I had a bit of spare time yesterday
« on: November 19, 2012, 03:35:05 PM »

So i shaped another bat.
Finished weight is 2lb10oz. 30mm edges. A little bit of concaving.

I'll get some more pictures up from my camera. These are just phone pictures.

Very nice! Seems to be quite an offset edge there! 8) Is it just me, or is the spine slightly off centre? Might just be the camera angle! Looks a tiny bit Distinction-ish to me!

I think it might just be the angle. I measured it, and it came out right. I didn't intend to offset the edge, i guess it just happened! Picks up nice though!

Orbital sander for the face and edges. Hand for the rest. Go through the grits from 40 to 1200 then polish and oil. Not entirely happy with one or two bits. Just need to give it another sand and polish really...

Try to do the back too with the orbital sander. It is extremely time consuming to do with hands and pretty hard to get desired finish. I do only the fine grade sanding with hands.

Also the greenish Color around the toe is from a very fine grit sanding I guess. I had similar experience while finishing my first bat as the fine grit gets deposited in the very fine scratches made by the tools.

Sounds like you need to go through the grits slower. I've never experienced grit ending up in scratches. Either that or the sandpaper your using is either poor or too much heat caused by excessive pressure is causing the adhesive on the paper to fail.

To me it looks as if the tools have gouged a couple of marks out the back. Possibly need sharpening or adjusting to make finer cuts. Would make sanding alot easier aswell

I struggle to get the sander up the back with the concaving. Got a detail sander somewhere but only have 240 grit sheets for it.

The colour on the toe is from where it got knocked out my hands and onto the grass by my dogs... Thankfully I kept the rest of it off the ground. Lol.

You are right! I did the complete sanding of my first bat via hand and changed the grits before getting rid of fine scratches. The fine sanding paper of around 1500 has a very thin layer of fine grit and I ended up rubbing quite a bit to get rid of those scratches instead they filled with the grit Color.
