I love opening, as the person I open with is a long-time mate, and we spend all of our innings taking the piss out of each other whenever we miss a shot or anything - makes it relaxed and funny, not all serious and tight.

One memorable Sunday match, turned up just to have a walk around the ground (playing away) and one of our guys doesn't show. End up playing and borrowing kit. Not fussed about batting so go in at I think 7 after around 30 overs and play and miss at the first couple. Bowler announces loudly 'We're through to the tail, this bloke doesn't know which end of the bat to hold' and so on.

Hmmmm, the bowler is wearing trainers and I think to myself - we've never played these guys before, they don't know me, and the boundary straight is an easy miss-timed six away. There's no way I'm going to be sledged by a guy in trainers. So I stand a yard outside the crease and walk down the track every ball.

End up scoring a century in 42 balls, last 50 in 13 balls. Fastest in the clubs history.

Thanks for motivating me.

On that track, we played a game last year and our captain was on holiday so a Veteran was called up who had not played for 6 years and had never seen me play. Obviously didn't like the look of me, so threw me in at no. 9. After everyone scoring a duck apart from him, we were on 39-8 after 17 overs. I came in and blocked my way to 11 and finally got bowled in the 46th over whereupon the next man in got a duck also.

Was great when I was just in, as they went on at our captain for next 10 overs telling him how he'd got the order wrong, until they got frustrated and started moaning.

The Mark Boucher one is great and seems to really get to some people...

'What are you averaging this year mate, 9-10, no more than that surely. Top score 20?' Keep on mentioning how the pressure is mounting as they get to 20, 'don't chuck it now' 'we'll all clap you if you get past it'.... and see the steam rise!

One memorable match, their last man comes out needing 1 to win off 1 ball. The lad a talented leggie hasn't bowled and so hasn't done anything so far. He's also a young lad and obviously nervous coming out to face the last ball....

'Mate you've done nothing so far, don't let your team down now and lose the match on the last ball - they'll tell you it doesn't matter, but we all know iof you get out you've lost the match for them' and so on. Fair play he gets a single and ties the match...

The "One shot wonder" always gets me and its usually right.

But in one case it turned into a 2 and 3 shot wonder. Safe to say didnt last much longer than that. Slogger is not the way to go.

I think the benefit of ‘chat’ in the field is two fold.

For me the main aim is to keep everyone buzzing and maintain that feeling of being on top of the batsmen as a team. For this purpose any ‘noise’ works really.

As far as true sledging – its effect varies massively from batter to batter. For most guys if you can apply more pressure with the occasional comment to your teammates then why not.

I always think if you can get the batsman to address you before you address them directly then that’s the first part of the battle won – they’re thinking about you and not their batting.

Hitting the nerve can be important – if a batsman has scored quickly in the past against you but is now looking for a draw from an early stage then you might do well to mention the fact that he looked so good last time he came and he must be battling with his form now (or whatever).

As always, there are exceptions to the rule. There are certain batsmen that you do not sledge. You generally learn these as they get more determined the more you talk and smash a ton!

We had one game last season where it was a bit different.
We were in the field and the two batsman were set. Our bowler was a navy lad who was welsh, word went around the field that after every ball instead of saying " well bowled mate " instead we would "Baa Baa " Every ball the "Baa Baa " would come and you could see the steam starting to rise in him, but the batsmen were begining to chuckle and lose concentration, even the umpires were having a little chuckle. last ball of the over, stumps everywhere clean bowled and we all rolled around laughing. He then saw the funny side.
Great laugh

One game that pee'd me right off last year was after a played a couple of cut shots for four, their skipper from first slip said 'He's got plenty on the back foot boys but i've seen nothing on the front foot'. For some reason this made me angry and two balls later I spooned one to mid-on trying to drive a ball on the up  >:(

When walking at number 3, and being completely stumped by a ball that seamed a mile, the bowler (year older than me and plays for Wiltshire) tells me I can't bat, just made me even more determined. That after I walked off the ground with 86 to my name. Best thing was he got run out with out scoring I think, we won the game easily. And after he refused to shake my hand. I call that a win!

I played for a team as a youngster, I was in my teens and the rest were all 30-50 years old and after being dropped quite a few times over a few seasons for the captains mates to play there 1 game of the season I got annoyed. So I decided to go and play for the team I was playing for on a Sunday, on Saturdays also. The next season we played them, the first game was close but we got beat which they all thoroughly enjoyed reminding me about.

During the sane season they were short for a 20/20 match one night and asked of I'd play which I duly obliged. I came in a 9-4 in the 7th over after the a couple of the 'captains mates' had got out cheaply. I ended up 76 not out which at that point was my highest ever score and we won the match. I enjoyed my little victory in showing them that I shouldn't have been dropped but kept it quiet.

We played each other again in the return fixture in the league and we got trounced much to their amusement, again I took all the banter but gave nothing. Then the last game of the season came around and it was the cup final against you know who!

We posted a decent score I was run out (has happened 4 times in finals!!??) for a few, but we were happy with our score. There innings started well until I was lying on my back looking at the ball in my hand with our WK looking over me in utter amazement. I had taken a blinding slip catch but I kept my celebrations to a minimum. A few over later a ball goes down the legside and beats our keeper do I set off after it. I hear the batsman shout for 2 as 'it's only Kenny you know how slow he is!' I produced the best throw ever and got a direct hit with him being short by inches, clearly not as slow as he thought.

A few wickets fell but the target was getting lower when my skipper tossed me the ball for the first time all season and told me to bowl. First over I picked up a streaky wicket to be fair but again didn't really celebrate to much. A few over later and I was bowling against my old skipper and had warned my keeper that I'd thrown one fast down the legside. Sure enough he charged down the wicket I fizzed it down leg and had him stumped of a wide. Victory was now in sight so the celebrations bubbled up more than previously.

Not long later I took the catch in the deep that won us the game and the cup. I made sure I enjoyed that catch and made sure they knew it. To be fair I got on really well with all my old team mates and had a great night with everyone. I ended up returning to play for them a few years later when I would come back from uni but I made sure they were frequently reminded of the day I got 5 of them out!

Sorry for the reminiscing but it's a great example of actions speaking louder than words!

Nothing really bothers me unless I personally get insulted without reason. I got called a c**t after getting out and walking back because I hit the bowler for successive boundaries.

Also played Byo's lot a couple of seasons ago and at the end of the over some twattish kid kicked the ball which hit me in the grille, that annoyed me a great deal.

When I'm a fielder I'm very annoying as I'm sure Tom or Byo could confirm haha

Got to admit I found that quite amusing!!   :D

Not much winds me up, just smile and get on with it - the bowler always has another ball, although when I was bowling last year I got smashed for a 6 and the batsman said I was the worst spinner he ever faced.  Got him out the next ball which was highly amusing - just smiled at him as he walked past!!!
