Title: 62 Bats - but which ones to keep????
Post by: petehosk on December 11, 2009, 05:44:34 PM
OK - for some reason I find myself with a stupid amount of cricket bats.
I am no hurry, but sometime next year, I will probably want to cut my collection down to 20 or so!
And some people thought it would be a good idea if I list the bats, and people could speculate as to which ones they would keep, and which ones to sell/throw/axe/burn/give to the dog to chew!

So to kick off the discussion, the next post (in 5 minutes time) will contain the list of bats I have.

The 2 Vantage Lithhium are actually 2 of the 5 bats that Kev made and sold on here, after Vantage were happy to use their stickers on them.

Agreed keep every screamer you have! That is some collection! Do you have any poor bats?
Title: Re: 46 Bats - but which ones to keep????
Post by: petehosk on December 11, 2009, 06:06:17 PM
Yep - the latest custom Bradbury is blank. But that wont be for long!
Have some genuine stickers on their way from GCCC.
The CJI fatso is blank, but with 50mm+ edges, its pretty damn obvious what that is!

Title: Re: 46 Bats - but which ones to keep????
Post by: petehosk on December 11, 2009, 06:09:27 PM
Poor bats? Not really. Haven't tried more than 15 of them out in the nets or matches yet.
But this year I will try to get down the nets more and try most of them out.

And the Screaming Cats both feel awesome. But need to start knocking the new one in really!
Title: Re: 46 Bats - but which ones to keep????
Post by: petehosk on December 11, 2009, 06:12:09 PM
Not planning on selling ANY yet!
I have traded a couple of bats, but only as an exception.
Apart from that, I will be more than happy to slog loads of balls in nets sessions and have a whale of a time trying them all out!
Title: Re: 46 Bats - but which ones to keep????
Post by: tommo256 on December 11, 2009, 06:12:46 PM
oh cool....have you tried the Itias out?
Title: Re: 46 Bats - but which ones to keep????
Post by: petehosk on December 11, 2009, 06:16:07 PM
I havennt tried the Itias out, but I do like the look of it!! Its a nice looking bat and feels nice and balanced!

So I reveiwed the Redback this week. Was thinking of doing either the Harlequin or the Screamming Cat next?
Any ideas on which?

Screamer! Would love to see what guys think about the bats!

Regarding the reviews, I say do both ;)

I am amazed at the quality of your collection mate. I honestly thought when I read this topic you would have said 10 awesome bats and the rest lower grades, but I would be happy with 2 of them bats mate, let alone 46! Give me an email if any of them are for sale mate, as I would certainly be interested!
Title: Re: 46 Bats - but which ones to keep????
Post by: Howzat on December 11, 2009, 06:26:49 PM
Have you tried the Custom Bats LE out?
Also whats the Lekka like?
Title: Re: 46 Bats - but which ones to keep????
Post by: petehosk on December 11, 2009, 06:30:56 PM
They are nearly all great quality bats!

You can see my dilemma now! If I decide to be sensible, and cut the collection down to 20, it sounds easy! But then I do seem to have amassed some VERY nice bats!
So which would I keep?  :-\

Anyway, glad I have no time pressure on me.

And will review the Screamer next I think. That way I can review both the 'second hand' Professional Screamer, and the brand new Premium level together.  ;D

Very impressive collection there Pete, I dont suppose your a cricket bat philantropist who's willing to kindly donate a bat or two to a poorly student :) ! I would do the Harlequin review next - I was in the shop today talking to Rob and he picked out two harlequins and the mallet flew off them, very good bats. Also having attempted to make a few bats myself, i can apprecciate the shape of the new distinction/retro, it's a brave shape as there is little room for error.
Title: Re: 46 Bats - but which ones to keep????
Post by: petehosk on December 11, 2009, 06:34:30 PM
Hi Leo

I havent actually tried it out in the nets. But it does feel like a gorgeous profile.
The mallet test came out well, with a great sweet spot!

The only thing I am considering changing is the labels - they are ok, but I think it would look really nice with the plainer 2003 M&H labels on.
And a nicer grip maybe?

