Quite a manic season at my club, 5 out of our 6 league teams got promoted (our 5th and 6th are in same Div).

1/2/3/4 teams won the league whilst 5XI missed out by a point after failing to bag the minimum 7 points needed on the last day of the season.

We turned out 7 teams every week and even had an 8th team on 6 occasions. The 1XI are now upto WEPL Prem 2 which is the highest level our club has ever played at after 3 promotions on the bounce and only losing 1 game all season.

As u can imagine it was quite a heavy night celebrating at the club last Saturday!

Personally my cricket has been terrible but glad to have played some part in helping teams win games this season.
Well done mate, although did you have to beat Old Down rather than take them up with you? 😂

One of those days today when nothing went right. Won the toss on what is usually a decent track but a ropey outfield and ground to find a wicket that looked good but played terribly in our innings. Back to opening as skipper is now away playing rugby and the first ball pitched just back of a length shot along the floor totally and just missed the stumps. Managed to then get a few away waiting for the ones really over pitched and trying to keep out anything else. Got to 18 before one from the spinner just went straight on and LBW and we were 52-3 at that point. Middle order went with the throw the bat approach and it paid off for a while with a nice stand of 60 odd from number 6 &7 until they to got undone with a grubber and one that popped from no where. Tailenders biffed a few more and we ended with 142 all out off 36 which we thought wasn’t to bad.

There innings started off terribly for us, the extra pace of our seamers seemed to make the pitch play better and we bowled far to many half volleys and even full tosses which was the biggest crime, just trying to hard i personally feel and they were 60 for 0 off 10. Both sides missing players due to Harvest for us and mainly football for them meant a few wickets and we had an outside chance. This gave me a chance to turn my arm over and after 2 maidens I finally got the opener who is a good bat to play a rash shot to see cover drop a dolly. That just about summed it up for us. I beat the bat about 25 times in my 9 over spell with a mix of decent bowling and the pitch just doing all sorts. In the end we grabbed a couple of wickets from real part time bowling but they got the runs in the 29th over.

Shame as it pretty much ends our slime chance of promotion although we play team in 2nd next week and if we win big we have a tiny chance of pipping them but it’s basically another season of coming so close. Despite winning more games than those above us the avg pts has counted against us as we have not conceded any games but team currently top has conceded 8 but due to covid being the reason for them supposedly no loss of avg pts for them and the team in 2nd have gained more pts from
Losing then we have.

Final nail in the coffin was that I managed to get 3 grabbers in a row from there medium pacer on my toe and cracked my bat, certainly repairable and as it was the first bat I made myself under Willow & Wand and I haven’t toned up yet it will be getting the TLC treatment to try and put that right next week in our final game of the season.

League season ended today with another lost game! Luckily WPCC 3rd XI survived relegation by 1 point!
Bowled 9 overs 17 runs 1 wicket.
Defending 79 runs!
As it happens to be that I bowled like 6/7 overs to that left handed batsman, who luckily I bowled with a delivery that narrowly went through his bat and pad.
While last week when I opened the bowling, was facing batsman who was prominently leg side batsman who tried to dominate the bowling, whom I bowled like 7 of 9 overs and kept him quite except for a couple of shots.

I really don't understand the average points system being applied by a number of leagues.  If you are under strength, it incentives concededing as you are likely to end up with more points than playing the game.

A concession now means O pts but that only happens if your honest and for example state not enough players, if you state covid as the reason for not enough players you don’t get penalised. The avg pts system is crap and no idea why it’s in place when the league knew we would have a full season this year

I think if they don't go back to the normal points system next season there will be alot of very very unhappy people around the league.

I didn't play yesterday as have been quite ill since Thursday so wasn't fit to play. We went to top of the league missing quite a few players, they have been the best side by quite a distance and we duely lost by 123 runs, even though we scored 300!!!! Yes they scored 423-7 off their 50 overs including an 162 off 85 balls by their captain. We scored 300 in reply which was a great effort by the lads and secured enough points for Div 1 cricket next season. Which, with the availability we have had this season and no overseas player and a great achievement.

One game left to hopefully enjoy in a more relaxed atmosphere knowing we are safe.

Frustrating end to the season yesterday after a brilliant week on tour with the Frogs. Took 4fer and scored 33* but ran out of partners with 41 needed off the last three overs, meaning we finished 4th in the league. Given our aim in the 2s was promotion it was frustrating, but personally a very good season all round.

Ended up as Beaconsfield leading wicket taker in league cricket with 32 - 3 in div 1 and 29 in div 4. Four games, against the bottom four sides, were rained off which could have boosted my stats more. First time ever (I think) that I’ve taken over 50 wickets in a season and one game to go for Frogs next week. Also privileged to be named 2s player of the year! I was due to captain the side yesterday as the captain had stepped aside for the game due to high availability, but a drop out meant he was back in.

