Hi all,
die to the recent tragedy in cricket, my father has suggested that he buy me one of the new masurivision series helmet as the ear protection around the temple area is better,
do you guys think its worth it and that the comfort factor will be the same or better than my current masuri elite from the end of last year?
-
From what I've seen from all of the Masuri PR that's been put out, I have serious doubts the new helmet would have made any difference at all.
Sadly it is just a tragic accident and I would doubt that any helmet on the market today would have been able to prevent it - Masuri have gone too far on the PR for my liking, I haven't been able to read one article in the news without seeing a load of pictures and quotes about how the new helmet is supposedly so much better and would've been able to prevent the injury.
Bottom line is we've managed with the same helmets/pads/gloves for years with only a very small number of incidents if you compare them with the number of balls faced (and luckily an even smaller number of casualties) - sport, in general, will always have an element of risk and I believe that the current levels of protection are more than sufficient - it has simply been just the most tragic accident.
-
I have the elite Ti and absolutely love it. Its very comfy and has great ventilation, it is heavier than my old masuri steel but that said once its on I cant really tell the difference. The double bar took a few net sessions to get used to and on two occasions during a match i managed to loose the ball completely for a split second.
It wont however stop the ball hitting you in the neck.
-
Agree the helmet wouldnt have saved Phil Hughes, but haveing just got a masuri test series i can say that it was worth the money i really like it and why not get one if you aren paying for it.
If it is the best protection you can get you might aswell
-
I dont think it would have made much difference either but they do seem to offer greater protection in the temple area than the previous masuri models as you say. I'm not sure what the deal is with comparison to other models however
I'd be intrigued to try these masuri's out but i cant find a shop near me that stocks them (in general) or in the larger size for my meatball head! Older masuri's never felt that they fit properly due to the size of my head, almost like it was balancing on top of my head than around the top of my head. I dont really live in an area of great cricket shops so thats more likely the reason i cant try one on
-
The new helmets offer more protection. They are very comfortable in my opinion. Yes they are heavier, but so are many/most new style helmets.
I agree, I am not sure that the new helmet would offer better protection against Phil Hughes' injury, but overall are they better at protecting you than the old style? Yes.
-
Whilst the shape of the grill is subtly different, I don't know whether or not it would have helped in the unfortunate accident that recently took Phil Hughes' life.
If you are comfortable in wearing the best you can get, then there is nothing wrong with getting it and using it. Is the masuri the best that you can get? Well that's a different question. Would it have stopped this accident? Who can possibly say?

If you were standing still and ball coming at you while you looked at point then yes maybe the extra shape to the new grill might give you that fraction extra protection...considering PJH was moving as the ball hit him (almost like someone throwing the ball at your head from an angle behind you) there is no way of confirming or denying that new grill would have saved him. So, yes, maybe a little extra protection.
-
With protection, is comfort the key - if you are comfortable you will be able to move out of the way of the short ball better?

Maybe it will be worth it - but maybe spending that amount of money on coaching against the short pitch ball may also be just as valuable an investment.
Personally I wont be changing my lid for now (I have an old style lid like the one Phillip Hughes was wearing) but when the 3rd generation lids come out, I may look then. (if we assume that the new BSI compliant models are generation 2)
Personally I think those comments from masuri were a damage limitation exercises, no one seriously believes it would have made a difference in this tragic case, i don't think.
-
We have seen a spike in helmet sales, mainly mums and dads upgrading. I won't be changing from my old masuri, be interesting to see if Clarke and co make the change. Like above though, it wasn't a helmet failure, just a horrible accident.
-
I will most likely upgrade to one of the new Masuri helmets, not sure which one though, tempted to go for the double bar grille option as it's safer and I feel it's always better to be safe then sorry...

When you upgrade I'll buy the old one if its green! ;)

Navy blue pal!
Sorry

This new grill design is insufficiently covering the impact area of the fatal delivery to Phil Hughes'. As things stand, upgrading to the new grill design will not make any difference.
I just want to see a completely new helmet design. Helmet manufacturers should look at baseball helmets which provide good protection.

I can't see a baseball style helmet covering the area poor Phillip Hughes was struck.