But the labels and grip are superficial and easy to change! The bat itself is really nice!  ;D
Title: Re: 46 Bats - but which ones to keep????
Post by: petehosk on December 11, 2009, 06:38:27 PM
Hi there Shilly - alas my generosity doesn't quite stretch beyond regular charity donations!!  ;)

And the Harlequin mallet test was as good as the redback - and believe me, that was bl00dy brilliant!
So it must be something those M&H boys out into the willow down there in darkest Somerset!

I'm willing to take a screaming cat from you which in return will provide the space in your collection ? could look at a swap also as i have a few which it looks like you may not have tried yet ?
Title: Re: 46 Bats - but which ones to keep????

Not planning on selling any yet. And the Screamers would not part with just yet anyway.
Thanks for the offer, but I fear the void in my collection would just be too wide! :)

She hasn't complained - true!
Thats the reason I am under no time constraints, or pressure to cut the collection down.
I will probably end up by still keeping 30 or so in the end!
And cant see that I wont buy a couple moore between now and then anyway!

What a great thread- 46 bats is some collection! I love the DF Attack- retro!

I think you should post pics of each showing grains, profile etc on each one- it would only take you around 46 hours!

One big group photo would be good.

Ok guys - this'll take a while to get sorted.
I will aim for a group photo asap. The only group pic I have is 11 bats, so will update this photo this week with all of them.
My original group photo that some of you have prob seen already is here.

Freelance IT technical Consultant and Solution Architect - doing something called SAP. Which is like a Corporate software.
It's pretty boring but can be complicated. But it keeps me in bats!  ;D

And the Laver is a long blade as I am 6 foot 3, so I am comfortable with a long blade or a normal SH!
Its aroiund 2lb 10-11 and is a suberb bat! Lavers were the first really decent bats I ever purchased, and have never regretted it!

Yeah im as tall as you  Pete made of good stock us mate! haha

Once ordered a LH sent it back just didn't feel right, so changed my stance so i tap the bat between my legs to i dont bend as much . . .saves the back! haha

Thought you liked it as it looks well used. . . .

What type of grip do you prefer Pete as there are a number of different grips in that little collection
Title: Re: 46 Bats - but which ones to keep????
Post by: petehosk on December 12, 2009, 04:04:15 PM
I quite liked the octopus grips, as they always felt secure - but people on here have confirmed that they destroy your gloves after alot of use!

So I like those snake scale grips, or whatever they're called.
But my faves have always been the Aero grips, as they are very light, padded, and the grip on them is excellent.
I understand that there are similar ones called Xtrax grips, which are supposed to be as good as Aero grips, so will try those out soon!

I have used possibly every grip on the market and i was selling the aero ones for a fair bit and i did rate them however the gm is the best in my opinion.

Yes tried a GM couple months back in cricket season and theyre superb, didnt mark or damage my gloves either!
Title: Re: 46 Bats - but which ones to keep????
Post by: Watsontotty on December 12, 2009, 04:27:24 PM
100% that's why i love them ? when you spend as much money on pittards leather palms last thing you want is an abrasive grip. The gm is soft and subtle and gentle on the gloves but the bat don't twist in your hands like other grips, its best to get one and test it yourself though as with everything some people wont like them.

Id not use octopus grips on good quality gloves i did make that mistake once and it ripped my palm on my best worn in gloves. Guess that serves me right on using a mates bat.

Will start wwith the Screaming Cats!
The used Professional is on the left whilst the new Premium on the right.
The Professional looks a little '2 tone' as I have the blade refurbed on the blade only. So the main blade is done, but the rest is still darker coloured.
It doesn't bother me as both bats feel awesome!

Love the Aero grips mate! I use a normal grip under and the aero on top.
Dont use Aero gloves, but something to try in the future.

I may be trying the Xtrax grips soon, which are similar to Aeros, so am looking forward to that!

