We won the toss and batted first yesterday. 271-9 off 50 with our number 4 making 88 and our 17 year old number 6 making 60.
I made 3* at the end, and more importantly denied the opposition getting full bowling points.

The opposition were 227 all out in response, our captain got injured batting so we had a sub fielder (a 12 year old!) who took a skyer. Our 17 year old added a 5-fer to his 1st inning 60. Not a bad day for him.
Their overseas had the best tantrum I've seen, with a lot of swearing and repeatedly beating his pads when he got out. He then decided to start giving us verbals from the boundary (which did nothing other than make him look a tit!)
Their captain also went all Ricky Ponting about our use of a sub fielder, even though he saw our captain get injured and saw he could barely walk (having been carried off the pitch!)
On a personal note I took 1-40 from my 10 overs which means I'm likely to retain my place in the side, meaning a trip the the Isle of Wight next week.

Moved down from my opening spot to bat at three, which I enjoyed as I found I played with more intent to score runs. Came in in the 9th over and felt good at the crease. Batted about 6 overs - one of which I plundered for 13 - before being caught off the back of the bat going through a pull shot too early. It was a rank long hop and fully deserved to be whacked, bit annoying!

Won though, and cemented second place in the league.

Didn't play any cricket this weekend for two reasons. 1. Our square suffered rather under the rain and water getting through covers and 2. We gained this little fellow:

Backs still in agony.

Bowled 8 overs. 0 for 34. Having only bowled 5 overs all season. Wasn't ready for it.

Oppo put on 159 all out.

We collapsed to 28 for 5.

Some middle order fightback got us to 100for 8. And then our skipper hit 51 not out of 27balls.
Unfortunately he left our 11 on strike for 1 ball when we need 3 to win and he lobbed it to short leg for a catch.

Lost by 2 gutted.

Absolute stinker this weekend. Playing friendly cricket has it's drawbacks and when the team we were originally due to play pulled out late Wednesday evening, we were subjected to the lottery of the Conference. To make things worse our lovely ground was being hired all weekend, so we even had to contend with a lottery on the facilities we'd get to play on. The best fixture we could get was a 'medium-weak' side playing on 'astro turf'...

We arrived at the ground only to find three 'pitches'. Two looked great, though they had teams already playing on them. The third had a load of kids on it practicing and the pitch wasn't astro turf, it was a roll out matt placed in the middle of a football pitch. That's the one we were on, and those kids practicing were our oppo.

Skipper won the toss and bowled first so we could get it out the way and leave quickly. We bowled them out for 55 and won by 10 wickets.

The murmuring's of discontent swirling around the terrible games friendly cricket is producing on Saturday's for us grew so loud I believe it is inevitable that we join a league for the 2017 season for the first time in our 44 year history as a club.

Village cricket is dead.

My recollection (even going back 25 years) is that Village Cricket was very much a Sunday afternoon thing. Saturdays, even then, were for league. I still play what is best considered "Village cricket" on Sundays.

We've been playing friendly cricket both Saturday and Sunday since the 70's. In the Nineties we even had two teams. When I first joined this club about 5 years ago, we used to have very decent fixtures lined up on Saturdays against other friendly sides. In fact the standard on the Saturday would be higher than Sunday's as the clubs we'd play against would take it more seriously than the league clubs we'd play on Sunday's.

Since then, all the decent teams we used to play have either folded or become really weak to the point where playing Saturday's is more of a chore, so now we are struggling to get a team out as people would rather play against a better league oppo on the Sunday.

My club is a village in the Worcesterdhire countryside we don't play Sunday village cricket or friendlies anymore as we can't get the players also it became a problem As there are not many clubs that are still  playing Frendlies or on a Sunday or midweek. There  are also lots of clubs around Worcestershire who don't play Sunday leaque cricket anymore.
