Just how much does the make of the bat really matter?
« on: August 05, 2011, 08:35:14 AM »

Having done my 3 x t 20 bay test earlier this year and used three different bats in the middle, I have come top the conclusion that the make and specific shape of the bat at my level of cricket is all but nonsense. A mid-to-low middle and reasonable balance seems to work for me.

Whether it is pressed well is clearly very important, as is confidence in your weapon, but having used top grade, grade 2 and grade 3 bats over the last three seasons, I've scored more runs due to the coaching tips than the bats.

Am I delusional?

if pressing is important to you, and certain presses are key attributes of certain makes, then yes, the make IS important

no you are not delusional, but everyone knows if you like the stickers on the bat it, you will score more runs with it...

Not at all - I think I'm in the same boat Tim.

I 'm using an £80 bat and have hit over 600 runs with it this season. The reason I'm using it is because it felt great in my hands and made me feel confident.

I work about 5 minutes away from the M&H shop and can honestly say the bat I have feels as comfortable as some of the works of art worth over £250 I picked up in their shop.

One of our guys had a £80 GN Oblivion at nets last night. I had a knock with it and it felt wonderful. The printed face looks really horrible though!

I think if you've got good basic technique, almost any bat will score you runs - the rest is marketing bull****.

But if u have a stick u can trust it gives more confidence. Which in turn increases chances of success at the crease.

Why do I need to trust my stick? It isn't the stick that makes the runs...

No - but it is the stick if you middle the ball totally out of the screws (to use a golfing metefor) and get caught on the fence as it doesn't have the middle of a better bat.

spend £250 on coaching sessions with buzz or on a bowling machine "grooving" shots. It will improve performance more than getting a higher grade willow. The wood only dictates how far the ball goes, not if you hit it or not. Getting the level of practise a "pro" gets will mean you time and middle the ball more often anyway.

No substitute for ability.

let me ask you . . .why does Sachin and other prominent pro's pay so much attention to their bats. infact they reject a large number of bats given to them.
having the right bat matters, it give you confidence. i can only speak for myself, not sure what the others think. but if my bat isnt right, its always in the back of my mind when im batting. i shoud be thinking about the ball not the bat.

i have a truly exceptional CA TRD at home, it weighs 2lb 8oz but is utterly massive for the weight. its a truly awesome bat, but the handle doesnt feel right for me. will i use it, no unless i get the handle set up sorted.

If ST paid so much attention to his cricket bats he would have signed for a bat manufacturer and not a PLC.

Because they are professional players. Tim's comment was about different bats at his playing level. I'm sure the higher up the ladder you go the more it makes a difference but not a huge amount.

An an analogy, if you gave Jimi Hendrix a cheap £100 guitar he would still sound like Jimi Hendrix - it's more to do with in-built technique and style than the tool. I believe if you gave Sachin or Ponting a grade 3/4 bat they'll still be the same player.

Surely the stickers on his bat bear no relation to the actual bat being used though?

Surely a person held in such high esteem around the world would not use a product that is not produced by the brand he is the ambassador for ?

Adidas do not make cricket bats , in fact Adidas make zero products.