Even this modified helmet that Jason Heyward wears to cover his jaw I don't think would cover it
-
Good picture.
If baseball is also falling short of providing good coverage, than cricket can lead the way. We need better helmets.
-
That looks like it covers the area of impact to me? You're not gonna be able to protect the full neck, but that definitely looks like it covers the entire cranium. Would be interested to see a cricket/baseball hybrid helmet, you could even potentially put a certain style into it. Only potential problem is restricted movement but given the baseball guys have no problem with it it's presumably not too far away from what you'd need for cricket.
-
Do baseball players keep their helmet on after they have hit the ball to run in?
In baseball their is either a full blooded swing or a bunt as far as my knowledge goes, I'm sure we have a few people on here that have a superior knowledge (Johnny) but there isn't the vast array of shots to cater for like there is in cricket in regards to the range of movement required when wearing the helmet.
It's obviously a hot topic currently but imo the area that is/was exposed is done so by turning your head away from the ball which is natural instinct when an object is likely to strike you.
Without having something that's fully covering the head like a la crosse helmet these areas will always be exposed.
-
Attempt 2 on the picture as the sizing was "interesting"
Yes they have to run in the helmets and true its a full swing/ bunt.
And MLB batting helmets only usually cover one ear as well. But the helmet is modified, as the player had his jaw broken by a pitch.
-
Time wearing it is a consideration as well, baseballers don't bat for hours on end. I know it's human nature to want someone/something to blame but this was just a horrible accident, cricketers have died from being struck in the heart but it's rare to see players in a chest guard because of the bulk. Knowing Hughes a little he wouldn't be blaming anyone.

I agree. Baseball is a sport where that batters are only at bat for a short period of time, whereas a cricket batsman could be at the crease for many hours. A baseball style helmet with the ears/neck covered would certainly provide less comfort and probably be harder in hotter conditions to bear with. It is a tragedy what happened, I like what Masuri have done with their 2014 range where the grill does swoop lower and cover more of that vulnerable neck/ear area, however as mentioned we will never know if that may have saved Phil's life. I do have the identical model that Hughes used in his final innings, I will buy a new lid with the 2014 style grill but I don't particularly want the Vision series as they are some 200g heavier.

If anyone saw the lid that Virat Kohli is currently wearing in the test you can see that his has a slight slant backwards, toward the back of the head and then plateauing at the jawline to create a slightly greater coverage in and around the neck area as can be seen here (if it works)...: (http://s.ndtvimg.com/images/content/2014/dec/806/virat-kohli-mcg-boxing-day-.jpg)
Surely if you incorporated the design of both the updated masuri with whatever integrated grille style Kohli has (or even any of the albions) then you would surely see a more protected area that may have prevented the impact leading to the passing of Phil Hughes. As, in effect the helmet would have an extra couple of cm's to the overall coverage of the back portion of the grille just from a simple backward slant. I do understand that Masuri try to find a medium between high-impact protection and aesthetically pleasing helmets and the 2014 range makes a step towards improving the protection whilst maintaining the classic Masuri appearance.
I've got one of the new one's with the eyeline bar in the steel version and after having the old elite, you cannot actually notice any sizeable difference in weight so i wouldn't really say theres 200g in it, but that may be because it feels more comfortable on the head after being smaller than previous years. I will post up pictures of both side-by-side if anyone wants with the scales in shot to compare and contrast physically.

I would like to see that JG. In the market for a new lid so it would be helpful!

Apologies for the delay!
Just as a note, sorry for the background decoration... The missus has free reign! The two lids are standard mens steel in the stock navy colour. And hopefully the pictures post up, if not then have a look at my flickr (I will post details if you comment) to see them. Also, the missus has given our scales to someone so i couldn't take a picture of that for you all

As you can see in this picture, the spacing between the foremost part of the grille and peak are relatively the same distance apart (the vision series is slightly forward of the old elite) but the peak is more substantial on the new vision series but also the recessed vision series grille piece makes it seem like it may impede what you can see but honestly; i wear glasses and relatively blocky ones at that and i can wear them and the helmet without worrying about knocking.

