Looks like the guy can't help himself http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/cricket/26118114 (http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/cricket/26118114)

Was just about to post this. A case of only so many chances a guy can have. Overshadows a great win for nz. He'll still be in t20 surely as they have a capable outfit in that format.
-
Sometimes you have to ask how many chances are too many? It seems he doesn't take it seriously at all. How many other people would love to have his talent and be in their national set up?
-
The guys got some demons in his head that's for sure. Not much is ever made of Bracewell's part on what now seem like regular pre game piss ups. Ryder seems destined to be the Gazza or Paul Merson of cricket. Could've been a world beater but preferred a drink.
-
Could he be the "problem child" of NZ cricket similar to pietersen and soon see himself ostracised from the setup?
-
The bloke obviously has a problem! Its all very well saying 'see you later mate', I wonder how many people have said, 'look mate, you've got a problem, we want to help'
-

The flip side to that is that he is simply a contractor to NZ cricket. They have no responsibility toward him. Just because he's a sportsperson doesn't increase the burden to the contracting organisation.
Unless of course it was NZ cricket which caused his illness.
If he is the problem, it's his responsibility to work it out. The same as it is fall all of us. If it's the employer, then it's up to them.

Sorry mate, but in International sport, that is absolutely not the case. As it wouldn't be in any organisation. You can't bin some-one off for having a problem. Alcoholism is an illness, not a lifestyle choice! I do agree however, if its just persistent bad behaviour, but it does sound like he's got a problem.
-
Hopefully, NZ Cricket gets behind him and helps him out. It would be shame to see one of the most talented cricketers NZ has produced not playing at the international level (generally, I would make a snide remark about them needing all the players they can get.... but they are actually quite good at the moment.
Did anybody note the "Bring Back Jesse" signs at the NZ v India test match in Auckland? Is he a cult hero in NZ?
Open question to our Sheep Bothering friends on the forum: Is this the best NZ Side since the mid 80's? (Hadlee in him pomp, M Crowe, Smith, Wright, Chatfield etc)

I can't agree that people in sport are different from another worker. Everyone who works deserves the same treatment, I don't buy it that sport's people are different to you or I. If I worked for a firm on a contract basis and was struck by a mental illness my contract would not get renewed or even terminated (possible with severance).
I'm sure that his illness will get treatment and I hope he checks into the right regime to get back.
I didn't say it was lifestyle but used the word illness. I think you misunderstood that. Neither did I say his was persistent bad behavior.

bracewell is in the same boat. Didnt he split his foot on a binge before the last england series. ?

He did, both seem to get quite a bit of slack from NZ cricket though. On the NZ cricket supporting him what more can they do? It has to be Ryder's responsibility. He had specialist outside support before the last IPL I believe, that's more than what some people need so it must be must be deep set. Could be Bipolar.

They would be on very sticky ground to cancel it *just* because of mental illness, without it affecting your work.
He has had this for more than 12 months I'd suggest, so it is possibly covered by the DDA.
Any righteous employer would always look to help wherever possible, whether it is staff or contractors, within reason.

Haha "Sheep bothering" classic. Poor old Jesse, beaten to an inch of his life while on the drink and now this. We cannot forget it was the night before the 1st test, of which he was the next batsman inline had Taylor's wife gone into labour. Time to give him the flick I'm afraid. Way too many chances already.
Definitely our best side since Hadlee. Best bowling attack we have had I would say. 3 genuine good seamers, Corey Anderson is descent and I think Sodhi once he has settled down will be very good. Throw in our damn good batting line up and its a very solid team. ODI's will be where we excel but tests are getting better every game we play.
-
I would still prefer one final final chance for Jesse. Such a talented cricketer that he is.. :-[

That last test series in Australia, NZ was on top and probably deserved better than 1-1. Doug Bracewell was fantastic (any relation to John Bracewell/Brendan Bracewell?), has his form fallen away? Or hanging out with Jesse too much?

