Batting at the Bottom of the Order
« on: October 19, 2010, 06:31:03 PM »

Does anyone else have to do this job?

I bat at 9, 10 or 11 and quite frankly it's crap! You either have to see out 27 overs for the draw without scoring (never going to happen) or bash a quick 20 off 4 balls to win the game (often attempted, rarely executed).

Sometimes I feel that the rest of the team view the last pair as the men to get them out of the sh*t when they have messed up - which should therefore make us the most valued batsmen in the lineup.

..and as for you opening batsmen - 'nurdling' indeed! what the hell is that? You'll never catch us boys attempting such a thing - give i some humpty I say.

Everyone knows that the boys at the bottom are desperately frustrated batsmen.

Fattus. Career high score in 20 years - 40* (off of 20 balls mind you!)

I bat at number 6 and have the "pleasure" of batting with the tail on a regular basis.
I get plenty of pressure from being the one expected to get the runs, however have found that the tail tend to score a lot more freely. And in a situation with us losing lots of wickets, I tend to bat through the innings and let all loose towards the end. High score - 72* off 58. (50-72 in 10 balls :D)
And then there are times when pressure is too much and I splice an attempted heave over midwicket.

Having a batsman in always takes pressure away from the tail.
IMO, the tail should just go out and play their shots, its not their fault the rest of the team (No Swears Please!) up!

I've batted at the bottom of the order a few times, (although I open now). I always found if you and your partner had a good understanding of eachother then you can rotate the strike and then bowlers can't bowl to a strict plan. I always try to keep out anything straight whilst trying to stay in and anything wide play shots and not slog, try and keep the ball on the ground so it takes out a way of getting out. If we need quick runs then I try to play cricket shots still and keep it on the ground but play more shots and hit the ball with more attacking intent.
After all the best feeling batting is contributing to the batting innings positively :)

i had to do this for most of this past season and all i can say is my score batting below 8 was 11*
Luckily half way through the season i got the nod to go in at the dizzy hight of number 7 and batted with are number 3 to help save the match and give us some hope of getting some points and after that i moved slowly up the order and the runs came flowing so hopefully next season i will be coming in at 4 !!

I'm a yo-yo player unfortunately- have batted 9 for my 3s but I'm an opening batsman. But colesy, agree totally with what you're saying; perfect sense.

Mr Cat,

Nurdling is what an opener enjoys doing, I would suggest you try to build an innings in a net

I fully intend to at the next net I attend - and I fully expect the bowlers to shout at me if lapse into old habits!

I batted at 3 this year and every other position down to 9. Scored a ton batting at 7, moved to 3 the next game got 30 odd then moved back to 9. Needless to say Im glad that captain has been replaced after only one season!!

As a well practiced 8,9,10 and 11, I'd have to say that my 48* at 10 is one of the highest my club has seen at that position, and it was mostly down to nurdeling, prodding, and encouraging the opposition bowler to get me to try and have a go, very successfully on my part I might add... The oppo captain was very upset...

I bat at number 3 or 4 and I batted with the bottom order in a game which we won where we needed 10 runs an over off the last 7 or 8 overs. It was an exciting run chase and having confidence in the players helps especially in tight games where the tail has to wag so to speak.

Thats an impressive performance by the lower order in the first game. The second game reminds me of my team!

As a wicketkeeper who is very easily annoyed, as most are. It's so much worse seeing a No.11 come in and just start picking gaps for fun. Would much prefer them to have a go, least that gives you a look in. Although played Durham Academy 2 years ago and their number 11 came in and smashed a textbook cover drive on the up first ball for 4 all along the ground, which was rather scary!

ive batted 7-8-9 for maybe around the last 3-4 years.

allways used as a pinch hitter just to go in and get as many runs as possible in a few overs.
used to annoy me a bit cos i couldnt get a propa ingings in and get a big score but scoring 20-30 2-5 overs was allways ok.

the last few season ive been in the top 6 and been doing ok :)

i dont change the style of my batting i just hit the bad ball and knock back the good one.
