Charlie, are you playing 3s this year?  3rd XI prem is a totally different game to 3rd XI div 1 or 4th XI like you're used to.  Slightly better fielding, more accurate bowling.  Take your time and us your head.  And for god's sake don't let nemo score more runs than you!
I am in the 2s at the moment! I am sure you have heard all that is going on! Its hard work to say the least, but I guess it will take time! :D

My season so far has consisted of 0 off 3, 0 off 1, and 1 off 3, batting at 4. Lost the first game by 220 runs, 2nd by 8 wickets, 3rd was rained off, and 4th by 220 runs again. Gonna be a long ass season!

My scores now go:
0, 20, 1, 5, 8*

That makes my average 8.5 form 5 inning, it a good thing I can bowl really!  :(

Yeah, Sandy and Tom have given me he lowdown!  Take your time and wait for the bad balls is the best advice I can give you.  You've got a good technique and a good eye, so make use of that

The longer you stay in the middle the more bad balls you are likely to receive. Every now and then you will get one with your name on but so be it, that's cricket. It's impossible to score runs sat in the shed!

Now in my dotage I suffered the ignominy of being overtaken on my second run, by the skipper, who had called 'three' after I poked one through the covers. Run out by a mile!  :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

If they know they (excluding crap bowling or someone coming off (rare)), are too weak batting wise to actually chase 252 then why go for it? I do hear people complain about teams. It going for it but why should they gift their wicket trying to hit out etc. This is where draw cricket is better as you have to get a team out as well as annihilate them with the bat. Our game Sunday technically says we 'thrashed' the oppo but as we didn't get them all out I personally think we shouldn't have won as we weren't good enough to take all their wickets.

Like I said mate this was our first game in the league. All I was saying was they entered into a league that is 40 overs a side win or lose. They opened with 2 blokes in later stages of there playing days and did t play a single attacking shot in. 13 overs. Our opening bowlers are very good but are also 14 & 17 years old. There kids had a kind of go at making there score look respectable in a run chase.

If that's the way they want to play no problems with me but why enter a league? Why not just arrange friendlies and play time games? Why? Because generally people don't like them every week and youngsters certainly will not be atractted to play the game

as an 11 year old i was often the toast of the team because i went in and blocked out 3 overs. It made me feel like i was the star, i had not just turned up to make up the numbers and field 3rd man/fine leg.

if i had been playing this win or lose stuff i would have just gone in and done whatever, no one would have said anything to me and I wouldnt have got the buzz i got when they all clapped me off and gave me a massive wedgey in the changing rooms to celebrate. Once blocked out 20 overs with the other young lad at number 10 to save us from defeat, the other team was livid, we were on a massive high. By 14 years old i was opening and scoring hundreds. Doubt i would have been able to do that step up to opening if i had been playing win or lose cricket, i managed to work on my temperament, concentration and not get phased at all. By 16 i was playing ECB league (wasnt called that then) and batting 7 and standing up 50 overs every game ..... sure thats why i fell out of love with wicket keeping :(

I think timed games are good for kids, no pressure at all. If there is a big total, play your own game and if its get close with 15 overs left then you can try to win.

I'm with John. Win/lose teaches nothing but you have to hit out most of the time.

As for why entering a league.. Because friendly cricket is dying so leagues are basically a way for most teams just to get fixtures. Most teams don't really treat them seriously from what I can tell, in fact there are only a handful who do. So tbh, I would treat league games as friendlies now.

stop batting aggressively and accumulate runs.

its not all like the 20-20 tv shows .... slap bang wallop.

When I got 99 on saturday I was just thinking 'Get yourself in for the first 30 balls and go from there' and I just tried to take it one ball at a time.  The only ball that matters is the next one :)
