If a new retailer was to set up tomorrow what brands would they need to stock, backed up with a reason you would want that product in the range. The retailer could only stock products from 12 brands and all would have to be off the shelf products from existing brands worldwide. The companies finished list would have to cover every aspect of kit from shoes and socks to helmets.

Would this be cricket specific retailer and not general sports?
-
Why not have something a little different to what is already out there in as much as perhaps a UK only retailer...if that's possible....play on the patriotism of people in buying British.
-
assuming cricket specific (but a very valid point)
1, Redback – quality bats sell themselves
2, Screaming Cat – as above
3, Masuri (everyone needs a good lid – with all deference to Ayrtek)
4, Asics – everyone needs the best shoes
5, Aero (their thigh pads are the best value bulk made product on the market) and their bags are pretty good too
6. Kookaburra – I think their softs are largely pretty good and cover most tastes and price ranges they do balls plus scorebooks too
7, Newberry – excellent all round equipment
8, Horizon - everyone needs socks!
9. Vulcan jockstraps - you need to protect the crown jewels and these are pretty comfy...
The remainder would be changed on a season by season based on what is going to be popular with the kids to ensure you made you margin.. is that a bit of a cop out?
this year I would go for Mongoose, Adidas/Puma (same company?) and SS
no idea who can provide the stumps!
-
1: Millichamp and Hall, pure quality cricket equipment, especially the tan leather softs this year! I have used some of the bats, and the performance is excellent. Some of the shapes they make, especially the distinction look really good.
2: Gunn and Moore, excellent looking stickers and the bats perform well. The softs look professional and decent. The Icon and the Hero look really nice in real life, and the profiles are usually big for the weight.
3: Redback, excellent quality products, the bats and softs look immense! The name redback now has its own reputation in the cricketing world, and I think that most shops would be lucky to stock these bats.
4: SS, simply because I think they are the best bats in the world in my opinion. The stickers are instantly recognisable and the TON stamps are worldwide renowned. I think the gloves and pads look good, and the bats are pressed to perfection
5: Salix, a pure quality company in my opinion, everything looks professional. The bats maybe slightly over priced but you pay for quality I guess.
6: Newbery, a range of high quality bats and shapes, softs look really good with the camo in my opinion. The bats I have seen in a shop near me are of excellent quality, and the ping seems brilliant.
7: Impala, nowhere in the UK stocks them (that I know of) and a load of people rave about them in Australia. Some of them I have seen are lovely looking bats, but they are rare in the UK. Stocking them could be a brilliant business opportunity.
8: Hawk, another custom made UK brand, and I think the brand is underadvertised. The bats are pressed differently to most brands, however, the stickers look good and I think they would be a good asset to a retailer.
9: Laver and Wood, the name speaks for itself really, and I think these would sell well in the UK. I havent really seen the soft goods from Laver and Wood, but the bats like the Private Bin and possibly the reserve could well be a good asset to a retailer?!
10: Adidas, alot of my friends wish there was a place in my area that stocks Adidas gear, because they are interested. Ok, made in india and sold of ridiculous prices, but its amazing what the likes of tendulkar and kp can do for a brand!
11: Mongoose because they are the brand everyone is talking about! Again, havent seen the goods, but the bats seem to be of a decent quality. The CoR bat looks good, but the MMi still hasnt made me want to use one!
12: Talisman bats!!!
I would also try and get screaming cat bats! :)
I hope this helps mate!
-
A good start, I wonder if the list will favour niches brands or big cover it all ones, Remfry, Masuri, Ayrtek, Horizon v GN, GM, Kookaburra???
Which shoes would you use on your list Craig?
-
I have never been one for shoes. I just buy the bog standard ones, and I am mainly a batsman, who will have an over now and then if we have the opposition 9 down. I have found GM shoes comfortable, and apparently Asics and Nikes are nice.
I would say Kookaburra, Asics, Puma and GM shoes if i had to choose!
When it comes to helmets, I would pick Albion, Masuri and Ayrtek as I think no other companies have anything different in the helmet market
Another company that could be looked into is Aero. The strippers, pads and gloves are .... lets say modern, and I am guessing the bats must be available?
-
