As there isn't yet a topic...
Round 2. The farcical ECB relationship with the CC continues, with Anderson and Broad resting(!) along with Mahmood, Overton and Leach starting their season late and Crawley batting at 3. Wouldn't it be nice if it was taken seriously!
-
Personally, in the long term I see Crawley at three so I’m not totally opposed to that. The rest of them having a rest is a bit strange though.
Good starts for the batsmen, I wonder which few of the hundred scorers are going to have a sniff at the national squad.
-
Why shouldn't Kent bat him where they want to bat him? It would be 'not taking it seriously' if they didn't. It's a County Championship not a County England Warm--Up.
Forum favourites Virdi and Moriarty have started the season in Surrey 2s.
-
Has it come to that? You score a hundred in county cricket and you're in with a chance of an England call-up?

If you're scoring hundreds you're putting yourself in the discussion at least. I don't think he was suggesting every single batsman who got a ton should be called up...
Personally don't mind Crawley at 3 as I think he's really not an opener. Lees and another attritional batsman opening up would be my preference for the summer tests, Crawley 3, Root 4.

I thought that was what the general consensus was at the end of the West Indies tour, pick the people in form. If that is the case then anyone with a 100 in the first week should be at least under the microscope to see how they continue to get on in the early part of the season.
-
Is it any wonder people don't look ready for tne next level?
-
I also think Crawley will end up 3 and maybe Burns or Sibley come back in, or another name starting the season well.
Ollie Pope should not be 4 for Surrey, I know it’s only one batting position but if they want him to play for England he has got to move up.
-
Been a lovely day here at the Oval, but bizarre that Vince elected to bowl on a flat one. There's nothing from this Pope innings that we don't already know...
-
Gutted to have missed it due to Covid.

That and I am not sure he holds the bat right with his top hand.

Hilarious if Essex lose this
-
People will be delighted that Tom Abell got a hundred today.
-
The Bell-Drummond one may be of more significance. Quite likely to be a Rob Key favourite?

Well Crawley is doing his best to get dropped. Walking down the wicket in the 4th over and nicking to the keeper. Just no temperament as an opening bat at the moment in red ball. And yes I’m a massive Kent fan so big easy to say.
DBD is a great white ball player for Kent but his red ball is not even in the top 100 I would say in Englands reckoning
-
So how well / how much cricket are the current England team playing?
Lees - Not playing
Crawley - Not scoring
Root - Not playing
Lawrence - Not scoring
Stokes - Not playing
Bairstow - Not playing
Foakes - Not scoring
Robinson - Not playing / injured
Overton - Not playing?
Leach - Not playing?
Mahmood - 1st game today?
Not exactly flooding the hopefuls with cricket - plus Broad not playing and Anderson wicketless at time of writing.
How much of a rest do these guys need? Get out there and get playing, there is a country's reputation to gwet started on!!!!!
-
What price:
Tom Abell
Dom Sibley 2.0
Dawid Malan
Toby Roland-Jones

What is it he’s doing wrong with his top hand? Can’t see the pictures too well on my phone
-
Alex Lees is injured. He scored a hundred in his last game.
Jack Leach is in Somerset team at the Oval. As is Craig Overton.
-

There aren't even 100 batsmen in county cricket!
-
I knew the love affair with Ben Foakes would be over once he was actually in the team. ;)
-
There are probably 85 'batsmen' in county cricket - I'm not sure England know who their top 8.5 are.
-
Ben Foakes: 132 not out and 45. 177 runs for once out. Not scoring!
-
Personally I'd make him captain
-
Lawrence is injured too.
-

Haha! We must be all inclusive and give everyone a chance. I’m excited about when Bairstow has his turn.