One of the guys at my club plays laods of cricket.  He plays Sat and Sunday, a few mid week day games for the XL teams and spends a month in the Winter abroad also playing cricket.  Perhaps one day when you retire and your able to play this much cricket you'll be bale to have even more bats due to playing more cricket!

Cant wait to see pics of the rest

Sorry about any delays.....but have been snowed under at work chaps!

Here are some more to be getting on with:
The Custom Bat LE I got from here, which seems like an excellent traditionally shaped bat - although I may bee tempted to change the stickers and change the grip!
Haven't used these bats before, so yet more bats to test out in the nets!!!!

The middle is obviously a B&S (South African make) which are great bats in my experience!

The third is a Lekka - asked them to not worry about the grains too much - just find me the most responsive bat. So will test that one out too!

They look like decent bats mate..you must have the patience of a saint and a sound proof room to be knocking in all these bats!!

CB stickers could do with a nice round sticker below in the arrow section with a number or something if they are limited edition looks a bit plain to me. Perhaps in white text! Leo get photoshopping!
Title: Re: 46 Bats - but which ones to keep????
Post by: Tom on December 17, 2009, 11:44:22 AM
I can't believe some why some companies just don't do the final touches the grips and grip tape on the CB and Lekka just look shoddy, makes the bats look very cheap.

are the CB bats meant to be £250? seems a high price for something reasonably unproven as yet, will be interested to see how it goes when it finally gets put to use...could be waiting a while with 45 otehr s to try out 1st!
Title: Re: 46 Bats - but which ones to keep????
Post by: petehosk on December 17, 2009, 11:48:23 AM
The CB bat is a really nice bat - nice trad shape, but the finish isn't the normal immaculate and faultless finish.
Maybe the grip should be better quality for an LE bat. Plus the stickers shhould have been either higher up to cover the splice of the bat, or the grip put on better. I just think the attention to detail should have been better when finishing the bat.
If these points had of been done better, then the bat would be perfect!

I woont complain about the Lekka yet, as I got the bat and the entire kit at a bargain price. But I will at least expect the bat to play wel!!

Is the handle a funny shape on the CB out of interest? I have 3 blank ones at home and the spine can be felt a way up the handle.

Didnt really notice!
But I only picked it up to feel what it felt like from a balance / feel point of view.
It felt nice, but hard to tell without using it properly. Will check it out over the weekend if I am not too busy visiting distant relatives and munching mince pies! ;)

Looks very much like a CA handle to me - i've had a fair few where you can feel a sharpish edge on the handle.

Possibly. But the profile is not CA one bit.
little edges and trad shaped.

I could probably do with taking some side profile shots some time!

Asian collection now.

The BAS is a Long Handle, whilst the other 2 are SH.
The other 2 are CA bats - the restickered is new, but not sure of the original model CA, as I purchased it off someone else already with those stickers!

Hi there

Not had it yet - ordered it direct from Pakistan a couple of weeks ago.
Am looking forward to trying it out though, as most people seem to reckon that they play well - even if there is occasionally a somewhat dodgy handle!

And I would need to seel my Asian bats, and a few others to purchase a Signature package, as they are £900 odd!
I have spoken to James about it. But the one thing that has stopped me from buying one, is that I want to be absolutely SURE what profile I would want!
If I am spending £900 on it, then I don't want to be changing my mind!!

Maybe that's one for the future???

I am not adverse to trying out new things, and the V3 is somethhing I have heard good things about.
And just have a gut feel that it'll be a nice bat!
But hey, maybe the signiture package next year?

So you didn't like the CA or BAS bat photos I added then?