The side profile of both of the helmets show that the old helmet shape is straight and the grille has a curvature towards the chin all the way through it. Whereas, the new style helmet has a curve towards the back of the helmet that covers the bumpy bit that we have on the back of our heads, which can further be covered by the new lock system, and as for the grille, you can see it has more of a sigmoid shape that then curves to cover more underneath the chin which you may not be able to make out because of it being pushed slightly downwards. As you can see though the grille starts from a little bit further back.

The top on the new helmet (Right) is a lot more flush with its ventilation slots rather than being really pronounced and like the top bead. Furthermore, there has been changes on the inside as rather than having the material all over the place to absorb every bit of sweat your head can produce. They have decided to stick with the material padding on the front to be comfortable for the brow and forehead as well as going for foam for the top of the head with venting holes that get rid of the heat via the new system of channels and cool using the front positioned vent holes. I might add it seems like a brilliant concept! Finally, Masuri have now incorporated a new twist lock system to secure the back of your head and the back of the helmet together which to me is a lot better as it feels more substantial and better fitting, as another little note you can see the peak supports on the new helmet
PERSONAL NOTE
The new range of helmets are a tiny bit heavier but because they are more snug and padded internally as well as the protection, it gives that added confidence when arriving at the crease. The sizes are slightly smaller this year so I would suggest you go in and check out the size to suit you but if i'm honest its definitely something to go for. There also seems to be some additional form of powder coating on the new ones because its texture seems different but overall, it seems to be a lot better to me!

Are there any definitive weights for the vision series floating around?
-
1.1kg for steel grille and 900grams for Ti.
-
Are the test and elite pretty much the same weight wise? Double bar not made of lead? :D

There isn't much difference between the double and single bars in terms of weight.

I think VKS did a vice where they said t was about a gram from memory!

From memory I think the exact difference is around 4gms.

I think rikki wessels would think they are worth it after today's incident

After seeing wessels masuri catch the ball without it touching his face I think masuri just jumped to the top of the helmet pile :)
-
really interesting video. not sure the Masuri is designed to do that, but it has done its job.
no question if that had been an old style Masuri the batsman would have been in trouble
-
If you compare that to Keiswetter. Definitely top at the moment.

Hi guys I recently purchased an Albion ultimate helmet from Sports direct which rrp at around 80 pound. I saw today that they don't confirm to the latest safety regs, does anyone know anything about this? Naturally enough I became quite worried

Don't get too hung up on the safety regulations.
I'm using a Sports Direct Albion with an old Ti22 grill from 2010! The Albion shell is the best mix of comfort and coverage in my opinion, and it's better than not wearing a helmet at all.
It might not meet current regulations, but set the grill close enough to the peak so a ball won't go through undisturbed. If I get one trough the grille with the gap I've got set I'll consider myself very unlucky!
-
Wait, if you're using the grill provided with the helmet the gap isn't adjustable and is smaller than a ball anyway.
Honest opinion is I think they're fine despite not meeting the "current" safety regulations. I'd happily wear an Albion any day of the week :)
-
I tweeted Albion about this a while ago, they are confident about their peaks and haven't in the past suffered in the way the Masuri lids used too.
-
To be fair masuri got alot of grief when they first released the lid. Me being one.
It looked ugly and wrong.
Since then the plastic ear pieces have been changed to standard foam ones. And the stupid flexible peak has been dropped.
Add that when it's in contrasting colors. Ala big bash. It really isn't a bad looking helmet no more.
One may be on the horizon for me. If I can get the colour combo wanted.
-
Yellow by any chance??
-
personally I am still put off by the weight, 1kg pretty heavy for a lid.
-
Yellow by any chance??
No. Sydney thunder green. The yellow lids gilchrist and Sehwag wore in the mcc game last year was tempting though.
-
personally I am still put off by the weight, 1kg pretty heavy for a lid.
Weights a Wierd one. I had a Rawtek titanium last year. This year I've added a standard steel grill aditek to my kit. In your hands and on first fitting you can tell it's heavier. But once a few net shots are played. I forget it's on. Never mind the weight of it.
Hopefully the masuri will be the same.
-
When I first got my hands on my masuri I thought it was very heavy but after a net or two it felt just like any other lid. I think over the years the idea was always to get a helmet as light as possible and people started to forget that their neck muscles could actually handle a helmet which is slightly more weighty.
-
personally I am still put off by the weight, 1kg pretty heavy for a lid.
General consensus seems to be that the weight is irrelevant once it's been worn a couple of times. Also when you consider the safety aspect, then weight should be irrelevant from the outset.
-
I tried a couple of different models of the new masuri helmets in all rounder. Not one of the grills came down past my chin! This bothered me more than the weight, which as people have said I think is something you would get used to
-

