Gentlemen, let's keep it civil... Then this thread might last longer than the Aussie innings before being locked. #gonein60runs

Joe Roots  score of 124 batting 2nd on the 1st day  of a test match must be an Ashes record.
Also for England to score 274 in just 45 more overs than Australia scored 60 on the same first day pitch is remarkable.

records were tumbling all over the shop yesterday.
Dare to dream it doesn't get much better than this.

Not sure ive ever seen a player is such form as Root is now. He is actually making it look stupidly easy

Can't be bothered to read all the thread I missed yesterday. What I would say is sky were spot on in their analysis of the Aussies being caught square on. Butcher summed it up by saying batting is a side on game, especially in England. Look at root and see how late he plays it if you want an example of how to play in moving conditions. I'm sure Smith will be fine but still paused the moment he hit the ball and he was horribly squared up to a ball that didn't do much. Teams will be watching and  he can expect the next 12 months to be tougher.

Hope Root can bat for a long time today too, really push home how much of a purple patch he's in, would love a 200+ from him!

I would LOVE to see Root carry on batting a Stokes, Buttler and Mo all chip in with some runs, would be the ultimate insult to get a victory by an innings and a lot of runs.

Well, we'll find out soon enough. Interestingly, the conditions at the start of the day today are not dissimilar to those of yesterday. Maybe the pitch is a little dryer. Wonder how the aussie bowlers will get on....?

Anyone know the rules regarding using the 1st innings ball? I had a conversation yesterday, and we reckoned (given the option) you might want to use the original ball. Its only 18overs old, swinging nicely and the bowlers have trust in it. There is no promise a newly selected ball will swing/seam etc in the same manner. Am I just being stupid and a new ball HAS to be taken?? Or can you start with the old one and have the option to introduce the new one later??

The fielding Captain can request a new ball anytime after 80 overs has been bowled with the old one.

Regardless of if a new innings has begun? Never knew that!

When did I say Smith was regal you moron?

And unlike Root, Smith has actually scored more than 1 fluke hundred outside his home conditions

Yes, he's scored two (out of 10) away from home. Overwhelming evidence in your favour there...

Joe Root:

Home average 66
Away average 29

Overrated? Just a bit.
