The standard applies to 'head protectors' - it is not specific to your position on the field. To my knowledge none of the manufacturers are marketing a wicket keeping helmet like the old Masuri one.
Having re-read the statement issued by the ECB, the key line which has caused the confusion seems clearer in my mind.
''From 30 June 2014, the old BSI standard for cricket head protectors (BS7928:1998) will be withdrawn and the ECB therefore recommends that all new head protectors brought to market are tested against the new standard. However, head protectors which have already been tested against the old standard can and will continue to be available for sale and will not be withdrawn from the market.''
Everyone we have spoken to regarding this issue states that it means any existing stock is fine to be sold through until supplies are exhausted. What it doesn't mean is a helmet that passed the old standard can continue to be manufactured and sold, as any helmet that is manufactured and put forward for sale must comply with the standard at the time, and as the old standard is being withdrawn imminently, that only leaves the new, more rigorous test to go by.
It will remain a murky area, but that is my opinion/take on the matter.
Masuri lids are due to land imminently, i see some of the big retailers had theirs today.
