Here is a profile from an off the shelf Six6 and a profile of Joe Root's, spot the difference!

His real profile looks more like a purist profile with a smaller non offset edge
-
I wasn't sure what his profile reminded me of, now you've siad Purist I can see it, maybe a bit of Aura about it?

Aura.
Or
Micheal clarke profile.

Not a great pic but

Very much a Clarkey profile I think

I did notice a distinct difference when I watched him net warming up before the recent tri series final in perth. I was 2m behind the players so could see their bats very clearly and I commented at the time that roots six6 looks nothing like a retail offering. It was almost pregnant looking it was so big, the biggest bat of the players I saw (bailey, finch, smith, falkner, haddin, root, bell, butler, taylor) taylors f18 wasnt any smaller.

To me this is just bizarre. These guys are really free-loaders i.e. they get their bats for free. We, the paying public, can't find big clefts and big ("pregnant looking") bats even though we are willing to pay for them. We live in a messed up world!

Given what I just got from B3, I would have to say that this statement just isn't true!

Of course you can, they just don't come along very often. This mutant B&S weighs a touch over 2'8 for example.

Such bats are rare.

Ditto.

Rare does not equal impossible. I also have a GN dynadrive of similar scale that is huge.
They aren't rare per se. They are just expensive!
-
get the tape measure out.... what are the dimensions of that B&S bat?

Word play. There are many people gunning after those "rare" bats and clefts and before you know it some one else has scooped up the bat or cleft. Rare becomes impossible, then.
-

From a look, I'd guess 36mm edges and a 62-63mm spine. Looks incredible...
-

Definitely not impossible. The demand is high, but the price also tends to be high, so a lot of people gunning after them don't want to pay that much so get put off. If you want a massive bat for the weight, B3, GN, SS, etc all do big bats for their weights. (Stuart Kranzbuler in Aus is probably the one I'd try get a bat made from)
-
Some things are impossible, others only seem impossible.
If you know where to look, then you will find such things far from impossible.
I was playing with a "freak" bat earlier that came from sareen, ping was phenomenal.

Specs? Weight ? Dimensions?
How did you score an SS bat?
-
is the impi for sale jake ?
-
Big bats are for sale no doubt majority not all at a premium price.
The lower grade low density tend to either get snapped up so early.
We carry a big stock of clefts and I can assure you anything 4oz lighter than the volume is hard to find very hard.
For us that means a 360 cleft
-
The Impi sold last week. 40mm edges.

They're so hard to find that my mate went to B3 on Saturday and splashed out on a 356 density crown cleft that looks the bomb and will make a massive but light bat in the mullaney profile. Bear in mind that he didn't ring Streaky and ask for the best willow to be set aside for him. He had every intention of buying a lower grade bat but decided to splash out on seeing the Crown cleft.
It's not impossible @internaltraining, it's just not in the shop of your average sports shop at all often...

Agreed. Its just expensive as any desirable product. Most of the brands can produce these bats.

So, phone calls are ineffective but a 3200 miles will guarantee delivery. That sounds within the realm of possibility. :D

-
And don't forget m&h and H4L. But let's also not forget that 40+ edges and a 70mm spine are also at the edge of what is possible with a regular cleft.
Pros don't get bats quite that big very often.

B3, Red Ink, and H4L.

May be you want to start a thread with your requirements and i am sure you will have plenty of options. Price will vary based on brand.
-
H4l do clefts for an 85 mm spine.
The h4l obviously and the red ink are made from h4l clefts. The red ink was a very dense cleft hence it being trimmed down to 70 mm.
The h4l although small edges. Has a spine at 80 mm plus.but then it is a monster (says so on the sticker)
B3 also use oversized clefts. And weigh in at a 72mm spine

Still using the duck bill toe, personally if I was buying a Joe Root edition I'd want the exact shape and size to what he uses. A little crappy of GM to sell it as a JR edition

-
Has anyone asked @Edward Lowy?
-
Re the root picture. Is there ton branding covered up?
-
There's definitely some tape on the side, might not necessarily be covering something up
Shape does look similar to those Ton Masters that are floating about mind
-
Re the root picture. Is there ton branding covered up?
Could just be a bad tape repair job but it does look dodgy.
My punt is GM don't think the profile will work for the average punter. Professional cricketers hit alot more out of the middle than the average clubie. Perhaps the duckbill was spined up to give a bit more response lower down.
Alternatively GM don't know Root is using a stickered up Ton and will be having words!.
-
Here's a higher res version

I would bet my bottom dollar that Joe Root is not using a GM bat looking at the tape position on there. We all know a large volume of pro's don't use the bats from there sponsor. Especially international pro's they go to most continents in a year and can get best from UK, Asia, Australia, South Africa or what ever so they will always be offered, given or pay for bats that take there fancy, he'll if we all do it why wouldn't a pro.
-
If a company wanted them to only use their bats then they shouldn't give out stickers so they can go and do this surely?
-

yes, why give out stickers? GM have always maintained their Pro's only use their bats and they ought to be come fully stickered, but this does call it into question.
-
Makes a bit of a mockery of his 'Players Edition' as the profile is completely different!
-
No idea if he is or is not usingn a GM, but I'm sure pro's are also capable of lifting stickers off a sponsored bat and gluing them onto one they want to use more.

