If any of you were watching this was a fantastic days Test match cricket. Although England are not playing im sure some of you are appreciative of quality Test match cricket at its best ;) and I havent seen a better opening day for a while. Steyn was quite unbelievable, scary at times and simply confirms his status as the best pace bowler around. Ive never liked watching Clarke bat but this was a stunning hundred at almost a run a ball in difficult batting conditions, a genuine captains knock. Roll on day 2!
-
It would have been interesting to see Clarke's approach had there been a genuine batsman at the other end and if he still would have kept up his scoring rate.
-
Quite right a top days cricket, very classy ton from Clarke after a shaky start against the short ball. I did think they overdid it tho and got him into nick and from there on it was faultless with everyone falling around him. Fascinating series but why only two tests?
-

His batting didn't change, was the same from his partnership with marsh till the end.
-
It beggars belief that the cricket boards from 2 top countries playing at the highest level cant agree or disagree on more than 2 Test matches. I can understand Zim vs Bangladesh playing 2 Tests and 5 ODIs but get real this shouldnt be happening.
-
Quite agree. Aside from the iconic status this series poses so many questions that five tests would be ar better placed to resolve - is Hughes really test class? is Ponting finished? can the Aussies bowl top sides out yet? will South Africa choke again? do they have anything beyond those two great quicks? how will Imran Tahir fare in the Test arena?
-
Surely it affects the Aussies chances of progressing back up the rankings, do you get more World ranking points for beating a lower ranked team 4-0 as opposed to say beating the No.1 team 1-0?? Because of the fewer tests
-
Is that Jacques Rudolph back playing, or another Rudolph?
-
Is that Jacques Rudolph back playing, or another Rudolph?
nope, it is the Yorkshire legend!
-
Happy days, glad to see him back. I like him as a player.
-
Good to hear the JR is back playing Internationals.
Been following it on cricinfo, and noticed following quote...........
Chris: "Morning: Has anyone else noticed that, from the back, the Australians look as though they are wearing sports bras?" Hadn't noticed, will look now.
Could someone who is watching confirm whether they are indeed wearing sports bras? I can't imagine they are, although for the likes of Warne and Gatting, the sports bra came too late! ;)

Noticed that yesterday - think it is the underarmour built in to their new kit - you get it some times with rugby kits.
-
No it's just the cut of the new asics shirts, they have mesh sections in the back.
-

So many questions! I think its fair to say that Pontings best days have gone although he is probably still good enough to get into the side. Would like to see some of these promising youngsters we keep hearing about - particularly in the bowling department. And what on earth has happened to Khawaja and Ferguson?? I'm sure Marsh is capable of opening to get one of these guys into the middle order - theres no future in Hughes in the test side.
Tahir is no doubt something that South Africa haven't had for a long time - an attacking spinner, whether he can get out good batsmen when set remains to be seen. Can definately see him running through the middle/lower order on wearing pitches though. Impressed with Philander yesterday, moving it feet off the seam - would also like to know the origins of his surname!

Good enough - probably, though I think its a risk when they also have Hussey in there that it blocks younger talent. Personally I whint to him that he jumps before getting the push. As for the younger talent, I wonder if they've considered Warner - as was frequently noted in the CLT20, he plays classical shots whilst hitting the ball hard and may actually be the nearest thing to Hayden that they have available. Just a thought...
-
SA are collapsing!!! 77-6
-
77-7, watsons got 5
-
Sounds like the Aussies had 3 weekabix each for lunch!! ;)
-
81-8, like an England collapse of old!!

Warner also averages 59.66 from his 16 first class innings, with 3 centuries and 2 fifties. He would be a much better option than Hughes as he can actually play the short stuff.
-
Who else would get Eoin Morgan out of the test team and bring in Shane Watson in a heartbeat if it was possible?
-
IMO, Marsh should open and Khawaja should go to 3.
-
9/83 - Run out by Siddle
-
The difference is that the 'England of old' didn't contain as many top class batsmen!
When you look as the SA batting unit it is top notch! So it's a shocker when they all fall over!
The fat lady is warming up as it's 9 down now! Will be interesting to see if SA pull themselves together?
Also, unless they get another run or 2 then they could be made to follow on?

