What does everyone use for boning the edges of new bats? Is there any effective tool to use?

There are a few you can use, counter of a work surface, rolling pin, grip cone or one of Elviar's tools.  Gentle knocking in will also round your edges. Personally I use a work surface I have at home and a rolling pin. Depends of your level of patience/skill.

Thanks

I've been using the rounded middle section of an LV mallet, seems to work fine.

Basically anything harder than the willow itself, which will compress and round it over. I use a piece of dense hardwood similar to Lignum, which I've rounded into a rod and use on all my bats prior to sending them out. Edges are slightly sanded too before this. Although the modern trend is obviously to keep them sharp so the edge appears bigger, especially with the flatter faces.

I use an Elviars boning tool, not cheap for a non bat maker but they are excellent for doing the job perfectly

I have used a length of 1" galv waterpipe, but the surface has to be very smooth.  For that reason I've since used some large, chromed sockets out of my toolkit, with some beeswax or linseed oil for lube.
