Help needed! Worst form of my life
« on: July 21, 2024, 06:42:15 PM »

Hi all,
For context, I’ve been playing for nearly 20 years, 36 years old.
Have scored 5 tons, play an average standard (Hampshire 3 on Saturdays, also play Wednesday evening league, tues or thurs league when I can, the occasional Sunday)
My fielding is still good, I’m not dropping catches or making blunders

BUT
I can’t score a run for love nor money!

I think I’m at 4 ducks for the season, getting teens or very little.
I have had 2x50’s on an evening league mind

I asked to go down to the 2s and to try and re find some form and got out first ball, under edge off a drive to the keeper then today 2nd ball, which may have kept low.

I’m still timing the ball well I just don’t seem to be able to build an innings.

I usually attack the ball but can also push the ball around.
I’ve probably played about half of the games that I played last year due to weather, work etc so I’ve not hit as many balls for sure.

Any advice greatly appreciated

Have you tried buying a new bat?  :D

Of course, got a Kookaburra stealth 1.1  ;)
It’s a beauty.
Not as big as my Ghost though, I’ve even sent that away to get fixed thinking it could be the new bat

Is it a technical issue (are you getting out in similar ways)? or is it a mental issue. Do you go out to bat thinking that you are going to fail? Everyone goes through ups and downs. Go and have a net with a teammate and just bat for 20-30 minutes, don't think about anything apart from watching the ball.

But next time you go out to bat, believe you will play well, and score runs. If you think you are going to fail...you probably will.

Draw a line over what has happened so far this season and start anew.

Just bat, the runs will come. My logic always in runs of low scores is just bat, even if it takes you 30 balls to get going the runs will catch up with middle time. Rare in village cricket for the teams to use all the overs every week, spend as much time as you can out there for the 2s, when the feet and head start moving you'll start getting runs and an innings.

May be a long shot, but have you got access to any video footage of when you felt in better nick? With frogbox and live streaming becoming more widespread, I find it really useful to look back  at footage of when I was in good nick and see if there’s anything different going on in your set up etc. It’s been really helpful for me recently with my bowling and helped get back to basics when my action (as a SLA) felt too busy and I’d lost confidence in it.

Otherwise, maybe get yourself booked in with a good coach in your area for a couple of sessions, and get their feedback? It can sometimes be a tricky one to change too much mid season without the chance to groove any tweaks, but they might spot something that’s easily fixable which could make a difference.

That aside, just try not to put too much pressure on yourself and if you’re getting out to a certain shot regularly perhaps try to avoid that, or get a team mate to help with with throw downs after practice.

Good luck and hope you work through it - sometimes there can just be bad luck involved too, I always remember Ian Bell saying he nicked off more when he was in great touch, as he managed to edge balls he’d usually play and miss at!

The runs will be all the sweeter when they do come, stick at it buddy 👍🏻

Otherwise as said above, perhaps time for another new bat 😬

I'd be cautious going to a coach who has never seen you bat before. I did the same several years ago after a dip in form and it absolutely ruined my batting, the guy had me change all sorts of stuff and ultimately it made things worse.
My advice would be get a few of your club mates to help you in nets. They've seen you batting at your best and they know what it looks like, chances are they'll be able to help identify what (if anything) you're doing differently now to then.

Been caught behind a couple of times which has rarely happened until recently! So yes could well be technical

I know a few people have joked about it being the bats fault (when isn't it :D) as well as some solid advice regarding the mental side....

Have you considered even the somewhat silly things like ALL your kit fits properly? Now I'm sure there will be members reading & chuckling thinking "what is this idiot on about" but last year was one of the first seasons where I made sure pads felt comfortable, gloves fitted properly and weren't too too worn, the helmet didn't feel too heavy and most importantly that my bat weight was more realistic without a side of ego thrown into the mix! It was amazing how checking all this took sooo many useless and dead thoughts out of my head (as well as obviously giving a small physical return back) so I could just focus on watching the ball. Biggest change was moving to the GEM sized gloves as I don't have the biggest hands and had just typically ordered Mens RH knowing that various brands change vastly.

I know that might be a bit of a left field suggestion and will no doubt give some of the members a good giggle at my expense and by no means am I meaning you need to become hyper analytical with you kit but it's just another avenue to consider to give a bit more mental clarity at the crease in my experience.

My goodness, following this with a lot of interest… same here as the OP (but without all the centuries).

Had a couple of jaffas, but otherwise just cannot stay in. At first it was probably a little of the switch from bouncy winter nets to early season pudding pitches, but it is now definitely a mental thing - all I can think about is “do not get out”, right before I get out.

Was in the same situation as you for the last 2 seasons prior to this

Just went right back to basics. Middle stump guard no trigger and playing in the V don’t play the cut shot as has been getting out for years so just don’t play it. This season avg 49 2 x 50 scores don’t bat that high any more for political reasons and don’t play as much but find I enjoy it more when I do play.

Chill out, go back to real basics and smile it will turn it always does

This is a good call, we have a frogbox for our home games

Hadn’t thought of that thanks

Yeah I hear you for sure, we have a a good coach that’s started playing with us this year so I’ve reached out to him.

I fully hear what you’re saying