Australia has had 3 successful challenges and SA have had 1 unsucessful.
8/34 in the past hour of cricket.
-
The beauty of drs SA can't have any complaints, Superb accurate bowling from Watson look out Johnson is on!!
-
Watson got his 5 in 21 balls - Bloody Brilliant bowling.
-
Remarkably, Australia have a lead of 188!
SA's innings lasted less than 25 overs. Remarkable.
Australia will be hoping to bat SA completely out of the game by posting a 300+ score.
However, who knows what furrther twists this game has in store?
-
47 for 9 since lunch? Sheeez! That's a collapse of Biblical proportions!
Harris and Watson sounded as if they were on pretty good form! ;)
-
Note to the powers that be I wanna see 5 tests like this not 2. This is a brilliant advert for test match cricket and is giving me far more entertainment than a few pointless 20/20 games.
-
Here here. Glad to see the other 2 best test teams in the world having a good old set 2. Shame the Ind-Eng series couldn't be on such a neutral surface :)
-
IMO, Marsh should open and Khawaja should go to 3.
I know Marsh has opened in limited overs but has he any experience in First-class cricket? He seems to have the patience and technique for it, I certainly think he'd be a better player there than Hughes! What happened to Calum Ferguson, a few years ago he was meant to be the next middle order bat for Oz, did he have a few injuries or something?
I agree strongly with the Bird, to have only 2 test matches is criminal. Especially going on the last few series these guys have played against each other.
-
Watson gone early. South Africa still in the game.
-
Watson out third ball of the innings LBW.
Doesn't challenge.
Replay shows ball pitching outside the line PLUS high and missing leg!
If he challenged, he would have survived. Oh dear!
-

Had he reffered it he would still be in. Going down leg and too high.

It's strange as Watson always refers but never gets it right, now he doesnt and he would have been not out, lol

Pretty sure Marsh opened for WA in the Sheffield Shield too. Ferguson did his knee (ACL) when he was starting to go really well in the ODI team, and since coming back he hasn't down much tbh.

Ferguson has an ACL injury which forced him to miss over a year of cricket.
He made his comeback last summer.
-
This is proper test match cricket. I would love to see Warner open for Aus as I think he is an outstanding opener
-

Actually, since coming back he has improved his batting average, so he has actually done better than before. He seems to have fallen from favour though.
-
highlights tonight should be good!
Clark's ton in this match looking like one of the best innings ever played!!
-

I didn't look at the stats, just haven't heard his name much. He deffinately has fallen out of favour though.

The pitch isn't actaully doing much, Watson just put it in the right areas and got the rewards. Was a bloody good 100 though.
-
Smith just put down and absolute dolly from Hughes.
-
The pitch isn't actaully doing much,
Are you kidding??? I know the commentators just said that but the ball is seaming square, and lifting.
-
Are you kidding??? I know the commentators just said that but the ball is seaming square, and lifting.
dunno so much about the seam movement, but the lift is certainly there in spades...
-
Ponting gone, hughes about to be given.
Absolutely jaffer to get Hughes. 3/13 and more than game on.
-
They way things are going a run chase over 250 looks impossible!!
-
Blimey! Are the match highlites being shown on Sky later? :o
-
Blimey! Are the match highlites being shown on Sky later? :o
several times. including late night, which is convenient as I'm off tomorrow! 8)
-
Which idiot said Test match cricket was boring? This has been gripping stuff throughout.
SKY could show it ball by ball and it will feel like highlights to you, such was the session between lunch and tea.
-
Is it the wicket playing up? What's going on.
-
The pitch is challenging, but it's by no means terrible. It's not two paced or anything so unpleasant. It is a reasonably bouncy pitch and there's plenty of swing and seam though.
-
Australia 2nd innings... all out 47 thanks to a 30od partnership betwene Siddle and Lyon! What a game of test cricket!
Twenty two wickets have fallen today by the way! Crazy
-
we sure this track is ok?
-
It's the same wicket that Clarke scored a run a ball 150 on. Solid length bowling letting the pitch do the work mixed in with some brainless shots from hussey, haddin and johnson. watson's spell was awesome as was philanders, wouldn't suprise me if SA got these it's been that type of game lol.
-
For me 220 ish is enough on a track like this
Is it as bad as that track in the windies where they called it off
-
100 looks par :D
-
It's a bouncy green track nothing is rearing off a length breaking fingers!!
-
Track is fine, 1 low bouncing lbw only I think. Still 20+ overs left for today.
-

