I play at a level where there is only one bowler we face that might be able to pin me in the face. I always wear a lid as I know I'll eventually top edge on into my own bonce and to be honest I'd rather be slightly hot and uncomfortable for a couple of hours rather than spend the rest of my life with dentures for something that was easily avoidable.

I never used to wear one as i was of the age group that could get a letter from their parents saying we could be exempt if we didnt want to use one. Even upto the point where i designed ours i was reluctant but now its about mitigating the risk of injury and taking it out of the equation should the worst happen.

During our game on saturday our opener had one come off the shoulder of his bat and pin him in the grille that would have hit him in the jaw if he wasnt wearing a lid. It doesnt need to be the quickest bowler that can cause injury as a 40mph ball will still do plenty of damage when it hits something.

I didn't wear a helmet until we went on a tour of Jamaica. Then I thought it was probably sensible as I didn't know what I'd be facing. What I also discovered in the nets prior to that was that i was far less bothered about being hit in the face and it made me more confident, improving my batting. I've worn one ever since.

Have been tweeting Albion on this today (@albionsports and @pgpchappers if you are interested)

they seem to believe that by anchoring the front bolt of the grille to have a maximum gap their current design meets the new requirements.

They don't seem to think they have a problem with the peak of their lids.

Having spent half of saturday trying to force a cricket ball through the gap between an Albion club and the current helmet with a fairly wide gap, I'd say that it's a pretty fair statement.

Further - they have said that their are concentrating on improving protection at the occipital area (for the layman - the back of the head)

In other words - they are creating protection for people who don't look at the ball, turn their heads and get smacked that way.

Really interesting discussions

There were 2 incidents in local cricket that i think might have a few people thinking about wearing a helmet too now. One top edge and egg for Cordys lot and one broken jaw for Biggy B's Minehead boys.

Pic of the egg from Saturday for anyone interested! Was in 3rd XI cricket so no pace on the ball at all until it took the top edge

Sweet Jesus! That would be all I'd need to be convinced that a lid is the way to go.

I had been happy without a lid against anything but real pace for the whole time I've been playing, until I got a beamer from a medium-pacer at the end of last season and top-edged it, resulting in this! Still don't really like wearing one, but several hours in hospital while the doctors worried over whether my eyesight was ok (seems to be no long-term effects fortunately) persuaded me I probably should.

If I'm honest,  it's the bearers in the nets from not very fast bowlers that are the worst,  followed by one of our quicker guys who has a tendency to try and bowl too fast and beams you. Much safer in armour.

the vast majority of injuries i have seen have all come of the bat first and it has eventually encouraged a lot of the team to way them in games now.

I have seen people get hurt in the nets as the quick bowlers have a bit of fun trying to hit the batsmen. Being 14 in the nets I get a fair amount of the short stuff about 1 in 3 although that's less then what the others get . A specially as the bowlers are men you would be mad not wearing a helmet.

For the last 5 seasons. I've always worn a helmet.
And for longer than that I wore thigh pad, inner as well as the normal stuff.never thought I'd need more.

Due to a freak illness I knew nothing off at the time I ended up injured.
I went into a net this winter kitted up as usually.
Our resident idiot pitched a shorter ball. Which I tried to glance but missed. and it creamed me in the side.

5 days later I'm in agony and rushed to hospital. Ruptured spleen! Granted a cricket ball shouldn't have damaged it, but I had a viral infection that had weakened my internal organs and the ball was all that was needed to pop it.

6 months off work, 6 months of my family having to take care of me, half this season missed (and the second half unfit and out of form).

All because i never wore a chest guard. Never even thought of wearing one.

Cost me a lot.

Facial damage could be worse, don't risk not wearing a helmet!

Interesting, I ruptured my spleen a few years ago as well, not through cricket however.

Did you have it taken out?

I was only in hospital for a week while they kept track of it etc but wasn't removed.
