Just to keep everyone interested, these are the scores from the bats that we were able to properly rate. Thanks to Pete for bringing such a massive selection, and that is reflected somewhat in the number of bats we were able to score. Everyone wanted a go with so many that these below were the ones we were able to rate. Scoring is as before, with a single modification. The VD is based on the standard price of a bat rather than the price paid.



The GM Icon that scored very highly is apparently a Pro bat made for Ravi Bopara, and it weighed more than three pounds. The pick-up and ping were amazing and it looked pretty good, but for all of us it was really unusable, as we were all far too late to the shot with it. So late in fact, that it was visibly possible to see.

I'd be interested to see if ratings ('ping') in particular varied if the bats were used blank.

I'd suspect they wouldn't. Some of the bats just make the most amazing sound, and feel incredible when you hit the ball. And you notice it. I was massively surprised by the Woodstock. I really wasn't expecting it to be as good as it was. Previously, a bat that you'd have expected to blow everything away (TK Lam with C6+ Handle) didn't do quite as well as we expected.

The other one to really show up well was the £50 Slazenger. Pick a good one and it will go, but finding a good one is much harder.

Don't forget the guys testing the bats (especially the Stig) have access to the best bats available - branding is important in the shops - but the difference in the power and sound of the shots can't be faked - this is why with the test we have a section for Presentation - as it is important for bats being sold to the masses.

Also if you ask any of the testers how many grains there were on any given bat, I doubt they would remember!! It was all about feel of the shot

It's good to see that the one traditionally profiled bat is right near the top of the rankings. Especially when that LAver Ultra scores so low..... I knew thick edges were a gimmick  ;) Actually, having used that Scat very recently it is a real beauty....and the other one I used back in the summer was just as good. In fact I have used most of the bats mentioned in this list (The same bats not similar ones) and I am quite surprised the Woodstock was as high as it is. It's a mega bat but personally I would have had the Charlie French over it.....it's all personal preference though....

Good work fellas, makes for some interesting reading.... :D

The main thing giving the Woodstock the advantage is the Presentation. It's labelling and shape seem to appeal more. If you were testing on pick-up and with a mallet though, you'd walk away with the Charlie French. Personally, I didn't want to put the CF down when I was using it. It was SO good and so rewarding when you hit the ball.

That's exactly what I thought when I used it. It picks up nicely and it seemed very powerful and pretty forgiving too, especially off the front foot. The Woodstock is a fine looking bat though, can't disagree with that... :)

I can't believe I missed out on that Charlie French Bat it sounds awesome!

the Stig has texted me something about the GM luna being pretty good (and claiming it has nothing to do with his panchant for GM stuff!!) He thinks that the ping was better than "only" an 8

For me, when I first saw the CF, It was everything I didn't like about bats, thick edges, too much concaving and a really flat face. The day after I used it I was very, very close to buying one and I still am!  :)

I know the guys taking part own a lot of very high quality bats, and know a lot about bats, but do you really think you have no preconceptions or bias when using certain bats?

Do you honestly think that it wouldn't be obvious that you were using a Laver Ultra if it didn't have the stickers on it?

To add to that, both Charlie French and Woodstock are not brands that generally as well known (perhaps unlike Laver and Screaming Cat) in the real world.

The other point I would make is that I honestly believe that the good small brand bats we have tested in the last two sessions really have been generally better than the major brands. The exception to this is the 3lb monster GM Icon. It is an amazing beast that went like the clappers, is stickered as a 909 and is unusable due to its weight, but scores very well on all the rating criteria.
