The test match summer is back with the arrival of the Saffas who are about to spend the day chasing leather as Harry Brook and Will Jacks smash them everywhere (please don't jinx this, cough)
I think the test series will be pretty close. The SA team are stronger bowling than us, but our batting is better...
-
Have the Saffers got a reasonably strong squad? Depth always seems to be an issue for them.
-
I have been distracted by stocking up on Skips and popcorn. What is this "Test" you speak about?
-
I never see Ben Duckett get a mention or be considered in anyone's probable list but he does seem to be scoring in all formats. Strange!
-
Pouring beer on Jimmy Anderson hasn't done Duckett many favours.
-

Has he been given a crack at any of the Lions games? Saw that Lawrence got runs but haven't followed them that closely. Does seem strange if he's not even in the conversation when he seems so well suited to the philosophy they're trying to instil.
-
Just spotted that he's got 145 😂 although at 5 which is not really a problem spot right now. Lawrence run a ball 97 at 3 is encouraging though.
-
Lawrence has been a bit unlucky IMO they stuck with Bell….no Pope :) and it’s paid off at 3.
Duckett is having a good season runs for him this match plus Lawrence.
But as others have pointed out in here the one to watch is Harry Brook…where he could fit in would be the issue, there may only be Crawleys place available.
I’m a bit loathe to big up Brook but I saw some highlights today and he does have every shot in the book. He certainly has a bright future if he keeps up his form.
-
Brook looks the business.
-
I think one of the key ones in that Lions team is Jennings, with ultimately the most likely position available opening and the next tour to Pakistan, he has 2 test hundreds in Asia and runs in Div 1 this season.
Brook is a shoe in for that tour if not before.
-
Can someone please just put Crawley out of his misery, get him back to county cricket for an extended spell.
-
When will the penny drop that he's just not good enough
-
Such a shame with Crawley. He looks so good when in flow.
-

Mark Butcher offered one of the most excoriating summaries ever heard from a Sky commentator - describing it as a dereliction of the ECB's duty of care to keep picking him, amongst other things.
-
As good awful as Zak Crawley is, Ollie Pope ‘Surrey hype merchant’ is arguably worse.
After 50 innings in test cricket, he average a mediocre 30. Still can’t play spin.
But all is well he can brainlessly statpad at the Oval.
-
Crawley fits the new management style, has Key as head honcho and looks fabulous in full flow.
The obvious issue is he just does not get enough scores and that’s usually what you are judged on. The ECB have invested in him-pretty sure he is still contracted.
Plus there’s no one bashing the door door to get picked.
The only suggestion I can think of is Sibley to return if Zak missed the next game.
Personally I think he may get the whole series
-
Funny old game is cricket hey? Turns out blindly slogging isn’t really an option when there’s a big old chap winging it down at 150 clicks…
-
For all the talk before the start of the series, this is pretty poor, losing by an innings!
-
Imagine the opposition ‘only’ scoring 326 and still losing by an innings...
Harry Brook in and the hopeless Ben Foakes out. Bairstow back to keeper.
-
Fix the openers first, Crawley out for starters. Pope has probably earned a decent run at 3 with some useful fifties but needs to show grit on a consistent basis. No use having a gun middle order if they're facing the new ball every other game.
-
England need to sort out their bowling attack. When Ben Stokes on one leg is bowling quicker than the other three, it’s somewhat embarrassing.
Anderson is a one spell bowler.
Broad was rubbish and massaged his figures by getting two tailenders out.
Potts average.
If Robinson is fit he should be taking the new ball.
-
"If Robinson is fit" is a hell of an 'if'. Don't disagree though, he is absolutely quality when he's in the right shape to bowl.
I think Potts has plenty credit in the bank, just need to look at the wickets he's taken this summer to see he has the ability to get good players out.
It's a shame about all the injuries, Mahmood, Stone, Archer, JOverton would all be exciting seam bowling options.
-
I don’t think the bowling is that desperate to be radically changed.
SA top 6 only made 210 including a bloke getting 70. Rather lucky really.
Gave away 50-100 runs too many yes, but 326 in a test match is the minimum requirement really.
The England batting is just woeful. And it starts with the openers.
Everybody is having to do somebody else’s job. Whether it’s facing the new ball after 10 minutes or having to bowl a team out for 150. It’s too much pressure too often and they’re worn out mentally before they’ve even started.
I hope they use Pope as the tactic setting innings, stay in for an hour and just keep busy getting singles and the rest will gradually follow including the bowling changes.
(Sorry. Rant over)

