« on: July 12, 2023, 06:18:26 PM »

So it’s not a Sports Direct special……
Came across the advert on inastagram.
Looks like they are made to measure.

Just the £440

Great to see them continue innovation in the helmet market…They wanna get an air liner in them 😂

We did the head mapping about 10 years ago when working with F1 teams who were making the carbon fibre shells. Great thing to use as they do it for their drivers who wear the helmets for much longer periods than we bat in ours.

I wondered when someone would ask about the helmets being used in the Ashes. They look like they have a bit more ventilation then the regular Masuri helmets.

That's really interesting - I didn't know that 3D mapping for helmets had been used for that long. I've seen it used in cycle helmets over the last few years, combined with 3D printing as well, so I guess this idea is similar. I suppose the new LIDAR capabilities in iOS in iPhones and iPads has made it more accessible to do this kind of mapping. Out of interest, can you say what method you used? Laser scanners?

Even the cheaper option is too expensive for the level I play at, but I'd be interested to know if they are comfier to wear than at present.

At first look I didn’t see the difference in the helmets between the 440
One and the 260 one …

I thought the 440 was a pricing error . What’s the difference ?

This goes back to around 2009 now when we were asked to look at a "traditional" shaped helmet, we used a CAD company based in Leamington spa to do the original design and work and subsequently the second shape. They had a similar thing to what masuri has but used a swimming cap and laser-type scanner that you see them scanning F1 or car parts with now to transfer into a model. We were trying to work out the head shape to form a conventional-shaped helmet whilst keeping it as snug as possible.

Needless to say things have advanced slightly in the last 15 years in terms of the 3D capabilities and technology. I've got a pic somewhere of the result but it'll take some finding after 15 years of files!

You would be a bit gutted if you spent 440 on a lid then got hit and it cracked the first time you wore it... I mean it would have done it's job. But ouch for the wallet.

This is what the Koyrod does as well as its essentially an excellent material so single impact but crushes pretty easily. We looked as similar when called into help TeamGB with their cycling helmets as they needed to pass the BS safety standards but be as aerodynamic as possible which means as thin a protective layer as possible to keep them close to their head.

F1 were using a honeycomb alu foil type material in their bodywork to keep the weight down but add impact resistance if coming off the track etc. The air system was perfect for it but we didn't have time to do the design work and produce tooling in the 3 month period before the 2012 Olympic games sadly.

Having updated the BS safety standard in 2013 from 2 impacts per test site to 1 it was to broaden the materials that could potentially be used in the helmets. Cardboard cycling helmets for example are available, drinks straws were used for some helmets too that were extremely lightweight, cheap which all helps consumers given you're now being told to throw the helmet away after a single impact.

These are just designed for the pro's surely - having played a good level of club cricket for nearly 30 years, I just can't see this level of protection being relevant to 99.9% of amateurs -  Much like the gel cushioning in pads now, can't ever recall anyone complaining of a bruised kneecap.....

Has anyone bitten the bullet and got one of these?! Or seen one in person?

I'd be really interested in seeing some more photos, or hearing if they feel any different at all.

Not yet, but it will be interesting to see what turns up at press season /winter nets.

I can confirm I haven't got one, or got one for my kids.
