Youth move from Harrow to SH.
« on: February 21, 2023, 08:54:42 AM »

My son is 15 this week, currently using a Keeley Harrow bat, about 2’5”. He is 5ft8, average build.

When is recommended to move him onto a SH? I won a new bat in my clubs fantasy league last year that I don’t need. I’m considering getting it  weight reduced to about 2’7/8 for him to use. It has a full spine down to the toe which I think would help pick up lighter if removed.

Depends on how his height is distributed. If he's all torso then maybe you'd wait a bit longer, if his height is more in his legs then he could use a SH now. I think most height charts say 5"9 but that's a bit simplistic IMO.

My son is 5ft 6in and 14 - he's all legs so has been using a SH bat since June last year as the Harrow and Academy sizes felt small for him. Best is to pick one up - Mine uses around 2lb 8ish

I would get the weight taken out of the bat and let your son have a try with it to see how he gets on.
If he grows like a normal 15year old he will need a sh bat by the summer.

Thanks - whilst I would never buy a bat to take weight out of, seeing as this was an unneeded freebie it makes more sense.

Last Saturday I was in a cricket shop. Father and 14year old son came in looking for new bat. They'd brought his match bats in which were both SH at 2,7 in weight. One ST, one GM Icon profile. He preferred the pickup of the 'Icon' and was considering going up in weight. Nearly all of the bats were 2,10 and up so with some new stock of lighter bats coming in a few weeks they'd agreed to come back and compare then.

We'd chatted about bats and I know the owner pretty well so before they left I asked if I could try something. His bats were full of cherries, top to bottom, he didn't lend his bat out so the were all his, only 1 or 2 nicks on the edges, a better batsman than me then. I remembered something that Jake had said able how to choose a bat on balance and not on dead weight. He played a number of drives with only his left hand and I asked him to play some hook and pull shots. Whether it was today or in a few weeks, he was going to get a bat so I asked him to bear in mind that a heavier bat might slow him down so to picture himself in the nets playing the same shots. Couldn't tell you if he would feel comfortable saying it was too heavy but he seemed very sure it felt good.

5mins later they walked out with a very nice Salix performance. Everyone seemed happy, only me wondering if I gave the right advice. Time will tell I suppose.

I'd say that sounded good sensible advice. I coach kids too, and they all want to smash it with a big bat.

My lad isnt that muscly, so I know he doesnt really want a heavy bat.

I also coach ladies, so if my lad decides he doesnt like it, then I know one of the ladies will bite my hand off for a good lighter bat.

Do any of our resident batmakers offer a bat lightening service?

Can recommend @jonny77 at Scott Cricket or @Red Ink Cricket if you want work done on your bat. Had major modifications done to bats by both and all really good work and good guys to deal with.

I would say that's it's too much to ask shadow play hook and pull shots with one hand. No one plays these shots with one hand. It's more unrealistic to shadow these shots with left hand, because being a right handed batter, these shots are controlled with right hand and vice versa.

Yep, true. I only asking him to play the drives with his left. The method used was the one Jake described where you get them to take up their normal stance and while stood behind them take the weight of the bat in one hand and ask them to remove their bottom hand.

While I'm sure it works, I'm sure there's a bit of salesmanship involved. In this instance, if you have the chance of walking out of the shop with a lovely Salix there and then or wait a few weeks, what would most 14 year olds choose?

What would most grown men choose, let alone a 14 year old 😅

2,10 on the sticker. Not sure of profile but it had the high-ish middle he wanted with enough meat in the toe.

I know, same here. The thing is I'd tried to visit Salix the day before. I'd phoned but there was no answer and it was on my way back to the Chunnel so I thought I'd take a look. The gate was locked and as I was stood there someone behind me asked if I worked there 'cause he wanted to pick up his repaired bat. I said no but maybe I could help as the doors inside were open. I shouted 'Andrew!' and thankfully someone came walking towards us. Seeing as I would take up more time than someone picking up a bat I left them to it. I'll phone more in advance next time.