For me it would totally depend on the market you're aiming for, for online only is it worth stocking the likes of Kookaburra etc as you'll get into a price war and make very low margins when you could be the first to stock Remfry or a small Australian firm. But for a high street store big name brands are pretty much a must in order to bring people to the store.
Assuming my main market was a physical high street shop
1. Nike (Would be good to have Nike logo and brand associated with the store)
2. Mongoose (Amount of interest and walk in trade the MMi can generate is huge)
3. Adidas (As Nike)
4. Aero (Now widely seen as the best mainstream thigh pads on the market)
5. Kookaburra (Ashes winter, almost all Aussies use these)
6. Asics (Best spikes, used by pros)
7. Masuri (Most widely used helmet again, with Jnrs the main market for helmets pros using these is v important)
8. Gunn & Moore (Stuart Broad will sell you bats)
9. Gray Nics (V recognisable name in cricket)
10. SS (IPL coming up, cheap prices, used by loads of Indians)
11. Reebok (Not widely available in UK, could be popular and worth a punt especially with the Yuvi bats)
12. Salix (Something quality for the cricketing connoisseur who comes in, between these and Newbery. But Salix win on POS and PR.)
-
From a predictable point of view, I would think something like below:
1. Adidas
2. Nike
3. SS
4. Newbery
5. Gunn & Moore
6. Gray Nicolls
7. Kookaburra
8. Puma
9. Slazenger
10. Hunt County
11. Asics
12. Albion
But I think I would go for:
1. Screaming Cat
2. Laver & Wood
3. Redback
4. Newbery
5. Millichamp & Hall
6. Gunn & Moore (Have to have 1 or 2 larger popular brands)
7. Gray Nicolls
8. SS
9. Kookaburra (as Aussie gear has its following, plus wicket keeping gear!)
10. Salix
11. Mongoose
12. Fusion (as they do more than just bat and pads!)
And if any brand was not sellling, I would instead scrap that brand and change that 1 brand each year, depending on what's popular!!
-
1. Newbery - bats and soft goods and some bags
2. Salix - bats and some soft goods and a few bags
3. Millichamp & Hall - bats
4. Puma - will keep these as their products have a higher top of the mind recall and most walk-in customers inquire about their product. Bats (mostly junior), gloves, pads, clothing (??) and shoes
5. Kookaburra - will keep these as their products have a higher top of the mind recall and most walk-in customers inquire about their product. Junior bats, soft goods, bags, clothing and shoes
6. GM - again high recall especially due to the success they had last year with the new DMX range. Though will keep only bats as the soft goods are not very high quality in terms of finishing. Bats, bags and shoes
7. SS - very good quality bats and soft goods and the pricing appeals to the majority of the market.
7. Asics - probably the best shoes around
8. Nike - shoes could be this year's big sellers (even at those high prices). Clothing is very nice too.
9. Aero - Bags, jocks, ab guards and strippers - very good products
10. Readers - cricket balls
11. Masuri & Ayrtek helments
12. Misc. clothing ans accessories from various barnds.
May drop one of the big brands for Redback bats though....
Also the brands to be stocked would depend on the min order value as it is over £5000 for brands like Kookaburra, Puma and Adidas
-
Similar to Tom
but I would take out Mongoose, Reebok and Nike [not sure they're in the market yet]
That should leave some space for Newbery and have a What's hot wall put in:
Mongoose, Warsop, Talisman, Black Cat etc etc
edit: I see Nike might be, add them to my whats hot wall
-
1. Gunn and Moore - Their bats are very good, I'd say the best out of the big 4 (Slazenger, Kookaburra, GM & Gray Nicolls). Their softs are very good from my experience too.
2. Puma - Spikes are pretty decent and I think their bats look good, also their softs are apparently good.
3. Ayrtek - Safest helmet on the market and if the traditional helmet gets going then they appeal to a wider market. Also softs and bats are nice.
4. SS - Their bats are very good value for money and I think they're an improving brand in terms of cosmetics. Softs are also good.
5. BAS - Again, good bats and softs.
6. Aero - Apparently their strippers are the best around, so I'd have them for that reason.
7. Mongoose - Because they offer something different and their equipment looks decent.
8. Kookaburra - Their softs are very good, also accessories are very good i.e. protection and grips etc...
9. Asics - Best spikes on the market according to many people.
10. Redback - Bats are very good.
11. Newbery - Nice bats and softs. Good value for money?
12. Slazenger - Appeals to a younger market for kids starting cricket, also good if you're working on a budget. Clothing is good too.
Wanted to fit in Hunts County somewhere....
-
Norb, I am not sure if Warsop will give bats for stocking in shops as they work directly with clients and also their final selling prices are same or lover than the trade prices of most big brands.....
-

