I don't know what I want. I know that I want to be the best batsman at the club, and feel I can't be if I play in the 2's. With a full strength first team I'll bat 5, my seconds skipper begs to have me playing for him every week to open.
Without sounding arrogant. Our twos have been skittled every week and the one game I played we won... Our one's aren't struggling for runs.
Ive been at both sides of this issue mate, and while its not easy being the player in question you need to try and see the wider picture...im only learning that now.
For a few years as a late teen I was opening the bowling in the 2s, but when called into the ones sometimes I wouldnt get a bowl, or would be last option, usually in a lost cause. This really naused me off because I knew I could help win games in the 2s.
But now Im the 1s skipper, and finding that there are some weeks when this situation crops up and is unavoidable.
If someone drops out of the 1s, who do you call up?
If you call up the 2s star player, yes the 2s will miss him, and he will probably not play the same integral role in the 1s.
But whats the other option if you need someone? Do you pull up a 2s also-ran that they wont miss, but then they spend their Saturday chasing leather in a team where they're out of their depth. Thats hardly ideal because they will quickly lose interest.
You may not think it, but your captain wont be doing things deliberately to annoy you, its a thankless task trying to balance everything and keep people happy! Your best bet if you want to be the best batsman in your club is the play where you are asked and just do your best. Because your chance will come sooner or later, and the more you play in the ones, the sooner that chance to have a big impact will come.
