Cracks Near Splice Area
« on: January 02, 2011, 07:37:15 AM »

Have been noticing cracks near splice of my bat for a while now so I thought what will happened with the bat when things get worst and which part will break. Also any way to fix it myself ?

Cheers

I am not sure if this is repairable and even if it is repairable how long the bat will last as a lot of "stress" would be transferred to the handle and around this are on contact with the ball and while tapping the bat on the crease.

How old and how used is the bat?

Question for the batmakers on the forum:

Would this be a result of a poorly fitted handle (a marginally bigger handle being hammered into place)?

i had a similar thing on my ca plus 10000. a couple of seasons ago.

you need to get some superglue into the cracks some how.

could be the amount of concaving in the blade, or dryness of the wood, that causes it. just guessing.

ive seen quite a few asian made bats do this.

I know this sounds like a bit of a generalisation, but the pakistani fitted handles tend to have more issues over breaking/splitting than english handles. I know the Hosk purchased a top of the range pakistani bat (cant remember which one now!) and had the handle re-fitted by newbery.
That looks like a pretty terminal crack - it could last quite a lot longer or it could get a lot worse quickly. A quick fix may be inserting a dowell to strenghten the area

I have an asian style bat that had been used for only 3 matches when the handle broke and had to be replaced. Once repaired I used it for another 6/7 matches (in which I batted) before those cracks appeared on it. I complained and sent the bat off, only to be told I would have to pay for it to be repaired. In that circumstance, would it likely to be problems I've caused?

I have always found this problem with Asian bats. I've seen 2 BAS, one RNS, one MB and 2 Pakistani blanks all go in the same way.

Yash, I bought this bat off a clubmate last year in October. It was slighty used but the thing was that the previous owner used to bang very hard on a concerte surface and near the splice area there is a seam mark which was caused by a cheap/hard ball I am assuming.

If it was repairable would it require a new handle?

Over here new handle is quite expensive and it cost almost same as the value of bat I paid. Its $110 Canadian Dollars to get the handle replaced whereas I paid $120 for the bat. I do know MB Malik owner quite well and he will replace the handle for me but I will have to take it to Pakistan and bring it back, just don't know if its worth it or not.

Since last October 2009 I used it 3 times in nets for 3-5 minutes each whereas rest of the time it was used by my brother. My brother doesn't play much of crickter nor he is in any club.

I've had this happen a few times, certainly no point in getting it rehanded I'd say, especially if it's going to involve a lot of hassle/cost.

I'd just keep using it till it gives in to be honest, it's probably worth gluing the cracks with superglue but thats about it.

id put some tape round the top of the bat as the great man has done, it should hold it together a bit and make it slightly stronger

dowelling rods would be the only way to reinforce it as its going to snap across the neck of the handle otherwise which is very hard to glue and keep it strong enough as the natural pressure of leaning on the bat and the ball hitting it will force the gap apart again

haha puma trainers for wearing when doing bats/helemts etc in the workshop rather than ruining new ones!

yeh bit of wood glue in between.....6mm dowelling rods the depth of a drill bit to pinch it together and then glue in with them too to bring it all together....jobs a good un!
