Duncan Fearnley Was Iconic And One Of The Most Sort After Major Brands To Have Along With Gray Nicolls In The 1970s & 1980s With Such Legends Of The Game As Ian Botham, Viv Richards, Alan Border, Graeme Pollack In Their Stable. But Unlike Gray Nicolls, Duncan Fearnley Seems To Have Been Either Neglected, Forgotten About Or Left Behind In The Modern Game. Duncan Fearnley Got It Right Several Years Ago When They Re Introduced The Retro Range With The Magnum, Attack 5 Star Range Especially After The Rather Dismal Designs Of The 90s And Early 2000s. But Where Are They Now, Forgotten? Ignored? Or Maybe Just Behind The Times In A Very Demanding And Competitive Modern Market.

Well i dont know - but ATM they have a 3 for 2's price on the website.. Ergo 3 pcs fourstar for 150 (sorry 300) pounds :o
http://www.fearnleycricket.co.uk/3-for-2-May/ (http://www.fearnleycricket.co.uk/3-for-2-May/)
-
it is 3 for 2 hence the four star grade is £300 for 3.
-
I think think things changed when the company moved from its small Batmaking unit to its current site and incorporated clothing and other kit etc moving towards selling club kits and clothing to the public. Playing around Worcester you still see plenty DF bats being used.
Also you can get a bat made to your specs from £200.00 and observe t being made.
For anyone interested in Batmaking or an educational schools etc visit the bat making tour is worth underitaking but you need to ring first and make an appointment.
-
I had a DF as my very first bat. I do like the look of the retro range and they seem ok value however I have never seen one being used for the last 15 years or so.
-
Would love to have one of these but worried a bit about the quality
-
I loved df bats, I didn't know they were still available and possible to have the bat making experience
-
My favourite brand ever and i mean ever both in terms of design and my hero using them
-
Who Knows, That Magnum Does Look Quite Tasty Though!
-
I was tempted last year by the Attack 5* and during the sale at £150 I thought it was worth trying. The profile has a lot of concaving which is a bit too much for my preference. I like the look of the retro stickers and the performance has been decent if not spectacular from mine. Tend to get comments from the opposition as most people have not seen one for years. I have been using my wet weather bat so far this season and that has been going well so likely to stay in the bag until I play badly and need to blame my equipment
-
This is a question only Fearnley management can answer. Owning one was a dream during my school and college days but by the time I could afford one, the brand had almost vanished from the market. When I asked a local dealer who used to sell DF they told me that nobody wants these anymore. I bought a Fearnley 5* when they started marketing the retro range again a few years back. Was quite surprised to see that the concaving on one side the spine was a lot deeper than on the other side.
-
^ completely agree. Starting playing in the mid-80s, a magnum was completely unattainable, though I do remember a school mate having a low-end attack that was way too heavy for 12 year old kids! I have a pair of the DF magnum green double finger gloves that sit in my study along with a couple of vintage bats. It's such a shame that the DF brand, which was so iconic in English cricket, has fallen from grace. The magnum in this thread looks great, but I don't think I'd ever buy one (unless there's some upcoming stonking reviews!)
-
I had a DF in the late 70's when they were one of the most sort after bats in SA with Graeme Pollock promoting them.
The guy I bought it from was 10 years older than me a cop and then borrowed and I never saw him or my bat again the b@st@rd.. but incredible middle and pickup.
-
Maybe no longer sponsoring test stars on the world stage did the brand no favours particularly the English ones Botham Hick etc
-
I remember owning either attack or colt in my younger years.i loved it pretending I was beefy. That magnum in the pictures looks beautiful. Surely I can't justify another bat though... .
-
That's brought it back! The DF Colt was my first 'proper' bat!
-
Lets hope for a detailed review.. Magnum caught my eye.
-
ian botham attack was my first ever bat as a kid
playing local to worcester everyone had magnums back in the day, clubmate took the plunge and bought a retro magnum......goes well
-
Playing in the Worcester league you still see new Fearnley bats being used.

Back in the early 1980's in NZ Glenn Turner used DF bats, in particular the Magnum. There is a video of him scoring 140 in an ODI with it, back when centuries were quite rare in one dayers. Apparently his bat weighed over 3lbs.
https://m.youtube.com/watch?autoplay=1&v=MkJE0hiFXdc
Martin Crowe used Magnums exclusively during the mid 80's and they became very well known and popular.
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=JcCSWlzF9n0
They were expensive and it was mostly the rich kids that had them. They were also the first bats I recall seeing with thick square edges. I had a friend that had a 'cleanskin' Magnum and who only used it a handful of times then left it sitting in the cupboard until I pursuaded him to sell it to me. It was used in the nets a lot and ended up getting thrashed around a bit.
As for the DF Attack. I had another mate who had one back in 1984. They were more common with youngsters in my cricketing circles and appeared to be marketed more toward the youth market and a more affordable option to the junior cricketer in comparison to the Magnum. When the England team toured NZ in 83/84 in remember Bob Willis using one!!!!!

I loved the Arcass gloves and pads that Glenn Turner was using.
I think there was even a special Glenn Turner model in the DF range; the GT1000 to celebrate his 1,000 first class runs before the end of May in 1973.
Also, to a large extent, Glenn Turner was one of the main reasons Duncan Fearnley developed his bat making business; Fearnley lost his place in the Worcestershire side to Turner in the late 1960s giving the time and motivation to concentrate on his bat making business.