Anyone would think pom bashing is a national pastime in Oz! 😂
Can't disagree with this performance tho, it was woeful.not sure this was 'Bazball' tho. It was England's problem which has been apparent for sometime, the inability to knuckle down in testing conditions against a very good attack. It wasn't slogging and getting out, it was just getting out!

Love kicking the Poms :D
Anyway joking aside.
It’s a relevant point
Slogging worked against New Zealand and India - because both side had decent attacks but lacked depth. Kiwis have two world class bowlers Boult and Jamieson. And the latter got injured. Southee and de Grandhomme are barely medium paced.
India’s fun bowlers are Bumrah and Shami. After than the drop off is substantial to the lesser seam bowlers.
South Africa’s attack has no such weakness. Rabada, Ngidi, Nortje, Jansen and Maharaj about as compete an attack as you can get.
-
there’s no one bashing the door down to get picked.
Or even playing any cricket.
-
Ben Compton
Daniel Bell-Drummond
Keaton Jennings
Haseeb Hameed
All openers as far as I’m aware, averaging above 50 in county championship. Any of those are more worthy than Rob Key’s son Zak Crawley.

Think Hameed could still use some time away from the England setup personally. They brought him back way too early last time round.
Compton looks worth a go but maybe not done it consistently enough yet.
Jennings is interesting given he's got international experience and has been in good nick.
DBD having a decent year, but IIRC he's perennially up and down.
-
Looks like so far Bazball came into play when Eng chased in 4th innings.. I could be wrong but have any of the previous 4 Eng victories come with Eng batting first?
-
Daniel Bell-Drummond bats at 3 for Kent.
-
I think Keet’s has to replace Crawley, pope has enough credit in the bag but needs to show some steel at times.
-
Jennings has had a fair whack at test cricket and was pretty average. People taking about Bell- Drummond- slim pickings indeed.
-
Jennings is probably a better player now that he was when he played for England. And he scored a 300 recently.
With a tour of Pakistan up next, and his ability against spin, he’d be a no brainer to replace Crawley.
-
Wouldn't mind seeing Duckett given a crack at 3 but obviously they back Pope there for now.
-
Whoever they pick is likely to struggle while they play so little.
-
Whoever they pick is likely to struggle while they play so little.
The bar isn’t exactly very high. Crawley is averaging 16 in the 5 Tests this English summer. And he’s only lasting on average 29 balls.
-
It's been like this for a few years now?
-
Whoever they pick is likely to struggle while they play so little.
Cook in his column has basically said it’s brainless not playing any FC cricket before an important series and in the best part of the summer.
I’m afraid whether we like it or not they cannot cram in any more formats so the oldest format has to give. The money piled into the hundred is so much it’s a project that cannot fail.
Personally I think it’s a load of (No Swearing Please).
But lump it we will have to I think.
As far as picking another opener goes, it would be someone tried before, someone with early season form or someone doing well in the short format.
The selectors who often get panned on this forum really do have a job to pick batsmen.
How many have we tried since Cook/Strauss? I’ve lost count.

Some of the stuff in this article from McCullum is just simply crazy.

Highly entertaining thread this one ;) My boys doing me proud :D
-
It's simple really. Professional cricketers should play one four-day match and one limited-overs match per week for the duration of the cricket season. All players should be available for their counties unless they have been picked by England.
Greed has created this mess. The administrators need to show the game some respect.