It isn't a bad track. It's a good bowling track, that's all, and there's been some good use of it. There's also been some very English shots!
-
great battle of wits now - Saffers have over 3 days to chase down the 200 or so runs required. I think they'll do it.
-
JR gone so is this the start of more wickets tumbling?
-
Kallis at 4 could be key here!
-
With everything that's been going on with this match, I wouldn't put any money on who will win it.
I would have said that Aus are favourites but I've given up trying to predict this one! :(
-
Your right pete, No idea who's gonna win, Has been a magical day of cricket so far
-
Who said Test Cricket is boring? :-[
-
Who said Test Cricket is boring? :-[
Exactly, todays play was (and still is) better than any one day pish, no matter how close the finish.
-
Highlights on sky sports 4 tonight @ 6pm
-
A must watch and a definite KEEP on the sky plus player lol
-
All England test matches are shown live in Australia.
Is it not the same in reverse in the UK?
If not, why wait for hilights when you can watch the game live here:

You can thank me later.

On Foxtel? I have regular digital TV and it isn't on that.
-
Yes Foxtel.
I have watched every single English test match since about 1999.
I get to watch all of India's and SA's test matches and most of the WI and Sri Lanka too.

Wish I had Foxtel, but probably good that I don't otherwise I would watch way too much cricket, lol.
-
Foxtel cover the cricket pretty well.
I haven't been happy with Channel Nines coverage when they do get broadcast rights though lately. World Cup once Australia was out left a lot to be desired.
On topic extraordinary day of play, lucky for Australia that Siddle and Lyon hung around for a bit and dragged them past two unwanted records... I feel SA should win from here... but it really is a hard one to pick at the moment!
-
After Lunch:
SA - 9/48
Aus - All out for 47
Extraordinary day of cricket.
-
SA coasting at the moment and as I type, Amla has just reached his 100! Well played but he was dropped twice!
SA require 22 runs to win!
-

The Australia batsmen are a bloody joke, with the exception of Clarke after his 151 in the first innings, other than that a complete joke.
-
What a bizzare game of cricket are they on the same wicket?? Amla gone should allow smith to get his ton, whoever put money on a SA win is a rich man.
-
What an odd test match. It's almost as though in the first three innings, too many players weren't playing a test match...
-

I did, but only before the game :o
-
Strange match! Not quite sure what to make of it really!!
Anyway, I'm sure the Aussies will gather themselves and come back at SA!
Who's going to put money on the next match? :(
-

lol, maybe the rebuild will take a little longer than the green shoots of recovery suggest.
-
Anyone notice SA needed 111 at 11:11 on the 11/11/11 :D
-
And then once they were on 222-1, they lost Amla to make it 222-2 cos it looked better! ;)
Spooky!
-

Think I will wait till each team has batted once and then get some money on whoever is a long way behind!
Unbelievable test match, the only one I can remember that comes close is England V Windies in 2000 (i think) when Caddick ran through them. Test cricket is dead apparently zzzzzzzzzz
-
Graeme Smith is da fourth innings man.
-
actually VVS averages more than 100 in successful run chases.
not saying Smith's was a bad knock - just VVS is as you so succinctly put it "da fourth innings man"

