Chad's Batmaking Thread (The first Bat Shaper in Scotland?!)
« on: October 08, 2021, 11:48:21 AM »

I'll have to make a proper introduction on this post, so treat this as a placeholder for now! Big shout out though to @jonny77 , @Perkins17 , @hell4leather cricket , Rob Pack, @wilkie113 , @procricket @hit4six  and a bunch of others for all the help - from showing me how to use the tools, suggesting setup plans and how best to go about it, helping sharpen my tools and prepare partmades, showing me some techniques and also encouraging me to give it a shot. (The list goes on, and certainly doesn't include how to drill a hole straight...)

Finally getting round to updating this post - here is a pic of the setup. (Do excuse how messy it is, and hardly state of the art or organised, but it's functional!)

For the main hand tools, I currently use:

  • Narrow Round Bottomed Plane
  • Wider Round Bottomed Plane
  • Flat Bottomed Smoothing Plane
  • Wooden Spokeshave for shaping handles
  • Windsor Travisher (Very expensive, but also delightful to use)
  • Stubai Drawknife

I also have a drum sander which was indirectly purchased from @hit4six off the person who bought it off him. I have coupled this with a Record Power extractor with a Dust Hood. I pop this behind the sander while stuck onto my powertool storage boxes. (Agricultural, but works.)

And of course, we can't forget the PPE, so we have a Dust mask, goggles and ear muffs. (Extractors are loud)

My trusty Record 24 vice and also a makeshift rest, which was made from some off cuts that came with the self assemble bench, and also some polystyrene. (Unfortunately, not all of us have furniture makers as friends, who will make us a posh leather one @jonny77  :D )

And lastly, my Festool extractor and orbital sander for finishing.

Okay, so first bat I've ever shaped up, and it was difficult! I used a GM Maxi old style bat for the edge template and also as reference for swell position. I wanted to make a small edged convex bat with a high spine. Shaping is actually very difficult, and easy to get wrong from my limited experience so far - much more respect for the Masters who do it so easily!

This ended up weighing in at 2lb 11.5oz with grip and some fake stickers. Pictures taken without the stickers ofc, and was weight a smidgen above 2lb 11oz. :)

Very decent effort for your first attempt! I’ve got to reiterate what Dave says…

Hi @JB , thanks for the kind words - this is a H4L cleft, but I think this one I got from @hit4six when he had to stop Crossbat Cricket. Had a decent amount of wood in it, was around 3lb 2oz, and would have allowed a spine up to close to 70mm I think. :)

Hahaha the piano helps for sure, probably helps hide a multitude of sins! I have you to thank, you were one of the ones who encouraged me to give it a shot! Thoroughly enjoyable :)

Thanks Mark for the kind words - I dunno how you get yours to look awesome so consistently and quickly - this took me ages to get to a state that I was kind of happy with! Yes, it is definitely addictive - it was so enjoyable to see it slowly take shape. I wasn't too happy with the bat pre-finishing, as felt I had ruined the flow of the profile, but can't judge the shaping till the final sanding is done haha. :)

That looks a cracker mate. Finish looks super clean for a first bat. And the willow looks great too.

Chadders that's a fantastic looking bat, and a 'proper' shape too :)

To be fair, the amount of willow you're packing you should know a thing or two about a profile ;)

That looks awesome, I would be very happy to use a bat like that.
