As promised, the Contour weighing in at 3lb and the Uzi Laminate C6+, weighing in at 2lb 15oz.

Fairly major difference in size of profile for the weight.

Having had my eye open for a Stuart Surridge Turbo for a while, I finally found one on ebay. The listing said that the owner had sanded it down and that all it needed was a quick oil. Oooh, I thought, I'll have that. The pictures look okay.

This is what turned up. It's a 2lb 12oz SS Turbo Supreme, with reasonable grain structure and a pretty damn good pick up. It's also got rather a lot of rebound off the mallet, which I wasn't expecting and is a bonus. I am really very fond of the shape of the bat as it has a very traditional and classic profile, as can be seen looking up the toe, and for a bat of its age, it has quite a bit more wood than I expected, and a lot more than the SS Contour I also own, which is thinner and very heavy.

This is dressed in the early nineties livery of around the same period as the 333 and is a surprisingly chunky bat for its era. Okay, it's not the special laminated one that Gooch used, but still, tt's a nice piece of willow. I also remember our opening batsman in the school U-16 team having one...

It has unfortunately had a bad refurb... Pictures first and then I'll go into it.

On the face of the bat can be seen a piece of bat tape. What's that for I wondered? Well, it is to hide the dirty great scar where whoever did the sand down used some form of electric sander and took about 1-2mm off the face but didn't want to damage the stickers. you can also see a similar, if not quite so exaggerated line on the back of the bat.

With a little judicial sanding, this should be possible to blend in.

They also appear not to have sanded it down with a fine grade sandpaper, so it's really quite rough, leaving me a weekend job of additional sanding and wire wool/wax cleaning to try and clear it up.

I don't think it's terrible, and as I say, with a little TLC, it should be as good as new, but it also demonstrates how easy it is to cock up a refurb!

My first bat was a size 4 GM Scorer.

Then a size 5 GM Autograph Plus, then a step up to a SH V800 (with the two "eye" like scoops in the back) then a Centurion Heritage, then a Big Kahuna, which has just perished.

I think i still have the V800, will try and get some pics up.

I've seen a few people asking for pics of a slaz v12 on this thread. I've got a v12 super from about 13 years ago that I've unfortunately just taken the stickers off so I can attempt a refurb. I must have got it in about 97 and used it for 4 or do seasons before I gave up playing in 2001. It's about 2lb 12 and since I started playing again last year I use it in nets to avoid knackering my match bats as we have horrible cheap practice balls.

I'll take some pics when I have chance and post them on here, I'll also post pics after my refurb attempt.

It's a cracking bat and I used to love slaz stuff when I was younger, had a v100 5star off a club pro too and that was brilliant.

Time for another of those classics. This time we have a Hunts County Insignia ES that weighs in at 2lb 12oz. This is quite an early version of this bat but still displays the characteristic hump of the Insignia and the lesser duck bill of the toe. Another classic Hunts bat, when Hunts made great bats. It doesn't have the largest of edges, but plenty of meat in the middle. This one is still in great nick and would serve anyone well in a match I think. It certainly enjoyed a bit of "hammer" time. With this era of Hunts bats, it is almost impossible to ignore the ghostly stag on the stickers, which has sadly ceased to be quite so spooky looking.

The Insignia is one of my favourite bat shapes, mostly because I used one for years, and this particular example is a surprisingly big version of the bat for it's weight. It has good balance, and I think would be quite destructive in the middle.

Here are some pictures for your delectation...

Two bats I'd love to see if anyone has them are the Open Championship as used by David Gower in the late 80s and early 90s, and the Peter Kippax that was a broad copy of the SS Jumbo shape...

Anyone...?

I just recently destickered my Rapide (Or Reflex, or soemthing?) from the same era...Even more of a classic shape (makes the insignia look positively futuristic!) - I though of it as Viv Richards esque at the time! - Bearing in mind I hadn't used it in about 10 years was amazed at how hard it was and serves me very well as my net bat. I call it the toothpick next to my other bulbous bats though it's slender, traditional straight shape belies it's power at putting anything away.

Dunno, one of my first bats was an OC and it was a lovely piece of willow - not necessarily the biggest middle, but when you found it, hell, the ball went forever.

Anyone remember the Sovereign bats used by a few Kent CCC players in the mid-90s? They were blue and had a crown on the front. A kid in my U-13s team had one that was covered in a bed sheet-like scuff but by 'eck did it go.

I was sorting some photos from the Lords show last night and will be doing the rest tonight.
And have a couple of photos of the SS Jumbo that SS had there, if that's any good? The pics wil be up partly tonight and over the weekend.

I think that was the problem. Finding the middle...