So in the space of an hour they managed to score -90 hmmm
-
Yes?
-
Pretty sure I heard Simon Katich chuckling from Sydney.
-
lol, maybe the rebuild will take a little longer than the green shoots of recovery suggest.
This team (squad) was selected by the discredited (and now sacked) selection committee.
Any team that countains a 37 year old Ponting, ditto Hussey (who at least is more reliable), 34 year old Haddin, shot duck Mitch Johnson and flashy and unsafe Phil Hughes - just to name four - is hardly serious about rebuilding.
Bite the bullet, pick kids and if we get thrashed, so be it. That is how S. Waugh, Boon, Jones, McDermott, M. Hughes, Healy etc were all seleceted at pretty much the same time.
-
Agreed.
Particularly when the best bowler is opening the batting.
-
As silly as it sounds now, Australia held their own and were well on top until they batted for the second time.
Its still a formidable team on paper but they had a piss poor day. I wouldnt be surprised if they won the Second test and drew the series.
-

Is it? I'm far from convinced - Ponting and/or Hussey ought to have been put out to grass, Haddin too, Hughes is nowhere near test class and Johnson an unreliable nightmare. You wonder whether they'd be better going Warner/Marsh/Khawaja/Hussey/Clarke/Watson/Paine/Harris/Cummings/Lyon/Copeland? Okay, Copeland could easily be any one of about a dozen candidates...

Paine is still recovering from a broken finger which he got not long before the Australian season started, so he actualy hasn't played any cricket this season so far. Matthew Wade will be the one to replace Haddin in the short term as he has been going really well over the last 3 Shield games.
-
Also, Ponting should go, deffinately not Hussey. Ponting has scored 1 century in his past 55 international innings. Hussey has actually been performing over the last year, so Ponting would be the one to go.
-
Most important thing is to get Watson down the order. He is not an opening batsman, and his full potential as a batsman is at number 6 to brutalise tired bowlers and old balls. He has done very well as a stop gap, but ideally opening batsmen need to be scoring hundreds (of which he has 2 in nearly 60 innings). He is also Australia's best and most reliable bowler, taking more wickets than anyone, but Johnson in the last 18 months (at half of Johnson's average)
The problem is, now they have done away with the good opener, who did score hundreds and bat long, we have a jittery left handed joke totally outclassed at one end, who needs to be replaced, which means getting Watson down the order isn't the priority.
Also, I'll be disappointed if they touch the bowlers after the first test.... They bowled the saffas out for under 100, and then were horrendously let down by the batsman on a pitch that was nowhere near the minefield that the results may indicate...... I know they didn't go through the saffas in innings 4, but when my team are 9/21 about half an hour after I've finished bowling, I don't exactly feel like getting back out there and bowling my heart out again.
-
Agree with all that.
Watson must bat lower down the order. He is a class allrounder - why kill the goose that laid the golden egg?
Mitch Johnson was a world beater in early 2009, now he is damaged goods.
Cummins and Pattinson in ASAP and Mitch Starc soon to follow.
I would actually gamble with Paine as Marsh's opening partner and bring in Wade as wicket keeper. Paine as a purely specialist opening batsmen has what it takes I reckon.
Rebuild with kids...just do it, we will be better for it.
-
Cummings should defiantly come in for Mitch in the next test and i dont really think Siddle is that great and would play Bollinger.
-
Most of Australia's problems would be solved by dropping Johnson. Since he went to pieces in 2007 over here he has never got back to where he was. He's Australia's Steve Harmison. The batting still looks pretty solid although the dropping of Katich for Hughes seems crazy bearing in mind how out of his depth Hughes looks.....
-
the batting is pigheaded at best - did you see the shots Hussey and Haddin played in the second innings? Ponting is lie Kim Barnett at the minute, without starting his stance at square leg...
They have learnt nothing since last winter when they kept trying to flay quality swing and seam bowling ...
-
Great opening partnership between Watson & Hughes. A few shaky shots by Hughes as usual but also some cracking shots as well... Gee the outfield looks lightening quick. Defensive shots going for 4
-
The way that most of the Australian batsmen play - going so hard at the ball all the time - means that they will get bowled out cheaply quite often, but it also means that when they do come off, it can be fairly spectacular.
-
Cummins bowling brilliantly with a 5 for on debut
-
dont rate tahir lastingtoo long here....expect steyn to cut loose
-
as i was saying....:)
-
Some big bat speed from Mr Steyn!
-
thats definately not how to leave the ball. lol, well done shane!
-
The way umpires handled the match seems highly dubious considering they knew the possibility of rain on the fifth day. No early morning play to cover for 15 overs loss every day.
I have this strong feeling that betting companies have a big say in keeping all the three results alive till the last day.
-

