Hi Guys,
A friend of mine is obsessed with getting a kahuna 1000 and we were chatting today and i tried telling him that maybe he should consider a Redback, SAF etc but no joy. I was just wondering if anyone on here has ever used one? If so was it really that good a bat? As i have never seen one, in a shop or being used at the Uni or ina club match. Being in Devon you see an awful lot of Redback cricket bats and up in the nets at Exeter Uni a wide variety of bats but i did see a lot of Newbery bats especially the GT335. So come on guys spill the beans on the Kahuna 1000, as are they not just made in India by SG? Or do kookaburra make them in Aussie land?

True, agree with Wazza on that! But, there is one major flaw with their Big Edge thingy, it means you can't slide in your bat very well- its on the Wisden Cricket Equipment Site.

As far as Kahuna 1000's go, one of my mates has one and it goes like a gun.
Don't have the slightest clue where they are made.

Not by Kookaburra as Kookaburra don't make bats, they're just purely a name

Again true - for close to �300, you've got to be getting some stunning bits of willow. If he looks like he's set on it, he might be going on value, so a cheaper bat won't do the job, though it might be better.

I see exactly where you're coming from though mate: redbacks, newbs and safs are amongst some of teh quality and yet affordable bats this forum has to offer!

But there you go..

Yeah i think my mate is barking up the wrong tree as i reckon a Redback, SAF, Newbery, Gun and Moore etc are damn good bats and offer good value for money, but are Kahuna 1000's really that good or is it just really good marketing ar they worth the best part of three hundred notes though i see you can get them now for �219.99p on some websites but my mate is out of luck as he cant a light one 2.10 or under for this price.

They've never been made in Australia, SG make all the bats.

I've seen some Kahuna 1000's this season and the shape is not as good as the older ones, I have a RP but not sure if they are all this good?

SG will buy a huge quantity of willow and no doubt will have masses of top quality clefts. I have not been in their factory but would guess that their method of pressing is similar to others in India. In which case some will be great, some OK and some poor. I would say the main problem with big brands is that the purchase is a lottery, the smaller makers (not brands) seem to be able to control the quality better. If you can choose from a good quality then you will get some great bats, I chose 4 Blade 950's this year from 50+ and I only chose the ones I liked and thought were great.

If everyone bought a Redback then they would be using mass production methods and consequently the same questions would be asked of Gary. It is a double edged sword I'm sure.

Mike, i'm guessing that's why fake (and almost identical) Kookaburra stickers come out of India.
I guess Kookaburra knew this was going to happen, but wanted to save money!

have seen a couple of these bats made for sponsored players on the local circuit that look good and perform well, however i have tapped a couple up in a sports shop and wasnt very impressed.

Still seems crazy guys as with all the top quality bats bought and owned and changed hands and played with by forum memebers on this forum no one seems to have owned a ricky ponting Kook or Kahuna 1000. Makes you wonder where ponting does get his bats made or from? Any of the bat makers or traders on here know?

I heard a while ago Bradbury made Ponting's. I don't think Julian Millichamp does.

yeah i was told by a guy at Lords a while back he gets his bats made my Paul Bradbury but you hear a lot of rumours don't you!!!

i had a Ricky Ponting kahuna for nearly two seasons, it was a decent bat. It took a while to start going-ages in fact and when i cracked the toe slightly i bought another bat. Went back to the kook after a little while and it started to go like a train! got mine for �180 i think. Tbh i would buy another but not at 300 odd quid. Hope that helps

To my mind a �250 Kookaburra will not compare to a �200 Redback, Vantage, H4L etc etc. Apart from the odd blinder that slips through I would assume they would be consistently inferior (just my opinion).