Very true, wouldn't mind getting my hands on an un-stickered pro's bat if they are doing this as well :D

Is this a practice bat? It looks a little narrow. Either way it has a very meaty profile so I assume it belongs to him - although I don't recognise the stickers.
-
Joe works very closely with us at GM to get the exact bats he wants and I can guaranty this is a genuine GM as it was in for clean up last week and its just tape going across the face.
As for the Player Edition I can't comment as that's more a question for the decision makers.
-
Maybe it's a prototype he's using for a new version of the Six6?
Whatever it is I like it almost as much as I like watching him bat!
-
Whatever he is using, I will have one! The ball is flying off his bat recently. I actually do like the shape, big fan of the duck bill.
-
Doesn't even slightly look like tape covering something up? For one thing, bat tape is pretty transparent, would be a terrible choice for covering a big dark stamp. Pros choosing different shapes to production is hardly big news...
-
Shoulder shape looks like GM.
-
If you look at pictures of Root in his last test and compare it to this one dayer there is a difference in the shape of bat and edges. So to have a Players Bat that is identical is not possible given he has a couple of different shapes.
-
Then don't sell it as such. Don't say one thing and do another.... It's called lying.

I have to say I do agree with this Players bat thing. GM always sold the player issue bats in the players weight & shape, I asked Jake last year to get me a players bat in pick up index 1 but GM didn't do it in that weight it was index 4 only or something g similar. To sell a bat at £600 that's nothing like what your told it is is not on. They don't advertise this is has grade of cleft or anything like that this is sold purely as a exact copy of a JR issue bat and it's just nothing like it.
The guy though in my eyes can use what he wants if he keeps scoring like he is and I would guess the guys at GM could t care less as long as it carrys there labels. After all this forum is about 0.02% of the bat buying folk and that leaves the other 99.8% who will believe what ever the shinny Morrant, PDC catalogue tells them
-
I just had a look on the GM Australia website and they list the Joe Root players bat as his test match bat. Maybe that explains part of it. At best though it might be a bat profile that was used by a player at some stage.

Am going to chip in here, having got my hands on one of Watto's bats I can say with reasonable confidence his GM player issue bats are identical and he has changed his shape of bat over the years while using GM, Chris Read a lad who rolls out for our club has too. But when it comes to player shapes and obtaining them I had Gary at Redback make the most amazing bat for me which was based on the Watson shape and it was massive and beautiful!!!! If not better than his original GM. Don't overlook your local bat maker when it comes to getting a bat in players shape, especially Gary at Redback cricket as he does make some amazingly good bats!!!!
-
"Please note that Team GM product development is a continuous process. PLAYER EDITION configurations shown are those in use by our players at the time of preparation of this Book of Cricket." from the bottom of the above link...think that covers them??
-
Is Redback still going?
I had one of their bats in 2008 and it was superb.
-
Still looks like a duck bill

One thing that strikes me whenever I see pro bats is how simple they are. No scoops, notches, XRD edges or anything. Just plain and simple!

As far as I know Redback is still going as every club you go to in Devon you normally find a Redback cricket bats both old and new being used by players of all ages.

All the weight reduction techniques like scooping, notches, xrd etc are for the paying customers :-) .. Pro bats made from lighter density clefts don't need any of those.

This is from a mate on Facrebook about Joe Root's gm bats...
Cricketers, Big Bat time! Although I have had a strong relationship with Gunn and Moore for many years, yesterday I was given a treat even by my standards.
I'm writing a piece for a well known Cricket mag on how you can use best practice to select a bat, and how test players contribute to the bat evolution process.
Anyway, yesterday I got gifted on of Joe Root's bats (he's gone to New balance so they had 3 going spare)
The noticable thing about Joe's bat is it always looks so wide when he bats- and I've found the reason- the handle is 1/2" longer and the blade 1/2 shorter- like a mongoose, so the bat is more compact and looks chunkier and wider.
If you look at the pic of the bat standing against the wallyou can see the extra handle length
The grain on this is incredible as you can see- it is as good as it gets., as is the ping and pickup (it's 2-11 oz and picks up about 2.8)
Anyway, excuse the badgery but interesting nonetheless.
On the handle it says JR74, which means it's the 74th bat GM made for Joe.
I also got given one of Watto's- it's very very light, big with a VERY high middle. It is 2.10 on scales with 2 grips and antiscuff so c. 2.8 real weight, surprisingfor a man of his size.
I refrained the offer for a pair of Watto's pads as they'd be knackered.

So had Joe Root not gone to New Balance, would the Mana have been "his" range I wonder?
And tell your mate that it would only be Watto's front pad that was knackered, the back one would have been virtually unused :D
-
Just had another thought, would those pictures be sufficient to get this mapped by B3?
Surely as we know the weight too, having a bat made to Joe Root's exact specs would make you bat just like him... ;)
-

actually you saying that reminded me that I heard somewhere GM said they were using Joe Root as a tester in developing the Mana, and this had been going on for a few years do you may actually be right!

It looks like a beautiful bat and a whomever this mystery friend is, He is one very lucky man to be getting all such bats from GM!! I'd love to have that bat off him ;) as well as the job of writing a column on bats!

Very interesting about the shorter blade and longer handle - much like H4Ls war bird!
-
Yes Root had a huge influence in designing the Mana and would be using it now we're it not for his move to NB
-
Very lucky guy! Is the Mana a replica of Roots's actual bats or have they taken the shorter blade and made there own shape?