Title: Re: 46 Bats - but which ones to keep????
Post by: petehosk on December 17, 2009, 11:51:10 PM
That bat was traded weeks and weeks ago mate.
Thinking of restickering the CA 8k plus (on the previous page.)
Have some lovely yellow slaz oz stickers - the CA bats are nice. In fact some of the Asian bats are very meaty and powerful.
But the only thing I have found with the Asian bats in general, is that they can make great bats, but need to work on their sticker designs!
I have only ever seen 1 or 2 Asian bats where I like the sticker designs!  :-\

Ok and now for the Kookaburra bats!
From left - Itias G1 labelled with plain kooky stickers
Middle is long blade mayhem with loads of grains.
And on the right is Angry Beast recently refurbed, as it have some horrid tape all over it. Considering I wanted the labels left on, and all the rubbish tape taken off, then well done Hit4six - great job you made!!  ;D

And on the left is a bbeautiful Bradbury custom bat - feels amazing and pings superbly with the mallet!
In the middle is Puma Evo 5000 (love the stickers) purchased from Kitbag - they got the order wrong (there's a surprise!) so I am waiting for the 6000s to comme back into stock and they will swap it - that'll be January! They did the same with the 2 pairs if RP batting gloves I ordered! They sent my LH Mayhem gloves, so they will swap them when they get new stock in January! They only made 3 mistakes with my order!  >:(
Anyway, on the right is Salix Praestantia Performance - has been refurbed once by Salix. Great piece of willow!!

Good thinking pete, the items stay up on website for a while even though they are out of stock on kitbag, so if you order they send you something different, then you get new ones of the correct ones at low prices when they come in stock. Genius!!

Title: Re: 46 Bats - but which ones to keep????

The trick is to actually speak to them - which I've done several times already to ensure it's all noted in their system!
I ordered around £600 of stuff, so they were bound to get a few things wrong!  ::)
And cos it was a big order, they have already refunded a few quid for compensation!
I'm holding onto the 2 incorrect pairs of gloves and the bat, to make sure they don't lose track of anything.
Will just have to see if it works out for the good in January! :-\

And now Newbery GT335 Player bat on the left
In the middle is Newbery Custom - picked by Mike and purchased by someone on this firum. Feels like its gonna be an amazing bat!
And on the right is Purist restickered by GM with the nice Icon ones!

And on the left is a Hawk bat restickered - will change those after a refurb!
Then is the Puma Ballistic 5000, which will get a refurb and change stickers to Puma Ballistic Pink stickers
Next is the Charlie French stickered as Adidas, which feels like a really nice bat!
And lastly in thiese pics is the choice willow lionheart - feels good, but pretty sure it's become delaminated! So will send it to GM and see what the score is with it!

Ok - two Vantage bats on the left purchased from here - both very big and meaty beasts!
Then a GN Igisne PP
Plus an older very used Salix Praestantia - needed toe repair and refurb by Salix last year, but its holding up well!

Next is Bradbury Custom - it now has the proper Bradbury stickers so looks the business!
Then two Newbery GT335 SPS bats. Love those Cadbury labels!

Then there's my new Harlequin - well and truely knocked in and as much pinng as anything else I have!
And on the right is M&H Original with those nice stickers again!  ;D Well I like the stickers anyway!

Yep - the Itias feels like it can be used alll day without breaking a sweat. Feels nice.
And the M&H bats are always good!!

Last pics that I have taken coming now! And they are amongst the best bats tooo - with the SCs, Laver, and M&H!

On the left is my new Warsop Venom Pro - this one is lighter cleft as I wanted it a little ligter than 2lb 10oz (which is their normal minimum they do in the Pro model)
So I had to wait for a few weeks until they found the right piece of willow to use - am noot disappointed!  ;D
In the middle is my ping-master Redback!
And on the right belongs to the opening batsman in my team. He ordered this Venom Pro (2lb 10oz) bat but still needs to come and collect it, and pay for it too!!  ::)

I really like the Cadbury stickers too and the M&H Solution ones you have on the two bats.

Why do you prefer the Newbery GT over other models?
Title: Re: 46 Bats - but which ones to keep????
Post by: petehosk on December 19, 2009, 11:51:34 AM
I like the pick-up and feel of the GT bats.
But it's not so much that I prefer those particular bats - its just the way my purchases have worked out!
Although, to be honest, you really can't go too far wrong with Newbery bats!

