Last Saturday I was in a cricket shop. Father and 14year old son came in looking for new bat. They'd brought his match bats in which were both SH at 2,7 in weight. One ST, one GM Icon profile. He preferred the pickup of the 'Icon' and was considering going up in weight. Nearly all of the bats were 2,10 and up so with some new stock of lighter bats coming in a few weeks they'd agreed to come back and compare then.
We'd chatted about bats and I know the owner pretty well so before they left I asked if I could try something. His bats were full of cherries, top to bottom, he didn't lend his bat out so the were all his, only 1 or 2 nicks on the edges, a better batsman than me then. I remembered something that Jake had said able how to choose a bat on balance and not on dead weight. He played a number of drives with only his left hand and I asked him to play some hook and pull shots. Whether it was today or in a few weeks, he was going to get a bat so I asked him to bear in mind that a heavier bat might slow him down so to picture himself in the nets playing the same shots. Couldn't tell you if he would feel comfortable saying it was too heavy but he seemed very sure it felt good.
5mins later they walked out with a very nice Salix performance. Everyone seemed happy, only me wondering if I gave the right advice. Time will tell I suppose.
