I don't know many (if any) people who buy bats solely for the stickers. If you have, for example, GN softs, and you want to buy a GN bat, fair enough but the person won't buy a bat they don't like. And as you should know, it may be a grade 1 bat, but a) Bats are graded mainly on aesthetics, unless you get a smaller brand who genuinely grade on quality of wood, and b) Bats come in different shapes and sizes, with more wood in different places, higher/lower sweet spots, etc., so for some people a supposedly lower grade bat may be better for them feel-wise. What I'm saying is that different people have different requirements, and if you're on a tight budget, then you get the bat which feels right for the price you can afford, which could be a GM Apex 808, or a Kook Ice 400, or a Hawk X-Bow.

And Carn: I agree, stickers aren't great, they'd have to come off!

smaller brands genuinely grade on quality of wood.
sorry mate but look around this forum it is a classic example you mostly buy bats of here on stickers/grains.

if somebody put up a bat on the for sale section what is the first thing you do(even i do) look at grains you never know the performance or the pick up.

that's exactly what i said if you read my post mate! i said most bigger brands grade on aesthetics, whereas some smaller brands genuinely grade on quality of wood. people don't necessarily buy bats off here based on the stickers, but most companies come with a reputation. even with that reputation, most smart bat buyers (i'm sure petehosk will be able to confirm this for me ;)) will still check out grain quality. which brings me back to what you were saying earlier, people buy bats based on quality of wood, and shape, as opposed to the sticker, but also on what feels best to them. Therefore, a price for the same bat will be interpreted differently by 2 people, one may think it's expensive, because it doesn't feel right, whereas for others, it may be the perfect pick-up/feel for them, so it's a decent price. It's subjective opinion methinks!

tumo read my post it called sarcasm

do not believe the hype on smaller bat company produce better bats.

yes it a very subjective opinion but to say smaller company's genuinely grade on quality of wood is just plain madness whilst bigger do not.

my point at first was not about bigger or smaller or custom or not it about people knocking bats they no nothing about at all about.

like i have previously stated i think there is room for reproduction company's like evolution if they are one maybe some of the other will look and thing oh might not be able to charge this.

There is a reason why more bats are being made in india and trust me it not all about them just being cheap.

but for a man who did not know lots of salix and newbery are made in India your doing quite well.

there is kit out there at every price for everybody no matter what your budget is

how's them clipper pads i miss them

I don't think it's a case of people knocking bats they know nothing about, because a lot of people on here (especially bat-makers on here) will have tried many out, to get a feel of what they like, to test the market, or just to whore bats like Pete. I don't think that the prices that some of the companies charge is fair, especially as I've seen what the RRP's are for Hunts compared to the factory prices that they sell them to cricket shops for are, and I'd assume that the other companies are fairly similar on that level. But most companies will claim that the recession has forced prices up, and not having access to their books, people can't disprove that. I agree that some companies will give you very good deals, such as Solitaire's bats, and Woodworm's new stuff, for example, and that bigger companies have to realise that they need to lower prices to make it a more competitive market. But the problem is, you won't find a lot of the better priced companies' kits in the average sports shop, because of the dominance of the bigger brands. It might change with time though. Not had full chance to test out clippers yet, still wearing in my bradbury pads as well!

nice mate i get trade at hunts county and the mark up is just daft and driving people to look elsewhere like indian company's.

it interesting i get trade at a few comapny's but after getting my last match  bat from a Indian source i will find it hard to match the quality in terms of everything i wanted in terms of money i spent  and that with english company's offering trade.

i find it hard to believe people are paying over £150 pounds on bats these days and that is with trade when you can get better in house made good bats for around a £100 pound.

and yes i have a top end laver and i also have a few others including a £110 pound bat i would bet on against any on here.

but like you said buying bats is very subjective

what makes you sure you're bats are so incredible? i reckon i've had one which would peform as good, it doesn't matter where you get it from or who makes it as much as the actual cleft. and a great cleft could go to any of the brands

dan i agree but i know 2 of my bats are a little special and that is my point one cost £300 one cost about£110 both were gambles but as i have said the quality in performance is no difference.

i sure most people have a gun bat on here and like what they get but as I HAVE STATED not many have used them and a certain person started slating them without prior information.

all i am saying is do not believe everything you read on here as all fellow cricketers you all know your budget and work within it but if a company want to try and give you something cheap but still quality then surely there worth a look at no matter were it is made

Procricket, I'll give you £1000 cash if you can get me a Newbery men's bat that has been made in India.

You know what you know and seem to think that it is enough, that sadly is not enough, you can never know too much and so while we are all short of complete knowledge you should understand that your opinion is no better than anyone else's. However some facts are ignored, I don't think you can make a bat without machining and pressing it, so one of your bats was not made by the brand, merely shaped and any incredible performance will have to be credited to the bat maker rather than the brand. Since you think I cannot produce a bat that beats the one that has been made by my friend for you as he does for me the challenge has been fulfilled.

Surely the idea is to buy, try and review. I'll be willing to let you use some bats in the net to change your mind.
