but I love it as its a chance to get out and play this amazing game and help develop the younger players.

Sad to read stories like this but all too common.

The level really doesn't matter.  From ECB Prem (and I mean the top leave, not like in WEPL where they have 6 million divs) down to division 9898887... IT'S MEANINGLESS AMATEUR CRICKET.  You don't win anything. It's supposed to be 26 people (22 players, 2 umpires and 2 scorers) having FUN... every Saturday and Sunday.

Sadly, a high proportion seem to feel it's the World Cup final, or the ashes and that their life depends on winning/cheating/abusing others in the name of 'competitiveness'.. Bored of how many times people equate being competitive with 'aggression', cheating or outright unpleasantness.

Sadly, different flavours of unpleasantness but it does seem to be more and more common even though we have all the education/courses/umpires/rules/regs in the world and according t most people.. everyone is just being 'aggressive' or 'competitive'

but did so without checking we were ok with it or that we had any children in the side.

so quite literally.. that's against the rules

THEY MUST.. MUST .. have signs up saying that games are being recorded/live streamed.. ANY U18 (home team) MUST have signed a form and they MUST have asked the opposing captains permission to live stream/record a game (it's not up to the home team to worry about away teams ages though!).

It quite literally asks if you have asked both capts permission before pressing go if you use PCS Pro.. (no idea of crappy Frogbox)

So, the only part of this bit of the story is that it is going to become a regular thing iMO anyway so scoring on a laptop and steaming is something to do and get used to. It's good for the game as scoring on PCS Pro is sooo darn easy (and quicker for a scorer!) and the live stream either just sits there at its basic level or is still, very simple as it's most complicated (assuming you aren't worrying about live replays in game etc)..

laptop scoring should really become mandated IMO within the next year or 3. It's just really good for the game compared to scorebooks.
