Why do you buy what you buy?
« on: January 08, 2013, 06:53:02 AM »

As the title states....

Some of us solely buy top end stuff, why do you specifically buy top tier gear? Is it due to protection? Or you have excess of cash to splash? What is it?

For me its;

I deeply adore cricket, I buy what I buy because I wish to have best of best when I'm batting in the middle. I have absolutely no intent to be braggart, my finances allow me to buy it and I buy it. I will live this life only once, I don't know if I'll be alive tomorrow so better enjoy before I abode six feet under. This doesn't mean I splash my cash like Floyd Mayweather Jr. in a stripclub, I keep cricket finance aside and only use that, am extremely vigilant in that matter at least.

What about you guys (and girls ahem Mrs. Brucie  :-[ )?

Cheers

Cover drive, is that a sexual position? How does it compare with missionary?
As for expensive gear, my Bruce is only allowed cheap, really cheap. I do love a little polyester

I see goodies on the internet and think that is for me! I try to get the best kit at the lowest price I can. I normally only buy when something is an absolute bargain.

betty, a cover drive has nothing to do with the bedroom, but when you hit one perfectly you can get a little tingle.

I have bought all sorts of gear from low end to top end and I think playing with best of the best gives that added bit of confidence and makes my playing experience a bit special. Like Cover Drive said you only live once so why not splash out on something I am passionate about.

I turn into a hoarder and see shiny willow and want it, then realise I don't need it and sell it. There are a few pieces I keep coming back to, i.e. occasional classic bat purchases to add to the these were beauties collection, but usually only at bargain prices, and of course certain bats, like a mongoose, of which I have fallen in and out of love with four times, and this time it is for keeps.

I think it's a bit like an addiction and needs to be kept in step, and over the last few years I've come to realise that while there is some lovely stuff out there and each shiny new bat/set of pads/pair of glvoes that each manufacturer releases might be lovely to look at, I don't have a wall on which to put them, and I sure as hell am not going to use them all.

Because I set aside money for this, budget accordingly, and make sure I do all in my power to get things as cheaply as I can, whether it be because there is a sale on, or because I'm buying a bundle (bat, gloves, pads, bag etc). Most people will buy the best they can afford for their money, just because they like to know that what they've got is just that - the best they can afford. A lot of people will buy their kit from custom/boutique brands, or from people like Asad, because they like the personal touch, that they can speak to someone whom they feel they can trust, and whom they can speak to like a mate, as opposed to an over-the-top salesperson.

To be honest, it is the taste of having something new in your kit, some variety which spices things up for me. Cricket is the sport I have dedicated most of my time training for, and it is my favourite sport. Also, shiny new willow is always nice, but I had a slight epiphany last night, after my latest purchase...

I will be honest and say I'm going to have to seriously consider cutting down in my kit considerably though, it has become ridiculous! I have 4 sets of spare pads in my house, and I don't have 5 pairs of legs! I can understand picking between 2-3 bats for matches and nets, but can I really justify having 10? After I paid the deposit for the lovely Tour Paul hand picked yesterday (the most expensive bat I have ever purchased), I have decided to limit it to 6 bats at any given time, and will do this by selling 2 bats for every 1 I buy. Even if one of them costs the same as 2 bats, that's one bat less I have to worry about using. 8)

I'm afraid the Helios is to stay. ;) Never used anything like it, so I don't see the point in selling it, especially since what I will manage to sell it for won't reflect the true value, which is essentially equivalent to an SPS Tour which is slightly tweaked. 8) What Helios do you have mate? If I cut it down to 6 bats, 7 being more realistic, I will at least be able to give them all personal names. :-[

I've got an Atlas. 2.9 and it feels like a glorious meaty willow feather. Havnt swung it in anger yet, but the mallet says it will do unspeakable things.

Right, I think this is far enough down the page......

I buy mainly when I'm drunk and because I still think shiny new kit will make me a better player.

However, with my finances these days mainly diverted towards magnums of Lambrini, nail bars and scented candles, I only get to buy the cheaper stuff.

Ah right, is this the Aus (inferior) version? :P I jest, I think ALL the Helios bats have extremely good response, as everyone who has done a review on them hasn't really said anything bad about them! 8)

I don't mind too much paying full whack for bats, but not for softs. Pick my softs up in the sales, and quite happy wearing a couple of seasons old gloves/pads.