Stop talking pants!!!!
-
So i suppose the Umpires didn't get the memo in the first test??
-
Why is there no one there watching? Really exciting test match, two good sides, all to play for and the ground is empty.... :(
-
I think thats always been the case in SA and NZ of recent years why dont they start on a Wednesday and have the final days play on a Sunday??
-
Seems daft to me!?!?! It's not like the home side are rubbish is it?
-
Early rain might've put a few off lol but yeah you couldnt wish for a better days cricket, Ponting batting for his spot and a chance for Aus to salvage something from the series, madness!!
-
free entry at Jo'burg today
bit different from the 100's we pay to watch cricket(in london)
If mike hussey stays in this could be a famous series-levelling vicoty for the Aussie's....
124 to get
-
Stop talking pants!!!!
Hmm seems like you know all then can you provide a logical explanation to it?
-
Betting has nothing to do with the fact they've lasted 5 days. Everybody knows that the Umpires are rather strict on light now. That's no secret. That, combined with slow over-rates, means that we get less play in a day. TV companies have more to do with it than betting companies, if anything!

It is up to umpires and ICC officials to decide on an early start. I do not find any logical explanation to why they opted against it. The light has become a contagious issue since the power of decision came to umpires.

Because of poor light in the morning, I'd assume. There is always a reason. They don't have to divulge said reason with fans/supporters.
-
Hmm seems like you know all then can you provide a logical explanation to it?
As Tumo has said there is always a reason - it has got nothing to do with betting. I do however think test matches should be played in worse light than they currently are - often conditions are far from dangerous.
-

the bad light issue has always been contentious, long before the decision rested with the umpires
-
Johnson and Haddin fight but haddin goes.
23 to win, 3 wickets, and also the issue of going off for light. Ball is seeming everywhere with new ball which was taken two overs ago
I think the Saffas will get home.
-
Lame defensive, timewasting Saffers. Hope they get what they deserve.
-
Siddle goes. 8/292 chasing 310. Cant see where Australia are gonna find another 18 runs. They are also going quite hard cause light will be an issue in next little bit.
-
18 to win, 2 wickets left could go either way, but I think the Aussies should just sneak it
-
Sounds like an awesonme match to watch if you don't mind who wins!
Why didn't I work from home!! :(
-
That was so close to being out
-
Who said test matches are boring !!
Fantastic, why is it a two match series though ?
-
WOWZA
-
aus win. get the final 18 somehow. a dropped catch in there and a lot of plays and misses. Johnson 40* and Cummins 10* caps off a good debut
-
What a brilliant test match. Australia finally show some fight and finish off a match.
Why couldn't there be a 3rd test ??? ??? ??? Would have been a fantastic end to the series.
-
How nervous did Nathan Lyon look! Reminded me of a young Matthew Hoggard waiting to face Ambrose and Walsh!
Great win for Australia and I imagine they'l be happy with a drawn series?
-
Of course, they have copped a hammering because of one terrible days cricket. Plenty of reasons to be excited about the future of aussie cricket, despite what grubby media agendas maybe saying.
-
and yeah, Lyon did not want to bat, he was praying at one stage.
-
Very happy with drawn series. Really south africa were the better team all series and weve sorta just hung in there in the final session.
We also retain the trophy.
-
Hmm seems like you know all then can you provide a logical explanation to it?
Can you?

Pat Cummings is ledge though.

Cummins definitely looks quite promising

-
Got any latest video of Cummins Langer mate?
-
Hence why he looks promising langer :)
CD only recent video of him i can find is highlights of his 6-for in the latest game.