Brendan's Son!
Brendan is classic. Hard as nails and loves a good brew. Used to train at his home and he treated Dougie pretty harshly (Well yelled at him a lot). Funny funny guy.

1 all in a 2 test series. Aust won the 1st test by 9 wickets and NZ won the 2nd test by 7 runs. Can't see that NZ was on top and deserved better than 1 - 1. They did thoroughly deserve the 2nd test win though.
-
Maybe, maybe not... Didn't England beat Australia 3-0 in the Ashes earlier on in the year? That result did not reflect how close the series was.
My recollection on the 1-1 series was that NZ lost one session really badly in that first test but otherwise were in control for the series. I may be wrong... shivers, I am wrong all the time... and my memory is pretty terrible at the best of times...

Sadly Jesse did not get picked up by any team in the IPL auction as well :-[

He'll be a very lucky man if he plays any type of top level cricket again.
-
Looks like nz have dropped him from the t20 WC team too
-
Complete and utter waste of talent. Unbelievable player at times and hes just thrown it all away to get hammered.
-
I think I heard that Jesse's dad dropped him off one day at a friends house and walked out on him, moved to Australia. He has had little to no support throughout his childhood and fell into bad habits from an early age.

Yea true. But I guess its time for Jesse to move on from that episode. The guy surely is immensely talented.

Move on from being abbandoned by a member of your family with no warning or explanation??
I'm sure that doesn't leave any deep psychological scars, and you can move on from that at will...

I maybe being harsh here and you never wish bad on anyone (ok, except the ECB, cook, Broad and Warner) but whilst some personal things are bad there is no excuse for behaving in such a way. Ok, so you got shafted when you were younger, or you had a 'bad childhood' or grew up in a crap area.. so what. You know what it's like in that crap situation so work dam hard to ensure you get out of it, your family get out of it and your kids never have to go through it. If you keep feeling sorry for yourself and blaming others then I don't think there can be much sympathy. This guy has got all the talent in the world, if he chooses to act like a complete tool then I'd rather the cricket family and anything associated to it just dropped him completely. After all, why on earth would you want someone like that around.

There comes a point when you have to take responsibility for you actions.

There's no denying that you have to take responsibility, but equally I feel he isn't entirely to blame.
Maybe he should be offered some help instead of being unceremoniously dropped, mental health problems don't just go away over time, and it doesn't take a genius to see there are probably some psychological scars in this case.
Without getting into a long winded debate I think the bloke needs some support from somewhere, just dropping him seems a weak way out, as if NZ are saying "he's not our problem any more" which to my mind shouldn't happen!

He'll have private medical insurance that will cover treatment. NZ cricket (and so the NZ public) owe him nothing. He is nothing but a bloke who happens to be good at a sport. Not exactly a hero!

How would you feel if England did the same to Trott?

No, but who's to say Ryder doesn't have a more extreme case of what Trotts got?
No one knew Trott had problems apart from the Eng team, whose to say Ryder isn't going through the same problems and it's being kept quiet?

I'm not commenting on his illness as I have no idea what he is suffering from. He gets drunk, starts fights and generally acts unprofessional. So as I say, he'll have private medical cover, let them and he sort himself out and then and only then should he prove himself should he be back in pro cricket. Until then, why should cricket or cricket fans pay for someone to basically just pee it up,the wall and act like that?
-
The fact still remains that most of our employers wouldn't tolerate the kind of behaviour Jeese repeatedly exhibits. If we behaved like that we'd be sacked, why should he be any different?
There are many people with family issues, illness challenges and mental health problems who try to hold down a job and contribute.
It's just too easy in modern society to blame over-indulgence and bad behaviour on something that happened in your past.
He's been happy to take the money and the adulation in the past - it cuts both ways.

