Crouching!
« on: November 16, 2010, 10:14:25 AM »

Just read the back lift thread...

and got me thinking when i bat i crouch before i play every shot instead of standing tall and upright!

is this a big disadvatnage to me?

it looks awfull!

anybody else do this or see anyone doing it?

i some times see Brian Lara doing it but that is the only one!

If I was to crouch I'd look rather like a spider crab and wouldn't be able to play any shots at all... But then I guess you must be relatively compact?

Lol. Not a small fella... Not quite as tall as I though, and I wouldn't call it crouching, more setting yourself with your weight on your front foot.

I haven't looked at the video - but your stance should be a comfort thing, but a bad stance can occaisionally inhibit your strokeplay.

If you do try standing a bit taller it will change your perception of where the stumps are and your guard should also change.

Personally I would always encourage a batsman to stand relatively tall as it allows you to move your head/eyes less from when the ball is delivered to when you hit it, especially if you are facing a barrage of short bowling.

Loving the slap through cover on one knee! You look fairly imposing at the wicket mate!I quite like your stance it is quite unique, but perhaps you are still on the move- your weight also seems to falling towards the off stump and you look strong there- but leg side you seem to fall into some difficulties?

You look pretty useful though!

Leg stick problems will be caused by the head falling over a touch to the offside (take cook for example), bit like what golders was saying. It's important to try keep all your body in line - head, shoulders, hips, feet. I have just been videod and I have a slight dip over to the offside, at first we thought it was a big problem, although i take my guard on leg stump and stand quite upright. Been thinking about it, and had a proper look and the dip takes my head and eyes just over off stump which i feel isn't a bad thing? Looking for a bit of help too if possible

Just had a look at your video Simmy, would say your stance is very open, although it is a comfort thing. I would think you would get squared up to anything swinging away at pace because of your shoulders being open? Dont think the crouch is that bad your head is generally still at realease and it doesnt move too far to the offside. Your backlift comes from about gully from what I've seen, which means it's not coming down straight. Inswing bowlers will trouble you? Did with me in the past.

I forgot to say, having seen the video, I don't think you crouch too much.