Who are we going to war with?
-
Who are we going to war with?
Suspect he'd make Kohli look quite calm and collected!
Of the guys who've been playing, Foakes Lees and Overton could hardly have done any more. Mahmood looked great yesterday against Glos. Few too many injuries around for comfort. Suggest you might want to watch a bit more county cricket Brucie!
-
In terms of players outside the squad meanwhile, Bracey has two hundreds already, one a daddy against a decent Yorkshire attack (albeit on a bit of a road), and Harry Brook has a ton and two fifties in three knocks. I also note than Henry Brookes is back bowling for Warwickshire and looking decent.
-
Bracey notably scoring runs at 3, not 7. Hopefully the ECB selectors wrap their heads around that little tidbit.

Does Bracey even keep for Gloucestershire?
-
Does Bracey even keep for Gloucestershire?
Think he has been keeping this season, but I'm sure they've played him as a pure batsman in the past.
-
Lawrence is injured too.
Is he? He's playing in current Essex match and played in the previous ones.
-
Sam Curran not bowling today. Obviously been restricted. Don't like.
-

To be fair he kept OK against us.
-
To be fair he kept OK against us.
He seems competent enough. Wouldn't select him for England as WK though, much rather see him given a top 3 spot. Bohannon is another one I wouldn't mind seeing given a chance.
Given Key has talked about separation of the red and white ball setups, I wouldn't hate it if we saw more of a divergence between red and white ball squads.
-
They've more or less diverged themselves really - Bairstow, Stokes and Wood are really our only three format players now, with Root and Woakes playing red and white ball.

Archer and Mahmood I would expect, if fit, to be involved in red and white ball also. Think Stone has played both too?
Not opposed to players playing multiple formats but you do wonder if picking players more naturally suited to red ball might be the way to go longer term.
-
So early impressions of this weeks matches -
Crawley doesn't seem to have scored a run this year has he?
Lees out cheaply
Broad got a bit pumped
Jimmy seems to have woken up.
Will be interesting to see how the day pans out.
-
I briefly forgot what to 'get pumped' meant.
-
You never forget what 'get pumped' meant if you've been 'pumped'
-
I sound like a broken record but Jamie Smith is the real deal. Everything just looks good.
Also nice to see SCurran showing what he's capable of with the bat when it comes to FC cricket, much more like it when he first came on the scene
-
Mark Stoneman yet again looking the best opener on the circuit
-
You never forget what 'get pumped' meant if you've been 'pumped'
Trust me, I've been pumped.
-
We're a bit light on 'change of sponsor' news this year, chaps?
-
@rickjames - what is it about Jamie Smith we need to take notice of?
By the way, with Ollie Robinson being a bit suspect on fitness - just sayin' how well Toby RoJo has started the season.
-
Ooooh! Mark Stoneman
-
After a brief flirtation with Newbery, it looks like Stoneman might be with WCW this year.
-
Luke Procter has also left Newbery, and is using CP.
-
@rickjames - what is it about Jamie Smith we need to take notice of?
2nd best young batsman in the country?
-
Saif Zaib has left H4L for GN.
-
(This will be balanced out by Buzz using H4L this season.)
-
Pujara went 52 red ball innings without a hundred, rocks up for Sussex and get 3 hundreds in 5 innings…
Perfectly in form to make us Aussies grovel in the upcoming test series…
Fudge!
-
Fudge
-
Can see Harry Brook getting a call-up.
-
Double-hundred for Chris Dent. Also using WCW. 'Grown and shaped in England', apparently.

I figured that. Probably handled too? I just thought it was 'interesting' marketing.

Ton for Alex Lees.

Yup I’ve been there to buy a bat and have the tour of the unit - impressive set up
-
Despite the cold April start and some serious bowling attacks floating around, it's been a good first month for top order bats in the CC! Haven't watched as much as I'd like, but the competition looks in pretty good health from what I have seen. Poor Zak Crawley can't be feeling brilliant right now though.
-
Sibley and Burns both made 100's today, Sibley still not out.
Both have remodelled their techniques a bit so will be interesting to see how they get on.
-
Really feel for Malan - jettisoned too soon, runs this season and suited to No,3
-
Was at Oval today and didn't notice Rory had re-modelled anything.
-
Scott Borthwick using B3.
-

Was last year too. The trouble is keeping that form when proper cricket stops?

