Lost the toss and asked to field today.

I effectively wasted half a days holiday to field for 40 overs then scratch around for 9 before top edging a dolly to cover. I'd kill to make double figures :(

On the bright side my side did chase 250 in 40 overs so I get a win as captain on the results...

Now I’ve finally calmed down after Sunday’s confrontation, I can reflect on the actual cricket!

Batting wise, I played myself in on a horrendous pitch before swiping across the line and being bowled. However, I’ve had a class weekend with the gloves, not letting a single bye through on either day on two horrific pitches. Having only started keeping in June, i’m getting better every game even though I’m learning on the job.

I still need to learn to not snatch at the ball when I’m up to the stumps as I dropped a catch off the spinner as I pushed at it. I’m going to try and find some drills to help with this. On another note, I was stood up to the stumps for most of the weekend, my quads are in pieces!

Out bowlers had a poor day sat. Conceeded 296 runs. Was not pretty. In reply we finished 275-7 in a heated, niggly mtch which wasnn’t much fun.

I have been doing ok this year but struggling to dictate and get on top of the bowlers. Volenteered to move up and open as our openers have been struggling. The swap worked. I didnt get many but we put on 70 for first wicket well above the run rate and i saw off new ball. So appears they want me to continue opening up.

I made double figures!

Batting at 3 tonight in a 16 over game, I had made 17 and was feeling untroubled for the first time in a long time. I then went to clip a half tracker off my hip only for the ball to shoot and clip the base of my leg stump! (don't you love council pitches).

We ended up 185-3 off out 16, with the opener 119*

It may not have been a big score for me personally but there were some promising signs if nothing else.

In reply the opposition made 152-6. They were up with the rate for a lot of the game and things were getting a bit twitchy with 4 overs to go. I took a catch at 2nd slip off our leg spinner (who was adamant he didn't need 2 slips!) and was even allowed to bowl the last over to defend 41 :D

My Sunday team toured North Devon this weekend for the first time. I missed the first game due to work commitments and they played Ilfracombe CC. After all this heat they ended up playing in the rain and narrowly lost as they chased down our 140. We unfortunately weren't able to find a fixture for the Saturday, so a day in the pub and crazy golf resulted in a lot of worse for wear players! On the Sunday we played Braunton CC on a lovely parched ground. I've never played at a ground with a hot tub before! We batted first and got off to a steady start from the clubs old stalwarts. I came in at 4 and finally converted a good start for the first time this season. The outfield was like lightning and the helped by feeding me short balls to cut and pull. I was eventually out caught in the last over for 97. Only the second innings with my new B3!  :D We finished 246-6 off 40 and looked well on the way to a win after reducing Braunton to 16-2. Unfortunately their no.4 was way too good for our village standard. We missed an easy stumping off him when in the 40's but could do little to stop his onslaught otherwise. He reached 100 of just 40 balls, including 30 off one over from one of our best bowlers. He was eventually out caught for 121 off 49 balls and the damage was done. They coasted home with 12 overs to spare as our bowlers flagged. Overall it was a fantastic tour and the boys are eager to go again next season.

Yet another irritating Saturday. I opened as usual and hit 77 off 100, caught at mid off very very low down after mis timing a pull shot off a pie chucker. Was the opening bowler but was dispatched due to him being about 15 mph below par as he came up from their 2nds, in his second spell was bowling what i can only describe as net bowling off spin which is every opening batsmans weakness and had me out when the ton was almost guaranteed.

We finished 286 for 9 off our 53 overs on a deck that started by seaming sideways but had turned into the MCG. We had them 130-9 and they blocked out for the draw, same as last week. Took 2-16 off 8 which wasnt bad either but needed 3/4 for us to win the game and didnt bowl that well.

I'm very much looking forward to the 50-50 stuff coming back seeing as we struggle to take 10 wickets and have scored 500 more runs than anyone else this season.

Isle of Wight away day tomorrow!

Getting picked up from my house at 7.45am to catch the 9.00am ferry.
We'll arrive at the ground at roughly 11am for a 1.00pm start!

We're then not due to sail back until 9.00pm. I anticipate I'll get home around 10.30pm.

In short that's just shy of a 15 hour day, including travel, for a local game of cricket...

What better way to spend the day?

Nail it until you get a bird who don't like cricket, it's odds on you will

We had an away day to the island last season to play Ryde. Ended up with one of their players threatening one of our lads who was 65 years old.