I'm sure Talisman could wangle it
-
as Kookaburra own Readers you can add in the redback yvk...! (on a technicality)
-
as Kookaburra own Readers you can add in the redback yvk...! (on a technicality)
The orders go independently for both the brands...
I would be inclined to drop GM and put Redback in....
-
Going back to the location of the retailer - if it is going to be a large physical store, you need to look at your sphere of influence (lets say up to an hour's drive for most customers) and consider you likely customers. If there was a large asian community you would need to have a leaning to that type of equipment, however if you are based in an area full of stock-brokers, lawyers and bankers with overflowing wallets you can go for the kind of "status" product they will pay for.
-
Hit4Six, any luck with that list you said you'd do for meee! :)
-
No location, for the purpose of this thread the store is at the end of your road and would stock every product made by your brand choice.
Yash was the first person to spot you will need to think about balls.
-
I'd go for
1. Newbery - Bats, Softs
2. Mongoose - Bats
3. Kookaburra - Bats but for me mainly softs
3. Puma - Softs more than the bats
4. Adidas - All around but there for the spikes for me
5. Aero - Thigh Guards, Box
6. Warsop - Bats
7. Laver and Wood - Bats
8. Ayrtek - Best helmets going :)
9. Bradbury - Love the bats and softs
10. Nike - Spikes and whites and baselayers, up and coming imo
11. SS - Just generally a great brand all around! Dont they do balls??
12. Salix - Love the bats and softs, bit pricey hence why its number 12!
-
I would be inclined to drop GM and put Redback in....
Good in theory as Redbacks are just so good but in practice I think you would sell less bats as a result.
-
1. millichamp and hall- bats
2. bradbury- softs, clothing
3. aero- bags, strippers
4. adidas- shoes
5. gunn and moore- bats, softs
6. masuri- helmets
7. redback- bats, softs
8. newbery- pretty much all their stuff!
9. warsop- bats

9. warsop- bats
10. readers- balls
11. hell 4 leather -softs
-
1. Newbery-Argueably press their bats the best in the world so cant go wrong in the bat department. Also do a very nice range of soft goods.
2. Aero-Something for the more modern cricketer, do a range of thigh pads and bags that are top quality.
3. Warsop-Simply fabulous prices for such quality gear and bats. Once again another brand that handmakes in the UK. Provide a range from bats to soft goods and protection
4. Redback-Pretty much as the above, quality gear.
5. Masuri-Having used their helmets, they one of the best. Solid Protection
6. Asics-Great comfy footwear as used by pros. The best footwear in my eyes...
7. Readers-Would provide match balls for local clubs etc.
8. Canterbury-Light and comfy matchwear and under skins.
9. Oakley and sunwise eyewear-Every cricketer has got to have a pair! its a must! ;)
10. Mongoose-Talked about lots, appeal lots to young cricketers and someone who likes to look a bit more modern. Similar to the aero post.
11. Nixon cricket-make great bats (have used) and again are another UK hand made brand.
12. SS-something different to the other brands, but still in my eyes, great prices for such quality gear.
-

1. Newbery - Bats, Softs
2. Mongoose - Bats
3. Kookaburra - Bats but for me mainly softs
3. Puma - Softs more than the bats
4. Adidas - All around but there for the spikes for me
5. Aero - Thigh Guards, Box

I'd take mongoose, kook and bradbury out and put in Redback, Blank Bats and GM
-

SAF
SG - First official UK outlet/supplier?
I'd say these 11 plus
Willostix - Love the bats and softs, Good value, judging from itsjustcricket's webby

8 years on, how would people stock a new shop?
-
1. New Ballance. Kids buy it in droves cos of root, covers shoes to.
2. Matsuri, probably still the most popular helmet.
3. Kook, as do everything including balls, and currently like there range.
4. Gray nics as do everything. Including training aids.
5. GM as still popular.
6. H4l, as I’m a fan of there bats, and would push them for custom made stuff.
7. Ayrtek, helmet, boxes, and current range of sorts and bats means a left field option.
8.ss/Ton as I’d like to offer atleast one Indian brand on my shelf’s.
9, keeley cricket, why have a sticker brand he makes for when you can rock keeley itself?
10. Adidas, for shoes and clothing range, maybe even a club shop that reliable does Adidas gear.
11. Duke, get a quality selection of balls on the shelf.
12. Strettom Fox. Just because.