I've probably seen 2 or 3 this season to be honest, which I should add is a great shame as I grew up using Fearnley for all my childhood. Personally I think they've just completely lost their way when it comes to the branding, the softs especially.

Looks really nice!
-
Love(d) the Duncan Fearnley stickers, then and now
-
Definitely liking the retro look. But some reason I've never bought one maybe due to not seeing them being used
-
The old ones where the best sticker ever made in my eye and the bats as good as anything maybe a trip down there for me to rejuvanant my love of the brand
-
Been down the in laws this week watching a bit of cricket so I always pop in to Fernley and this there 2017 bat range. I rather like the shape of the Atom!
-
They look nice!
-
All shapes are very much a like but Iam sure they can make what you want good to see them making again
-
Think I need to get one of these!
-
They look pretty good! Bit of tactical excess sticker removing and they'd look even better, original Fearnley stickers were possibly the best ever applied to a bat.
-
They look really nice. I bet with just one big name sponsorship they could easily take off again
-
Oh bollox! I am unexpectedly liking these. I'm also liking the Magnum shape in the previous post too! What's happening to me??????
-
I really like the look of the black ones (the 5 star?).
Might tempt me...
-
When/where will these be available??
-
This is direct from fearnley about the new bats
We have 3 models: Heritage, Sabre and Atom 6.0. Each model is available in 5* Ultimate, 5* Test & 5* Pro and they are all made here. The prices respectively for adult sized bats are £400, £300 and £200
-
Thanks! Did they say when they'll be out?
-
I think your can see and buy them now. But I'm not 100% sure on that sorry mate
-
They are for sale now as yo can see that's were I got the pics from

Glenn Turner had a bat named after him called the GT1000. It was so called be scored 1000 first-class runs before the end of May in one English season (1979, possibly?). This bat pre-dated the Magnum, but didn't feature in the DF range for very long after.
-
Nipped into Fearnley today, gladly the bats are looking substantially better than the last few years and this is certainly pleasing for a born and bred Worcester lad!
Pricing still needs to be looked at, but on the right track at least - can't see anyone forking out £400 for one yet that's for sure

Glenn Turner one of of two players to score 1000 runs before the end of May 1973 followed by Hick who did it in 1988 with a Magnum

It took longer for manufacturers to introduce new models in those days? GT1000 was my second ever bat. I soon wished it was a Magnum. Spoilt brat!

Seem to remember that the guy behind Solitaire used to work for Fearnley but left because he didn't agree with the volume of bats they imported from India?
Not sure if that's changed in the last few years or so.
-
They look like really nice pieces of willow. Look like a decent profile as well.

Bat making went to India but now It's back at Worcs

All of it or just the top end stuff?

All of it or just the top end stuff?
Good point as far as I am aware it was the DF top end bats that were being made in India and the lower end in Worcs that is apart from Custom mades.
-
I'm Glad They Are Producing Bats Back In The United Kingdom. Great Traditional Brand :)
-
Never used a senior bat, junior bats have always gone well.
Bought a few things in their sale, windproof jacket and a waterproof jacket for under a tenner ! cant go wrong!
-
They look pretty solid, anyone got a new fernley? If so, any good?
-
Just spotted the new Fearnley bags have been put up for pre-order. Just the £100 for a wheelie duffle... I really had high hopes for the new range :(
https://www.fearnleycricket.co.uk/listings/22878-heritage-pro-duffle-bag.html (https://www.fearnleycricket.co.uk/listings/22878-heritage-pro-duffle-bag.html)
-
How much?????
Does it include the bat?
-
Wow - how do they justify the price?
The brand has been dormant for so long (or making umpires/schools kit) and then kappow three times the price you might expect
-
My view is that they need more money - and its handled in the wrong way of increasing prices.
It needs a Re-Brand and major overhaul.
-
In order to re-establish itself it will need to have pricing come in around about market average, maybe even slightly under as most younger players these days won't remember their prominence back in the day. Hope they get back to where they should be.
-
Watch out for heavy discounts to that market average, making them look great value.

Still my favourite brand ever....
-
Going back a looong time
I’d had two fantastic fearnley bats and needed another due to mine snapping in half,(I wouldn’t even consider another bat)
Walked into one of many sports shops that used to be in Burnley, and asked if they had any DF bats,,the lovely chap politely told me ‘nah, we don’t sell them here, maybe try the chip shop next door, but we have a nice selection of gray Nicolls that you are welcome to look through)
-
Still my favourite brand ever....
Mine too Dave. They were certainly the brand to have in the 80’s. Being in Somerset with Botham using them and then when Viv started using them as well it was amazing. Had many a magnum myself and the Chris broad magnum pads. Loved it. Thought I was Alan Border 😀
-
Magnum pads oh the days..
-
I had the leather buckskin first and then when the magnum pads came out had to have them. Think I had matching magnum gloves as well. Before that it was the double finger protection ones with the big green finger protection
-
Have been waiting for the Heritage softs to arrive on the site, plus the duffle and just seen the prices !!!
They are clowns, gear seems half decent now and what an opportunity to re-establish the brand, but no,lets pretend we`re Gray Nicolls and are Premier brand all over again
Opportunity wasted

The padding on the inside of the pads looks very basic and the velcro strap on the gloves looks interesting, I wonder if that's a mistake or whether they did any research in to the placement of the velcro tab.

Loved this style of glove
