If you get out to fairly ordinary bowling, that would suggest it was a fairly ordinary bit of batting. Not exactly difficult to piece that one together...

Not a brilliant weekend for me, out first ball of the innings chasing a biggish score. How do you lose concentration before you've even faced a ball?! Lesson learnt there.
Odd game, despite dropping their top scorer 6 times and losing by 180ish runs we came away feeling like we had more fun than most of the oppo, weird bunch of blokes.

I normally have a process I follow and it works well for the most part. On Saturday the sight screen was in the wrong place and presumably had been for the whole first innings - I spent the bowler's runup debating about whether to get it moved and forgot to go through any of my normal setup! First ball floaty outside off and I just had a waft and put it straight up in the air, hopeless. Serves me right really, I know what works for me so ony myself to blame if I don't do it.

I may be one of very few to post today but we got a game in today. Knowing it was going to rain heavily over night and going on the advise of the 4-5 farmers we gave and there high tech weather tracking we covered wicket with the roll ons and for the first time in ages also used the covers for run up and the side covers for the square. Despite 5 hours of persistent rain it stopped at about 11:30 in Suffolk and with high winds and having been really dry recently a couple of turns of rope over the outfield we started at 1:45pm with a 40 Over aside game.

I for this first time in adult cricket I now find myself being in the middle order, no idea why but new skipper this year and he has decided to open himself with the other regular opener Iv batted with for the last 5 seasons and I�m at 5.
Came in at 165/3 with 6 overs left and 3rd ball play a cut straight to backward point, skipper calls yes yes yes and before I know it he is about 5 yards from me and the ball being thrown to the bowler so I take a gentle jog forward and I�m run out for 1. Skipper was on 80 odd at the time so scarified myself.

Been told that apparently he wants a regular opening partnership which I totally understand and also wants me to bowl the middle overs as my Darren Stevens style bowling is what we need as I generally go at about 2 per over. Anyway after scoring 208/8 in our 40 we take the field.

Oppo start well and are at the runs rate after 14 overs when we have to make a bowling change as our young quick can only bowl 7overs max. So the other opener my old opening partner is told to bowl next over. A couple of overs later and after a couple of quick wickets from the other opening bowler. Skip tells him to take a spell and brings himself on to bowl. Run rate now at about 7 per over. Anyway pick up wickets at regular intervals and with 7 wickets between them and Oppo 9 down with 8 overs left needing 68 to wim, skip and other opener continue to bowl. Oppo now Build a partnership and at the start of 37 over umpire stops other opener form bowling telling him his bowled his allocation. Oppo need 18 to win. Skip looks around and says to vice how do we trust now, vice says a bit puzzled �erm Chris� oh ok fancy a couple. Now must be honest every ounce of me wanted to tell him to stuff it but that wouldn�t do team any favours so I Bowl and do for 3 skip than bowls and hat would be his last and 4th ball No11 chips one in the air and we win by 11 runs I think.

So great to get a win but I feel after 5 years that I�m now not rated as a batsmen (highest avg over the last 5 years) also based on games I play per season top 2 runs per season for last 5 years) 10 centuries in 5 league seasons 21x 50�s and also not rated as a bowler. Iv been the clubs league keeper pretty much but always used as a bowler in T20.

So not sure what to do or how to take things. Each captain is entitled to do as they wish but surely communicated to the player if they are not in his plans isn�t to much to ask. After missing all league cricket last season with Covid it�s such a downer on the game I love and look forward to. Having a family makes it hard but starting to feel that of I�m being asked to give up my time to
Play as opposed to spend with family to be a bits and pieces player isn�t really on. Anyway good win for the team after they lost by 2 runs last week was good to get out on the right side this week.

If he's planning to bat you at 5 it sounds like you're still very much rated as a batsman @SOULMAN1012 , from my point of view I'd always want someone capable of steadying the ship in at 5 given the propensity of club cricket top orders to collapse in a heap.

Bowling wise, I've experienced similar - told I'd be bowling first change under a new midweek skipper and ended up bowling two overs right at the end of their innings. Unsurprisingly my slow-medium pace got absolutely whacked to all parts by the set batsman teeing off.

Maybe worth a word with your skip before next week to ask what he actually wants you to do as a bowler? Make your case that you're happy to do what's needed for the team but that you need some direction about what that role is.

As a new skipper it's very tempting to make changes and try and make the team your own, but it's easy to do some bloody daft things when you do that. Possible that he just needs a quiet word from somebody, sounds like the VC rates your bowling so that might be an option too.

God, i certainly don�t miss that lack of clarity regarding roles in the team. My Saturday skipper has been pretty decent at this over the years. There�s 3 of us who can open because we�re solid defensively but need a bit of time to get going. Then we have accumulators at 4/5 then 6-7-8 are the guys who can give it a whack. Whereas our bowlers generally have certain points they bowl at etc...

Whereas my Sunday team, our skipper would often have the top 7 all padded up and then make an off the cuff decision regarding who went in when. It was an absolute nightmare, not knowing where you stood. He had blokes batting 4/5 places out of position and we were always 50-4. Every week.

I stopped playing on Sunday�s for about a season and a half because of it. Though we have a new skipper now so I�ll definitely be about more.

I can certainly understand how frustrating it is not knowing where you stand in a team.

Seems to be either 50 or bust for me this season as I got another duck.

We batted first in a friendly and were all out for a below par 116. If it weren�t for a 59 from our no.4 it could have been ugly. I got one back of a length that just never got up and scrapped my shin on the way past.

Came on first change as well as we had 2 bowlers and a couple of part timers. Went for a shocking 9 an over bowling spin as their skipper kept smashing me over cow for 6. Dragged it back in my last over as I switched to seam, might just go seam up from here out, can�t be any worse!

They got it in about 20. Still averaging 25 for the season but seems to either be single figures or 50 for me!

3rd match in a row that has been called off without even leaving the house. On the plus side this is now our best unbeaten run for around 10 seasons.

Atleast you didn't have to leave the house.

We had an away game miles away which they didn't call off so we trek the 45 minutes to get there for around half 12 for a supposed 1pm start with it raining the entire way there. We get there and it's drizzling so come 1pm they want to leave it 10 minutes to see if all of the weather forecasts are wrong and that it magically stops drizzling. After an unknown amount of time it is still drizzling although as a trainee groundsman the ground and square in particular are far firmer than I was expecting, it's cold and not very pleasant but it is safe. It is finally agreed that we will reduce down to a T20, we do the toss and the home side elect to bat first. We all get ready in the back of our cars and head out onto the pitch ready to field and get the game on. We're stood out there for 10-15 minutes when their skipper trudges out and tells us that his players don't want to play in this weather, despite it not changing since the toss was done. So we all get back into our cars an hour and a half after we arrived, ready for another 45 minute drive back thanks to an opposition club in disarray who neither wanted to call it off nor wanted to actually play a game of cricket.

They're now claiming the game was rained off rather than them conceding because their captain couldn't control their team and couldn't get them to play a game of cricket.
