Ireland, who performed conspicuously better than England in Australia and New Zealand, may infer more second-class treatment at the selection of such an experimental side but, after the grim showing in 50-over cricket over the winter, England's fans should find plenty to be enthusiastic about among the group.

Ansari, who opens the batting for Surrey in Championship cricket, bowls slow left-arm and could fulfil the spinner's role - although it is understood England plan to play Rashid. Billings, who scored 458 runs at an average of more than 100 and a strike rate of 154.20, will compete with Bairstow for the gloves, but either could still play as a specialist batsman.

Left-arm seamer Willey has been tipped for an England call-up since starring on T20 Finals Day in 2013, when he scored 60 from 27 balls and then took a hat-trick to help Northamptonshire to an unexpected triumph.

Finn and Bresnan - who has begun the season in good form for Yorkshire after making a change to his action - will lead an otherwise inexperienced attack. Boyd Rankin's good form for Warwickshire has been offset by the need for an injection on a back injury, while Nottinghamshire left-armer Harry Gurney is also injured.

Or a realisation to the fact that the World Cup squad was so far from the modern way of playing they needed to do something different.

I wouldn't be that generous. I bet they're hoping for rain and then it will back to the tried and tested....

thanks for that I was going to have to cricinfo Ansari one day stats, but no need he's doing great in 4 day cricket. Obvious selection. Who's Gregory?

Vince, Hales, Roy, Taylor, Billings I get. The rest I'm not sure about

Willey is a left armer with bags of talent and a distinct dislike for Jade Dernbach = plus
Gregory is the workhorse at Somerset. A bit Trego like as a bowler, without the body art. Bats fairly well.

Stokes, Jordan, Ali and possibly Ballance to be added also.

Edit - forgot Rashid too

Not sure which way I lean on this one.

On the one had it does look like a complete re-imagining of teh squad & a chance to try out something different, on the other it's a bit 'who' and lacking experience etc.

But as mentioned above - after the WC debacle, maybe its what we need.

Think Taylor could be good as capt - he looks good and incontrol when I've seen him at Notts and he has done it for the Lions for a few years.

Maybe this is being treated more as a audition and a rebuilding.  I can understand the need to rest anderson, root et al with the 17 test summer going to be knackering.

Still, I think (hope) that there is a little extra motivation in Ireland's play given the complete change presented by Eng.

I thought Willey had faded a bit from England recognition, but if he's not a fan of Jade then it's a start. Gregory sounds like its a squad pick (hopefully). Glad to see we might be saved by Stokes, Jordan in the bowling department (not). At least both of them hit a long ball.

Ballance after a stellar world cup could be back (though he was mucked around).

Taylor (capt)- Not a bad call, hopefully a long term replacement for Eoin.
Ansari - ???
Bairstow - Has experience and may force his way back into the full side.
Billings - the future, blood him early!
Bresnan, - get him back in the Test side ahead of Jordan too!
Finn - Sort of get it, needs to get beck to his best.
Gregory - ???
Hales - Should get a run in the ODI side (and the Test side in my opinion!) A potential superstar.
Roy - Has scored heavily in domestic cricket, deserves a go.
Vince - about time! (yes, I'm a Hampshire fan).
Willey - been call for his call up since T20 finals day 2013. It probably would've happened sooner if it weren't for injuries.

Gregory is a decent quick - look up his stats - he will do well.

Ansari - gun fielder, decent bat and decent bowler - being picked as he is viewed as a FEC. (both descriptions)

I like it. What I don't like is that even if these guys do well I can guarantee the lot of them will be dropped for the next ODI.
