What shape of bat you prefer?
« on: December 03, 2008, 07:18:19 AM »

I was wondering what shape of bat most people like, I mean I have a kookaburra which is extremely thick and has a massive sweet spot, but I als have a slazenger and a screaming cat which are both fairly thin with mid sweet spots.

So do people prefer thicker bats or do they prefer thinner bats?

I dont like a really thick bat id much rather have a thin bat with a good pickup and ping than a tree with (No Swearing Please) pickup. I like a profile with a low middle as i tend to be on the front foot most of the time so that suits me ok, but also with a nice bow and edges about the thickness of a 10 pence coin.

i like basiclley the same as chrissey i would rather have a traditional profile with a slight bow rather than a bat with huge edges such as bats like cgi fatso or SS

Just a bat with good pickup and a good middle. Apart from that i don't really care.

My best bats have all had low middles - I'm very ,uch a front foot player (or at least I have to be on the pitches I play on!) - my current bat also has big edges, concaving and a high spine. Although the last few features probably aren't essential I'm sure they give a psychological benefit, because with such a big looking piece of wood it feels like a lot less effort to play big shots

What weight of bat do you use Johnny?

The psychological thing is a bit part of it.... also a big bat gives the bowlers the heeby jeebys... Swing it over your shoulder a few times and you'll find the keeper stands back a bit as well   :D

2'10 as the batmaker recommended that weight for the shape I was after - definitely agree on the heeby jeeby aspect - hey, that would be a good name for a bat.....

I once bowled at a guy whose bat was so big, it didn't feel like you could get anything past it

I know from experience James makes monster pinging bats at lower weights so that bat must be immense

oh yes, it is! - I'm hoping when it's served it's time to get a bat maker closer to home to try and re-produce it. I've only had it one season though (534@31.41) so I'm sure it's got a few seasons left in it yet

In terms of profile I think this was my favourite bat.

i like bats with a mid to low middle and slight bow.

when asking for custom made bats I like to have a dead weight of 2.10/2.11 but with a light pick-up.

2.10/2.11 is the weight most bat makers prefer for custom made bats as this provides optimal balance between performance and pick-up

Most of the Test and County players have 2.8/10 and the bat makers I know always have suitable willow to make this weight look much bigger.

Still got the Super Best but had some weight off, looks a different bat now! The bat above was about 2lb 8oz with no concaving. Really nice bat.