That sounds like the old school days of playing a County Championship game around a Sunday League match in the middle of it!
Simon Hughes tells a great story of when playing for Middlesex vs Lancashire in a CC game at Lords the Sunday League fixture was at Old Trafford so they had to trek up to Manchester just for the Sunday and then come back to London to finish the CC game where they only needed 10 runs or so to win!
I suppose that would be one way of getting more red ball cricket in.

It's nothing like it, other than the championship is contested over the whole season (like it ought to be). There would be 2 rest/practice/travel days every week and gaps between fixtures. In the 80s there were none!
It's not that long ago that we had relative sanity.
-
Blocks of alike formats make complete sense in terms of continuity of competitions and quality of cricket - the problem here is that the schedule is so poorly thought out that this year the domestic season has always been playing something different from the international game. Shouldn't be rocket science that the domestic and international schedules should align their red/white ball cricket.
-
Test matches in April and September? Hmm.
-
Ollie Robinson replaces Matthew Potts for Old Trafford
-
If he can last the test he’s a good asset, seems to get movement and is consistent.
Crawley gets another chance, I’d rather too many than too few but you do wonder if he has the game at the moment for test matches.
He is centrally contracted I believe.
-
If you picked a replacement for Crawley based on form this summer, Keaton Jennings would be the form pick but his record against seam is ordinary and this South Africa attack wouldn't be the obvious one you would throw him in against. Otherwise, those who have had a go before who might be hopeful of a recall haven't been pulling up any trees this summer
-
South Africa are batting first.
-
Simon Harmer replaced Marco Jansen…bit perplexing if you ask me…
-
South Africa are batting first.
Always going to bat once they picked 2 spinners.
Interesting team selection, can only think the pitch is very dry because it looks overcast and ideal bowling conditions.
-
Robinson loves a wicket off a no ball doesn’t he…
-
Great start for England. South Africa looking seriously light on batting
-
The first favour Test cricket could do is play the allotted overs.
Went to day 2 at Lords chuffed that 97 overs promised. 7pm later and just about managed the 90 overs. Absolute gits! During a rail strike too. I’m fed of paying £100 every year and not getting 100 overs like a ODI potentially. They can play to 9pm as far as I’m concerned to teach them a lesson.
-
England bowled pretty well from what I saw earlier. South Africa going in with 6 front line batsmen is a bit optimistic.
England aren’t going to be a top side until they solve the top 3. Arguably three of the worse players I’ve ever seen.
-
Having watched England in the 90s, this top 3 is a long way from the worst 3 players I have seen
-
Nope I’ve been watching before that we are no where near as bad now for the top 3
I know Zak is lucky to be in this side but I’m very pleased he lasted out there and comes back tommorow.
Not sure he will be good enough to last but it’s a start at least.
Lees…..well started out ok but now not convinced. Having seen some highlights the ball is doing a bit and against quality bowling it’s tough
-
Is Jensen really missing this test to play in the sixty?
-
Zak Crawley with a neither here nor there 38….should buy him another 25 caps
-
In amidst all the action yesterday, I hope people noted just how superb Foakes was behind the stumps.
-
He has had a very good game and in the face of some hostile bowling his runs are valuable
I never understood why England thought having him as a keeper batsmen felt like weakening the batting.
His first class and test record and when he gets runs proved the opposite
-
Love a bit of Nighthawk action, shame the fun's over.
-
So tomorrow is going to be Day 3 of the test. My £20 ticket for Monday could be bargain of the year.
-

Be interesting if both sides forfeit an innings, that being said the 1st 2 tests didn't last that long so 3 days could be enough.
-
Tricky little final innings chase being set up here.
-
It’s moving all over the shop
I think Crawley needs to play some shots…to his credit he is trying to occupy the crease but his strength is he can play all round the wicket.
Yes….I also think he is lucky to be in but he might as well have a go

At least I got the refund.