Title: Re: 46 Bats - but which ones to keep????
Post by: petehosk on December 19, 2009, 03:17:56 PM
I usually take a bag of 5 or 6.
I would take a couple of lighter bats on case I open (if one of our openers isn't playing)
Plus a medium sized if I bat at normal position of 5 or 6.
And also a big bertha bat in case i go in with only 2 or 3 overs left to slog!!!
And also take a couple of bats if a couple of the colts are playing, who don't generally have a bat!

Will do!

The Scat Premium is not knocked in yet - but have been using the Scat Professional and it goes REALLY welll for its weight (2lb 8oz) - but I kind of expected the bat to be a gun, so hasnt let me down!
Tried the Redback in the nets last night! A few admiring comments from the guys waiting to bowl. And the bat played beautifully too! I think that (even though the Redback was pre knocked in) I will still need to knock the Redback in a little more - maybe a further hour or so should do the trick!
But the way the ball comes off the blade - like an absolute train!!!

Will get the camera out this week and grab some nice pics of both Screaming Cats for you chap

whats the laver paddle bat?

It's illegal - a bat which was a bit experimentational in concept!

And Dave - not really thought about selling the CE.
But will send you pics hopefully tomorrow fella!

The TT went in a trade - was a superb bat too!
And the GN Longbow is c6+ type handle. Two or three of the lavers are also carbo handles!

I am thinking long and hard about this!
There are a few which are semi-decent and which would make a decent net bat - so those few will be easy enough. But when I was going through the bats making a list yesterday, I realised just how lucky I am with the quality of most of these bats!  :D
But in way, it makes things harder to choose!!  :(

What's the Kahuna like?
I'm quite surprised there isn't a single Warsop in that list
Title: Re: 62 Bats - but which ones to keep????
Post by: petehosk on August 22, 2011, 04:34:45 PM
It's ok - wasn't that impressed but I am spoilt with what I have!
I did have a lovely Warsop but it got stolen by our best bat who took a liking to it!
I also had to order another for one of the openers! So I ordered another for me, but that got stolen too by our keeper!!!  >:( I gave up after that!!!!  ???

I haven't had a net with it yet, as the damn bowling machine was broken!! But from tapping it up it feels responsive and very nice - but I'd expect that from a quality maker like CF anyway!

Nice one Buzz , but i'm sure a return on a £5million new product will be achieved quicker than waiting for a phone to be answered that keeps ringing out or goes to a messaging service.Shame really as this new product would be right up Mikes alley just like all products he takes an interest in :)

It depends on which bat it is, there's a couple I'd love to have back in my hands.

Once I see the photos I'll let you know straight away.

There might be a possibilty next year that I might make a few. Probably unbranded or special editions - a couple of past buyers are asking for bats for nets next season.

I haven't read this thread fully but I'm shocked by how many bats you have! I take it you're single? :D just joking.

No seriously! I didn't think anyone could be that fanatical about bats. I take it you’ve totalled up what your collection is worth?

And you think 20 is a sensible amount?

Am i the only poor bugger on here with 3 bats? Mind you I’m an opening batsmen and I often find it difficult which bat to choose just from what I have...

I used to know a guy who would hide his bat under his shirt if started to drizzle (lol) and NEVER let anyone use it.

Don't get me wrong, I like to look after my bats but it takes some serious wedge to buy 100 bats and all of top quality as well! even if they were an average of £120 (probably too low) thats £1,200 worth of bats!! lol

But you know what, This Thread Is Worthless Without Pics :D

I was so shocked/ excited about posting my last response I left out a Zero.

But looking at the inventory, even the £20k seems conservative. Some very expensive, exclusive, classic bats in that collection. Most of which don’t even look like they’ve sniffed at leather before...?

Do you also/ still play? If so, how on earth do you choose your bat for the match???

Although Pete will be the first to say he is fortunate to own such a collection, he is modest enough to never be so brash as to discuss value and cost.

Do him the same courtesy and enjoy the collection for what it is, not what it is worth. :)

I see the cricket forum police are out in full force again...  :(

You’re making it seem like I’m trying to make petehosk feel guilty about his collection?! Pete if that’s the impression I’ve given YOU then please be assured that’s not my intention.