There is obviously something very wrong with you. Clearly he keeps turning back to going out and getting drunk, or doing something stupid, due to an underlying issue. It's people like you who are ignorant to the fact people have issues, that things get unseen, and people don't feel like they can come out and tell people about it. Yes he's done wrong, yes he's probably annoyed a lot of people. But everyone deserves help.
-
A bloke in my old work came back from dinner smelling off whiskey.
Boss asked why and he said he's spilled some on him while looking for some thing I. The garage.
He obviously didn't believe him as the smell was on his breathe. He phoned hr, and advised to send him home. Which he did.
Hr contacted our personal health department, who phoned and said we could help find out if he had a problem and get health assistance.
He had 3 month of, with help supplied by work to over come his addiction.
Dude came back a changed man, and until we all got made redundant 2 years later never touched a drop again(haven't seen him since).
An employee can help, but only if someone is willing to be helped.

Being an alcoholic is an illness, some people don't realise this.
He needs professional help & support and not to be left alone.

Yeah, I'm heartless and never understand psychological or mental illness. Give it a break, you know nothing of my life, who or what Ives even or suffered. How do you know I've never suffered mental illness? How do you know I've not watched a best friends arm blown off and gone and picked it up for him? . If you notice I never once say about his illness as I have no idea what's up with him, that is for truly qualified medical professionals to decide. I merely commented that just because someone is I'll doesn't mean you bend over backwards and indulge it. As I said, he will have full medical insurance and will (if he wants it!) receive far superior medical assistance than normal people with far worse psychological/physical or mental illness will ever receive.
He's a bloody sportsman, not a god.
As for alcohol, again I'll leave that to a medical professional. I hope he goes away, is surrounded by proper friends who help hima nd he returns in a week, month or year fully recovered.

Some people? Again, don't presume to know personal circumstances. I know all about alcoholism unfortunately.

Did you miss the bit about medical help in pretty much every post?
-
Admin,
I think it's time this topic became locked! Lots of rumours flying about and if it is true that there are professional international cricketers on here they may be friends of Ryder's and may not appreciate what's being said.
-

You know what, I really can't be bothered continuing. Believe what you want. You know nothing and are claiming I've told him to bugger off when all along I've said I hope he gets the medical help he may need.
As said before hopefully he recovers in a day, week, month or year. However long it needs.

It seems like everyone agrees that they would like to see a cleaned up fully professional Jesse Ryder return to do what he does best.
The difference of opinions stems from how much responsibility should Jesse Ryder take for his actions and unfortunately it's 100%. No one apart from himself puts himself into these situations. Maybe he enjoys the attention he gets from being a cult hero, which is probably at least partially because he is seen as a #lad. But, there is a time and a place to enjoy a drink and it is probably not on the eve of a match.
Cricket is a funny sport that does encourage drinking, I've been on cricket tours where the sole purpose is to get wasted (and meet girls, oh and play cricket). I would imagine I am not the only person that has got absolutely hammered on a Friday and woken up hanging and had to play cricket 10 minutes after waking up....
-
He looks in some touch today
-
Pity he can't call a run >:(
-
Our overseas knows him fairly well.
Says he is an absolute animal when it comes to drinking but is also a complete and utter liability because of it.
Apparently, he has a habit of upsetting husbands...

Great knock for him today, I am right in thinking it was Ryder who was beaten up outside a night club last year some time right?

Thats correct.
I heard a story from a mate who played with him at a NZ "academy" a few years back. Apparently during a 3 day game he went out on the turps and didn't make it home. The next day, near the ground they were playing at the team found a clearing in a few bushes where the grass had been squashed down. just to the side was a box of KFC and Jesse's wallet. He had slept in the grass and then played that day after he was found. Classic kiwi lad.

Isn't that what the casino is for?
You realise you don't have enough money for anything so play roulette.
If you lose you were walking home anyway so no loss, best case you end up with enough for a trip to the kebab van/McDonalds/KFC while trying to find a taxi home.
