I love the old blue and green GM stickers. Wish they did a rero bat with them on. Great job on the refurb!

That would be awesome, as long as they didn’t make the bat right handed though. Remember those? One edge was rounded, and the other was squared off.

was fine as you could order a left handed one!!! - was the most confused i ever was - 16 and being asked if i wanted my GM autograph plus to be left handed or right handed - wasn't sure what was going on - i thought the bloke at GM was taking the piss  :D :D

Finished work for Christmas? Time for some refurb. This one is a nice Salix belonging to a clubmate who I usually open the batting with, nothing major but some little bits of feathering and damage round the toe. Face is in remarkably good condition considering how hard he hits the ball!

Opened up the feathered side, plenty of glue in there and clamped between some handy offcuts to dry.

Yeah just PVA, open the cracks up as best I can then stuff it down there with a Stanley blade. Best not to overthink it with most repairs in my experience, wood glue does the job. By the time you clamp it up most of the glue gets squeezed out anyway, you only need make sure some gets down there.
Not a fan of square toes but don't really think it makes a huge difference. Go for a flat toe edge with rounded corners on my own bats, best of both worlds.

Toe damage glued up nicely, not exactly the biggest job ever but pleasing to do.



Coat of wax and a nice new scuff, grip tidied up, job done.

This seems a good a thread as any to ask this in, Do you watch the bat repair videos on youtube? Fantail put out quite a lot, in a weird sort of way I find it therapeutic, like ASMR videos but for people with weird cricket bat obsessions.

Yes fantail videos are amazing. They made me realise that it is pretty easy to refurb a bat that is horribly split. Just loads of glue, clamping and sanding...

The thing to remember with things like that though...
Almost all bats can be repaired, if the repair will hold though is a separate issue

Does anyone who refurb a fair few bats ever polish them? If so how do you do this? what do you use?  I am wanting to go to the next level....

Polishing compound (Hyfin) and a polishing attachment for my orbital sander. Isn’t quite Salix level but getting there.

I think most of it is getting the last sanding step right. With advice from NorthernMonkey i invested in a Festool RO which prepares the surface perfectly for polishing. I use a compound i cant remember and a SCS polishing wheel. You can get the bats very shiny as you saw from the refurb last week.

I usually put scuff sheets on, so polishing is more or less irrelevant and probably spoils the adhesion