Just watched some Sibley highlights. Looks miles better without all that pre ball strike routine. Looks balanced.
-
Sean Dickson who couldn’t get a game last season at Durham gets his third ton of the season averaging 80 so far. Worth noting that he alongside the other Durham batters are keeping Mr Stokes sitting padded up waiting patiently also!
-
Mr Stokes who this morning has helped himself to 58 off 50 balls as I type…
-
Stokes deciding to ton up by choosing absolute violence
-
34 run over sees him to a ton off 64 balls. Not a bad player.
-
Stokes is in the mood.
Sibley carrying his bat and Bracey duck in Div 1
-
Stokes is having a lot of fun.
-
Stokes at 6 is sounding quite good just now.
-
Stokes is a great number 6- always has been.
-
Stokes deciding to ton up by choosing absolute violence
Hahaha best way to describe it!
-
Josh Bohannon with Gunn & Moore now. Ricardo Vasconcelos with Gray-Nicolls.
Double-century for Keaton Jennings.
-
Interesting that Joe Denly's not getting a game for Kent?
-
Some players just look like they belong at the international stage.
Harry Brook is one of those.
101, 56*, 84, 77*, 194, 123, 41 and 82* - 151 average.
This kid should be making his Test debut against the Kiwis.
-
He is being tipped in the press for a possible call up. Other candidates,Bohannon,Livingstone,Clarke are either not scoring on still in the IPL.
We have a whole team of fast bowlers injured or not playing CC so the bowlers in County cricket perhaps could make a case for selection also
-

He’s been injured I think, pretty sure it was hamstring.
-

Saw his name on a 2s scorecard. Maybe coming back from injury?

Josh Bohannon scored a double-hundred a couple of weeks ago.
-
* And is averaging 60 this season.
-
What a win for Surrey today, County Championship at its absolute best
-
What a win for Surrey today, County Championship at its absolute best
Great game, though it'd be so much better if it were two first XIs, or at least close to.
-
Another depressing performance from us Kentish men- shambles of a batting collapse and season has been poor. Some tough questions for the coaching team and those responsible for player recruitment . Matt Henry may make a difference but a little too late in the season.
There’s always next year!
-
Some shockers in the county championship today. 26 wickets falling at Essex, 23 at Hampshire who despite being bowled out for 56 are still well in the game with Kent having a lead of 120 odd after only scoring 165 in there first innings and now being 20-3 in there second. Hampshire before today in pole position to win the championship with Surrey having a very tough game vs Yorkshire and Kent after a very poor Red ball season looked odds on to go down with the run in they have. In both games wickets falling to both spin and pace so can’t see how you could blame the wickets.
In other games Glamorgan 300+ for 3 with Lloyd on 200+ so a real mixed bag end of season
-
Wickets can be overly helpful for both seamers and spinners 🤨
-
Surrey having a very tough game vs Yorkshire
They're basically playing our twos. 🙄
Root unavailable, despite Pope and Foakes playing, Fisher and Bairstow injured and Malan, Brook, Willey and Rashid with England.
-

Not usually at the same time though

Glenn Chapple's interview afterwards.... lol.... he certainly thought it was the pitch!
He might not have been watching some of the shots from the batsman (on both teams). 3 wickets fell to batters leaving the ball and some ridiculously attacking shots including Croft's reverse sweep come forward defense!
It's no coincidence that Cook is currently top scoring.
Add to that some marginal LBW's that went the bowlers way and you have some mental collapses.
Yes the pitch isn't perfect but it's the end of the season, it's going to be a used wicket.
And Lancs won the toss and batted 1st!

You've never played in early season scotland :D

Dom Bess goes through some bat sponsors!

CHAMPIONS!

Feels massively devalued to me.