What size did you try on? There are 3 sizes available (small mens, men's and large men's).
-
I know, from personal experience, that the new Masuri range are heavy but as mentioned it doesn't feel bad after a net or too. However, the hardest feature for me to overcome is the second bar which is right in the way of the bowlers arm and delivery.
-
I've got a massive head and the largest previous model of Masuri's just didn't fit and felt like it was just balancing on top of my head. Has anyone who may have suffered similar issues tried the new model, is it any different?
-
The mens one fit me but the grilles on the mens & large mens weren't big enough for my face. The large mens was huge, I've got a fairly big head and it was very big on me
-
What about the shrey lids they seem to offer great quality for a good price
-

I've had similar issues. When measured, it's clear that the circumference of my head's not unusually large. But I had the same experience as you. Helmets that just balanced on top. For me, it's shape rather than overall size. I think mine's slightly longer, front to back, than most homo sapiens, or maybe a bit deeper (though no one has ever remarked on it). In the past, motorbike helmets were always problematic.
I tried on every batting helmet going, and eventually settled on an Ayrtek with the ACIS. Even that, though, wasn't ideal, as the grill sat quite high on my chin.
I was really keen to try the new Masuri Senior Large, but couldn't find any shop that had one in stock, so I went to their nearby HQ in December and tried one on. The good news was that it works for me. It's the best fit I've found. If I was to quibble, it sits fractionally low on my forehead, so I might put in some strategically placed foam for the perfect fit. It also has an adjustable bit at the back. Better to have a helmet that's slightly too large, that can be adjusted to fit, than one that you can't even force on.
I recommend you try one.
-
A bit of an update for you all
I ended up biting the bullet and buying the new Masuri helmet.
Honestly I thought it weighed a ton, and I had trouble seeing through it in the shop, but seeing Countless players wearing this helmet walking away unscathed, I decided to purchase it. So I used it for my first net yesterday, and in complete honesty it feels exactly the same as my masuri elite, the weight difference is extremely hard to notice, if not impossible to notice. I found myself focusing 10% on the ball and not focusing about little niggles worked wonders as I had my doubts about this helmet. And as for the double bar, it's just like looking out of any ordinary helmet, although it seems that I have more vision in this helmet than my elite model. Also, it feels like it adjusts better to suit ones head. I found the maser elite to shake around quite a lot sometimes, but with this helmet I don't have the same issue thanks to the fantastic upgraded internal padding and the adjustor at the back, no more of that horrible velcro adjustment!
I am extremely happy with the helmet, and would definitely recommend it to anyone. And it definitely looks better in person :)
-

The Vision Series Large is bigger than the old style large.
We have a customer who had your exact problem in the old style Masuri, so elected not to wear a helmet at all. We have just done a custom helmet for him with his club logo in a large that will be here shortly. He tried on the stock large in store and liked it so much he went all out with the club logo.
-
I second all the recent positive feedback, i have had my new masuri next to my old and the gap between grill and visor is more or less the same. the difference is negligible. i have to also agree with the comfort, the padding is far better and it feels much much better on the head and forehead. anyone worried about the weight needn't be, fair enough i shelled out for the titanium, but my old style masuri was also titanium and i dont really notice an difference in weight when i have been batting in nets.
I would 100% recommend it
-
Add to this the helmet is made in the UK (the grilles are made over the road from us)
This is a feature some people appreciate, not all, but it is a cool thing to be able to say about a piece of sports equipment in a world dominated by the far east and subcontinent.

Just saw this and I know which helmet I will buy next.