On tour played 3 games, two for Frogs and one for the North Devon League representative xi, who were short. Overall 7 wickets in the week, a run out and a 21 ball 50 at Valley of the Rocks (Lynton and Lynmouth CC). Plenty of Frogs eying up the @Neon Cricket green edition with envy as balls disappeared at various games.

Best game for me this season was for Frogs vs Devon Dumplings, a very strong touring side full of Devon Premier players, where I took 5/30 and scored 59 in an innings nobody else got over 29 in. If only I could do that every week!

Looking forward to next season already, and the new challenges it will bring.

Final game of the season today and we have missed promotion by 0.5pts despite having the most points and in fact 60 more than the next best and not conceded a single game but that’s not good enough this season.

On the bright side we had a fantastic game of cricket.

Skipper for the day decided to pick the batting line up out the hat, names in one and batting position in another, turned out our normal No8 opened with the normal opening bat, No11 at 3 and no 10 at 4 with myself at 5. Normal opener managed 15 from 61 before getting caught, que bat thrown across changing room lol, No8 was 50odd and 85-1 off 17. Next up was a 100 run partnership that saw our No8 normally score his first ton (great as he uses one of my bats) and No10 normally make 41 and 200-3 with 3 overs left. I managed 21 from 11 with the biggest 6 iv hit in years so pretty happy.

We then bowled those that were No11, 10, 9 etc in that order and despite them getting off to a good start we picked up regular wickets everyone had 5 overs if they wanted it and I managed 5/2/11/2 and they needed 40 off the last 6. Last over 11 needed, last ball, 1 to tie and 2 for them to win and the batter played and missed so we won by 1 run. Oppo today was our local rivals but it’s a very friendly rivalry and they achieved the 3 pts that saw them promoted in 2nd place.

So overall this is this seasons stats:
13 games in total including T20’s & Sunday League - 10 league , 3 x T20
9 innings 348 runs at 43.5 HS 97*
8 catches, (1 stumping as only kept once, my keeping days are done)
53/12/113/14 bowling figures for the season

That puts me on 14367 league runs in my career so one more season next year to try and get to 15k runs and then I think I’ll stop as just not enjoying Sat league cricket this year at all.

Fantastic that there are still teams that play the game this way.  For ages I've been banging on that 'participation > results' in our junior comps, but it seems to fall on deaf ears with a lot of people.  More power to you and your team  :)

Our last game of the season yesterday, it was a dead rubber, but turned into a great game as we won in the last over. I also finished the season well getting 116.

We won the toss after our skipper won a game of Rock, paper, scissors!! We batted and me and my opening partner put on 209 for the 1st wicket, the crazy part of that came when on 35ish I was given out LBW when I hit it on to my pad and I was half way to the pavilion and the oppo skipper called me back!! We finished 294-4 off our 50.

They started well as well and were 88-1 and 148-2 always close to the rate, then we picked up some wickets but there best batter (and one of the best in the league) was still in and we were a long way behind the overs clock. So we ended 2 overs short, so had a 12 run penalty which meant it left them needing 14 off 2 instead off 26 off 2 with 4 wickets in hand. Great 49th over from our opener meant we were defending 9 off the last and we won by 2 runs.

In the end we finished a clear 9th, but considering we only won 1 game in the 1st half of the season, it's been an amazing comeback from the lads to then win 5 in the 2nd half. Add in to be one of the only sides without a Pro in Div 1 and hold our own is a great achievement.

Great game to end the season, played in a brilliant spirit.
By body and hands are very very ready for a break!!!

careful.. you'll be called 'Non Competitive' and not 'Win at all Costs'...

People seem to forget that you can be competitive without being a (No Swearing Please) or giving everyone a decent game

This was only because it was the final game of the year and our normal skipper misses end of the season each year as he is a semi pro Rugby player. Unfortunately it’s become that the skipper and his nearest and dearest will bat top 4 and all bowl every week and the others get a game as and when so I wish this was more how it normally is but afraid not.

Vote out the skipper?
Surely if 4 blokes are doing it all the other 7 must be pretty fed up. Even higher up the leagues the number of tea eating fielders baffles me! If you don’t bowl and bat lower than 7 most weeks… what’s the point.

He is young and a very talented sportsman used to winning and playing high level. Has played county level cricket at age groups and as I said semi pro rugby. Iv spoke to him and shared my frustration as a “senior player” as it where and a few others have said they will but who knows. 6/7 of our team are very close mates so may not bother them as much but myself and a few others will not do it if next season starts the same way as this season and will either move to Sunday league cricket or move clubs. I certainly won’t with only a season or two left in me.

I've never understood players who allow clubs/teams to take the Micky out of them barely bowling them (if at all) and then not batting them either.. All in the name of 'league cricket'..

Realistically, if you don't bowl 6 overs at least then you should be batting top 6 week in week out (always the ODD week it makes sense to rotate if quick runs are needed or saving a game)

Anything else and you're being laughed at by the players who are rocking up and being a superstar at YOUR expense.. Unless of course, you just enjoy watching others win/play games for you (you not being you, the royal you)