You have a truly amazing collection and my curiosity about its value is mostly rhetorical. I’ve never come across anyone with such an extensive collection and it is natural (for me at least) to wonder about its value. But that’s not all I’m curious about. I do appreciate you sharing it...
Title: Re: 62 Bats - but which ones to keep????

Its ok fella - I don't think they are having a go. Just merely not to raise the crude subject of money!
To be honest, I would never like to even begin to add it up as I'd go mad!!

Seriously yes - I do seem to have acquired a rather tasty cllection of bats. And every time I go through them there are so many top notch bats that I may open a bat museum!  ;)

I have been a bit 'lazy' with keeping the collection photographed over Summer, but my excuse is that I'll get more reviewed off season! I will be netting next week and will review at least 2 or 3 of the bats then. So photos and mini-reviews will start again!  8)
Title: Re: 62 Bats - but which ones to keep????

Okay, I'll leave that part of the conversation right there.

To say I'm envious would be an understatement but perhaps also releaved I don't have to try and pick one to play with. I find it difficult enough with what I've got :)

look forward to the reviews...

I'm afraid we live in a world where material value is more important to more people than ever before. No one was having a go at you, no 'forum police' as you claim. Pete has possibly the best collection of bats in the world and we are incredibly fortunate that he is couteous enough to share them with us. His generosity extends beyond pictures though, he has helped forum members out many times in many different ways.

No doubt Pete is in a fortunate position in life where he can afford such things, but he will have worked hard to buy every one. He could very easily hark on about how much they cost or how his collection is worth more than most people's cars, but he doesn't. Ever.

I think Pete and I come from an age where discussing money is considered a little vulgar. I'm guessing you are younger, so you consider it less so. But let us not cloud the issue. Enjoy the collection, dream and aspire to be able to have a collection of your own one day. :)
Title: Re: 62 Bats - but which ones to keep????
Post by: EaglesCC on September 15, 2011, 09:51:39 PM
Neither Petes generosity nor the means to afford this collection was ever in question.
I get the feeling too much has been read into a simple and innocent question.

But one thing we’re all agreed on. Let’s move on!

Like I said, you're a better man than me for being able to choose from those. I'd spend all season arranging which bat I'll use for which game. haha.. sad I know.  :D

Hello Pete,

I noticed on ebay you have your puma iridium 6000 gtr on sale from your huge collection. It's supposed to be a quality bat and one I always wanted in my tiny collection but can I ask how old it is, where you got it from (if you can remember) and how it compares to something like a h4l. I have a 666 with Hattori stickers which I bought off maverick last year and it's my favourite bat but am wondering if a branded puma bat can compare in terms of aesthetics and performance. Thank you...
Title: Re: 62 Bats - but which ones to keep????
Post by: petehosk on May 05, 2013, 08:28:50 PM
Yep - 6000GTR and plays beautifully.
I think it was 2010...and can't remember where I purchased it!
These bats do play extremely well - has a superb sweet spot too!!
I have a stonker of a H4L Hattori and the H4L is a better 'pinger' but the Puma is such a great touch players bat! Time it and it goes like a train!
It's hard to say, as a bat is a very personal and individual thing really, but I did question myself several times whether I should sell it or not, but I am trying to be ruthless and finally sell a few! So it had to go.  :(

Ok.. in one way I wish I'd kept my big mouth trap shut regarding the Puma as lost out on ebay due to being outside when the auction finished (was doing lunchtime activities with the kids at school) absolutely gutted and someone definitely has a bargain at 138 quid!!!

On the other hand it hopefully brought in a few extra quid for pete.... so what to do now??...Had a look at your list of 60 others or so and there are some delights but what will you decide to sell next and when???

Have a 2'10 talisman perfect storm which I'm 99% sure was a TK one before he started using Larsons - So I'm thinking of that as it taps up beautifully plus it's a bit of a looker!!
But have a long blade kookaburra rogue and a long handle BAS which I'll never use, so may list them too! Have an SS on there which ends in a day or two but that's 2'12 so slightly heavier, but a very nice bat!
