Morgan retires
« on: June 27, 2022, 10:53:46 AM »

In not partularly shocking news, Eoin Morgan has retired.

Jos will be the new skipper I assume.

What a legacy he leaves.

Great captain, will miss watching him play for sure. I am excited for a new era though, things are still looking good for the white ball team.

He certainly leaves the team and set up in a far better place than when he took over. For me, Morgan was one of the pioneers in the shorter format of the game in terms of attitude, aggressive shot selection and positive thinking  - his captaincy was a breath of fresh air and will be interesting to see what he does next. Assume will keep playing this season at least?

I’d go much further, I would say he is up there with the most influential captains we have ever had. The World Cup win followed just 4 years after we were embarrassed playing a version no one else was in 2015.
He started by creating a dressing room open to all and respectful of all cultures and religions -that put players at ease and in fact the one day team mirrors our society-multicultural.

He also said from the outset he is Irish and proud of it, never trying to be something he is not.

Form and injury has caught up with him but he is a legend of a Captain.a template of team ethics and bond will be my lasting memory.

Simply outstanding.

What a great captain and steward of the sport! I will miss watching him play.

His are big shoes to fill and I don't see who has the leadership mettle to play the role.

This is going to be tough for ENG white ball side.

Just about the only real criticism of Morgan is that he didn't pick people he didn't like - mainly Hales.

The counter to that is England generally still won, so doesn't really stack up.

Let's hope his legacy remains and England continue to push themselves now his hand is off the tiller.

Great period under Morgan, he's been a top captain but think with the ODI batters we have coming through, it was the right time. Obvious captain replacements are Butler or Ali and with the talent at their disposal, i don't see it being a problem for either

The main issue is trying to pick a team, especially with the batting they have. Who will come in for Morgan?

YJB, Roy (with Salt pushing), Root, Jos, Stokes, Livingstone, Ali, etc. feels like a solid top seven

The current depth in batting is ridiculous, which is a testament to Morgan setting out what players would have to do to get in. How many top 6/7 bats do England have who would potentially get in any other side in the world - 9 or 10?

That's what i had. Add in Malan, Brook, Vince amongst others who you'd say could all cut it at International level and you've got a formidable line up

Totally agree with you guys, we could field 2 very strong batting line ups.

Morgan was taking a space but he would of known we are bursting with batting options

Jos will be good I reckon

Not forgetting Banton, Smeed and Jacks who have all excelled in T20 too.

Yep, there's more coming through. Was just thinking of the ones who could maybe step straight up in ODIs. There's a rich crop of batting talent

Am I going mad or has Banton not played some ODIs already?

He has, but don't think he's had a great Blast this year. Just not sure he's fulfilling the potential he showed early on and others have overtaken him recently in the pecking order. No doubt a great talent tho and wouldn't look out of place by any stretch