3. Kookaburra
4. NB
5. Ton
6. Adidas
7. Masuri
8. Ayrtek
9. Aero
10. Chase, H4L or another - basically one of the elite medium-sized/boutique brands.
11. Surridge clothing (and a screen printing/embroidery set-up!)
12. Be rude not to include myself :D
-
@Neon Cricket I think you have wasted a slot on surridge as many of your other brands already have clothes.
Maybe Hunts?
-
Very true, of all the brands I could actually forget ;)
Gray Nics & Adidas stash are both very decent so swapping out Surridge for Hunts would make perfect sense
-
My selection...
1 GN
2 GM
3 Adidas
4 Kookaburra
5 Masuri
6 New Balance
7 Ton
8 SG
9 Aero
10 Blank Bats/Keeley Cricket

8 years on, how would people stock a new shop?
01. New Balance - they're the popular brand at the moment. Shoes are very nice too.
02. Gray Nicolls - well known name that sells itself. They do everything including lids, shoes & clothing
03. Gunn & Moore - well known name that sells itself. They do everything including lids, shoes & clothing
04. Kookaburra - well known name that sells itself. They do everything including lids, shoes & clothing
05. SS/TON - Competitive pricing and popular from the amount you see being used
06. Masuri - If a retailer didn't stock them would they be taken seriously?
07. Adidas - gear looks good this year and the ones I've seen always seem to ping
08. Neon - Lush softs and every shop should stock some pink bats
09. Aero - probably the most popular thigh guards and boxes currently sold I'd guess?
10. CA - Likely to sell well I'd think
11. Chase - my local maker so would be rude not to.
12. Hunts - they do everything and I have a bit of a soft spot for them
-

2) GN
3) GM
4) Kook there is a reason these 3 dominate the market each year so must be stocked plus there gear is always decent
5) Masuri
6) Hunts county more for the whites, accessories than the kit which outside if Suffolk isn't favoured really in my opinion
7) New Balance covers the kit and shoes market well
8) aero strippers and bags
9) H4L top kit
10) horizon love the socks and must have decent socks
11) Vulcan bats and softs are great
12) Garrad & Flack to support local business

Saw the thread read the first page to catch up and thought mongoose the brand everyone is talking about ok have I missed something. But it was the Talisman mention that me double check the date! Interesting how some have stood the test and others have wilted. Or brands were opinions on them have changed both positively and negatively.
-
- GM - Do everything
- GN - Do Everything
- Kook - Do Everything
- Hunts - Do Everything
- JEDi - Bats
- Salix - Bats and Softs
- Warsop - Bats
- Masuri/Shrey - Must have helmet companies
- Readers/Dukes - Must have ball companies
- SS/TON/BAS - Bats and Softs
- CA/MB Malik/AM - Bats only

This is exactly why I resurrected the thread.
Also, have softs changed much in the last 10 years?

Are we choosing based on kid badger preferences or are we looking at making as much money as possible?
-
1) GN
2) GM
3) Kookaburra
4) Aero
5) Masuri
6) New Balance
7) Adidas (mainly for whites and trianing kit )
8) RPC
9) Salix
10) unbranded plain gloves and pads
11) duke (balls)
12) Canterbury (mainly for training kit )
Basically all of it can be sold online, aiming at volume rather than margins to get the name as the go to place.
Unbranded for the casual player who simply doesn’t want to spend the high prices in modern Cricket
You need the big guns as most casual players and kids only know these. Then the rest are the best in their field

Saw the thread read the first page to catch up and thought mongoose the brand everyone is talking about ok have I missed something. But it was the Talisman mention that me double check the date! Interesting how some have stood the test and others have wilted. Or brands were opinions on them have changed both positively and negatively.
It's very interesting to see the how much the trend has changed in the last few years, and how many of the early posters are no longer posting (for whatever reason).
There is a definite wave of preference that goes from company to company.
At the moment I would have...
1 - GM
2 - GN (GM and GN will alwasy have a spot in the UK market, unless something major happens like it did with Slazenger)
3 - NB (big now, but will see about longevity)
4 - Asics (for their footwear)
5 - Salix
6 - Newbery (Salix and Newbery provide very good bats and have that 'boutique' feel)
7 - Masuri (for their lids)
8 - Adidas (excellent clothing range)
9 - H4L
10 - Blank Bats (the performance of the BB and H4L bats I have seen have been top notch)
I'd also want a "custom" bat maker, someone who could provide the custom option, such as Red Ink or similar.
The other option would be Kippax to add to my range, but they are quite expensive.
There would be a spot for anyone else local who wanted to sell their bats (Kelsall or mangled, etc.) if they were producing many.

Aldred
Keeley
Salix
H4l
Rob pack
Hunts
Jedi
Chase
Charlie French
Etc etc
I’d have a small workshop where customers could have a go and have batmaker open days, meet the batmaker
Leave the mainstream to sports direct etc
