This is what the Koyrod does as well as its essentially an excellent material so single impact but crushes pretty easily. We looked as similar when called into help TeamGB with their cycling helmets as they needed to pass the BS safety standards but be as aerodynamic as possible which means as thin a protective layer as possible to keep them close to their head.
F1 were using a honeycomb alu foil type material in their bodywork to keep the weight down but add impact resistance if coming off the track etc. The air system was perfect for it but we didn't have time to do the design work and produce tooling in the 3 month period before the 2012 Olympic games sadly.
Having updated the BS safety standard in 2013 from 2 impacts per test site to 1 it was to broaden the materials that could potentially be used in the helmets. Cardboard cycling helmets for example are available, drinks straws were used for some helmets too that were extremely lightweight, cheap which all helps consumers given you're now being told to throw the helmet away after a single impact.
