Played in the most vile game I've had the displeasure to play in this weekend. One of our players put the effort in to put the covers on and managed to put them on the wrong way (basically, the hoses are only on one end and if you get it wrong then it can flood over at the blocked end). Anyway, Fridays weather meant it did indeed flood so the wicket was basically wet. They moaned and groaned about it and were put in to bat after losing the toss. Their players batted like it was a flat road and shock horror, kept nicking off and spooning on the up drives to fielders.. of course, blaming the wicket each time. The only thing I can say as someone that batted for 126 balls on it, was that the odd one popped but only as much as 6 inches, no more. I think I had 2 that hit the gloves and that was it, so it was nothing major. Not ideal, but not a minefield, you just needed patience and technique rather than trying to slap every ball.
Anyway, they were all out for 160 and we chased it down but they were the most abusive people I've had the displeasure of playing against. It was fat this, fat that.. you're crap this, you're crap that, blocking, leaving, when are you playing a shot.. only got x shots.. all you do is this or that.... Bowlers walking down the wicket after bowling to give abuse, fielders coming up to you between overs to have a chirp. All this after WEPL have sent out letters to all clubs with new rules abotu behaviuor as it's been so poor this year.. I questioned it to the umpires who seemed to take no notice.
all in all, the team won and I got to have a 126 ball net but it was horrendous. No wonder participation is down if people think it's acceptable on a sports field. I left the field and the day feeling really crap, having not enjoyed the day at all, which really shouldn't be happening in amateur cricket.
